Rumor: Resident Evil 2 Next-Gen Remake Possible?

The industry is definitely a little remake-happy, but many fans of the old-school titles in question aren't condemning developers. Most remakes are received very well by critics and gamers alike, and considering the sales numbers are also quite acceptable (usually), it's only more incentive for devs to issue remakes.

The latest rumor says that Resident Evil 2 - or perhaps another classic title in Capcom's repertoire - will receive the makeover treatment at some point in the near future. According to SlashGamer, Capcom responded to a hardcore RE2 fan concerning the possibility of a remake. It was during a recent Q&A at the Resident Evil 5 Wondercon panel, and Capcom's Mike Webster responded thusly:

"Stay tuned, we absolutely understand that these are classic games. Some announcements, that you will be very interested in [are on the way]."

Obviously, there's no confirmation in his words, but it means we should definitely be on the lookout for something. They've already remade the original Resident Evil last generation for the GameCube, so perhaps the next logical step would be release a remake of the critically acclaimed RE2 for PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. Some sources will say the sequel remains one of the best - if not the best - survival/horror games of all time, and a next-gen remake could prove to be very popular. Looks like it's another "wait-and-see" situation... We'll keep you posted. If anyone has any suggestions for an old Capcom title they'd like to see remade, feel free to let us know.

I'm playing the Original RE on my original PS1 today and RE2,RE3 will follow this week. What a great trilogy for the PS1, I love these games and would welcome any remake, especially a RE2 remake.

I would love to see a remake of RE2, that was my favorite. Hopefully they'd stay away from the RE4/5 camera. This would be a great reason to return to the classic style, if only for this one time.

Well, not really. I mean, Tekken 6 is not a remake of the older ones. Just because it has a lot of the same characters, moves, and game play mechanics, doesn't mean its the same game. By calling SF4 a remake, you mean that every time a developer makes new characters, newer graphics, new stages, and new moves, then every sequel is pretty much a remake.

I mean those Street Fighter's on ps2 were 3d and had those doll graphics,but sfiv is more like enhanced sega mega drive II/snes street fighter II.That's what everybody keeps saying,that they went back to the classic ways.
SFIV is GREAT! Am looking forward to getting it.

The RE remake on the Gamecube is sweet! I would love to see a RE2 on the PS3. RE2 is one of the best games ever! Capcom sold a copy already if they decide to do a remake. Then again, I've bought every game and movie that has the words Resident Evil on the cover.

RE outbreak file 2 had walk n gun but nobody liked it,if its in the style of RE4 & 5 then the SLOW zombies would never get near enough to hurt you,if its in the style of RE2 then the FPS heads won't play it.

i want the name,city & characters to be the only things the same as the original because you can finish leon a or b in under 2hrs 20mins and that won't fly with me nowadays.
I'd like to explore alot more of the city,ie the parks,schools & skyscrapers ect,sure keep the locations in the original eg.police station,sewers & underground labs but give us alot more.
They could spilt up the city between leon & claire so you get two games in one again.

Ps.if its mutiplat(which it will be),it better get a two disc release on the 360

I don't mind remakes, but if your going to just give us the same game with upscaled graphics then I won't waste my hard earned money on a game I still own and can play in its original form.. To me if your going to bring it up todays standards then do it all the way same charectors but really change the enviorment to reflect todays abilities. make it a sandbox to play in...

Yeah, thats my problem with remakes too. Which is why FF VII will never be remade. Most people want newer things in our remakes, and some dont want any kind of change. I think that would be why Square is afraid to do it.

Well your "friend" does the double I to be annoying and upon requests to stop doing it he decided to flood the forum with half a dozen posts laced with profanity and personal attacks. Not to mention barely any of his posts have any form of coherent thought within them.

If they remake RE2 I would like to see what someone else mentioned earlier, more freedom. The streets were always blocked by cars in the original.

Freedom is over-rated in games. I like my games to be fairly linear ( obviously with some exceptions). I prefer 2D Mario to 3D. I like uncharted more than Tomb Raider. More freedom = more time spent doing nothing.

Actually they had more than 2 playable characters if you count the sub characters you could control for brief instances (Rebecca Chambers in RE1,Ada in RE2).
