PSXE Poll Update: Killzone 2 Met The Hype, Tops In The FPS World

Well, the response has been clear: our readers believe that Killzone 2 did indeed live up to the hype, and is now the greatest FPS ever made.

We have difficulty contending the point, as we can't help but agree. Perhaps the "best FPS ever made" part is more subjective at this point - maybe revolutionary titles like Wolfenstein hold a different sort of value in the annals of video game history - but we certainly believe it's the top FPS of the generation. I played both Halo 3 and Resistance 2 through to completion, and while I loved both, KZ2 is simply another step in a new and exciting direction. Every step is intense, the action feels more real and authentic than it does in any other FPS I've ever played, and there's no doubt that it's a significant challenge. Even though 2009 is loaded with potential gems, we're certain Killzone 2 will earn a spot in our coveted Game of the Year nominations when the year is finally over.

Now, we switch things up a bit. It's an extraordinarily subjective question and we only have places for 10 titles, so we're bound to leave out a few favorites. But you may have to think about the answer: what game has the best storyline ever? What might it be? Perhaps one can argue that almost all the main Final Fantasy and Metal Gear Solid entries should be included, but as we can't do that, we're only picking what we consider to be the best. Granted, you may disagree, but if so, simply choose your favorite on the existing list. And for the record, we really hope to see the continuing trend of better and better plots in the video game realm...people like Kojima need to keep their creative juices flowing!

Kz2 story is ok, but the actions is intense it makes up for the story, it kept me on the edge of the sit, OMG salamun bridge is crazy I lost my mind on that mission. Mgs4 story is awesome.

The game with the best story, I think, is Metal Gear Solid. There were many plot twists, and strong character development, but on top of everything was the revelation that the shot Naomi gave you in the beginning was the virus FoxDie. Once you discovered that, everything that you had done during the game changed. No other video game story has messed with my head like Metal Gear Solid for the PSX.

I'm sorry but its a definet tie between MGS, MGS4, and FFVII, but in the end I would really have to go with MGS, I've played through them all and I really love wat kojima did w/ the mgs series, in my eyes, mgs wins hands down

I absolutely love the KZ2 story, Ive played it a couple of times a is fresh each time I play it, as for the best story well I've never played none of the final fantasy's or MGS so I don't no.

I will not say you're not a gamer or anything silly like that, but it IS a shame you've missed out on those great games. Go back and pick some up. They can be had for cheap (well, except FF7...)
There's that MGS collection for $30 that has the first 3, and the 4th one is slowly dropping in price, and it's fantastic.
And several of the old Final Fantasies have been remade several times, so I'm sure you can pick up a couple for dirt cheap and catch up on some classics!

KZ2's defintiely a great game (I'm only halfway through, been pressed for time these days), but it's definitely not perfect. While I had no issues with the voice acting like a lot of others, I was bummed by strange graphical missteps like the Heavy Trooper's chain guns, which were animated really badly (or rather were not animated), lack of lipsync in the real-time cutscenes, and low-res textures here and there. Of course, the very fact that I'm having to hunt for graphical issues just underscores the fact that KZ2 is a visual and gameplay powerhouse. I'm planning to complete the campaign once and then go back to get the helghast symbols and intel for the trophies.

I got KZ2 last week it's easily on the best games so far this year but it isn't on of the best FPS's ever not when it has Halo 1, Halo 2, Halo 3, Bioshock, and COD4MW to go up against. And for best storyline it is easily FFVII with the MGS series if you missed one game it is impossible to understand the storyline.

I have not played Killzone 2 multiplayer yet, but the campaign mode is far better than any of the Halo games. I mean it is on another level. I couldn't even play through the entire Halo campaigns. The AI is mildy retarded. It just never grabbed me and brought me into the plot or game as K2 has done.

But this is strictly opinion and we each have our own :)

The more i play the game the harder it is for me to understand how this didnt get a 10 in the gfx department. I dont think the game deserves a 10 total because the voice acting was mediocre and the story could have used a little work, but the visuals are un-freaking-believable.

Idk if i told this story before, but i will again just in case. I was playing in the desert level place (forget what its called) and met a guy as i was going up the steps. I fired off a quick shot with my bolt gun and the bolt caught the tail of his jacket and pinned him to the wall, kicking and screaming, until it blew up. THE TAIL OF HIS JACKET! I died 3 seconds later because i was dumbstruck and amazed that they actually rendered his coat tail and made it integral to the gameplay.

The volumetric effects are great for a console too. Often games just use pre-rendered sprites for explosions, but KZ2 actually creates smoke that interacts with the environment.

One more little bit that amazed me:
Go to Visari's palace where you fight Radec's troops and look at the door to Visari's office. See the gas lamps? Shoot their stands, gas tanks are in them. If you hit the right ones they will catch the tapestries on fire and you can watch the flames climb up the fabric, slowly devouring it pixel by pixel.

KZ2 really is the new Half Life, imo. I believe KZ2 will be used as a benchmark for console shooters for this generation.

you hit it right on its amazing to me as well, and i know alot of people hated the voice acting and dialogue but i find it ammusing not brilliant but not rediculous either! on another note it is my fav. FPS the MP is awesome and i cant tell you how great it is too have a game actually support clans to a great extent unlike COD where i can have a clan tag and thats it!
Btw got my VALOR CITATION trophy today (top 1% in KZ2) aww i can smell the platinum trophy now!!!!
As for best story i gotta say mgs series, prob. MGS4, i really like GoW series also.

KZ2 is the best, most authentic FPS I've ever played. S'all I know. It ain't perfect, but that gritty realism that I don't even feel in COD is there, that unpredictable AI that's constantly pulling tricks on me that Halo titles attempt and fail at is there, and I'm just gonna sit on this one until the next groundbreaker because I can't see anything matching it soon.

shin don't judge the game on the demo, the demo was alright but I was like this isn't what it was hyped up to be. But then, I played the game and there it was!! You'll know what I mean when you play it, if you must I suggest atleast renting it and giving the full game a chance.

@WorldEndsWithMe I agree with u. In my opinion COD4 lack horse compare to Kz2, COD4 actions never make me feel like Im at the war but Kz2 does excellent with that. Now Sony will separate "True Next Gen Experience" from last gen. Congrats gg on hard work. Lets see what COD4 MW2 has to offer Im looking for the next best thing.

I'm still waiting for it be available to rent. I was pumped to buy it the day it released until I saw it didn't have split screen multiplayer. Splitscreen is a must for me because I prefer to play with my friends in the same room and none of my friends have a ps3 to play online anyway.

To me videogames are for having fun with your friends.

I think the graphics were amazing (especially for a console) but other than that I didn't think there was anything that would even put it in the same sentence as a HalfLife or HalfLife2. I think the storyline was weak and I didn't care for the controls. I believe a better statement would be "KZ2 is one of the best console FPS ever", I will admit to that.

How was Half-life 2 on the PC? I'm not trying to pick a fight here, but when I played Orange Box on the PS3, I thought Half life 2 kinda...well sucked. I didn't even play through it all. I tried to like it because everyone has always been so excited by the game, but I just didn't like it. I think part of the problem is though that by the time they ported it to the console, there were other games that were out already that had far better gameplay. But that could just be my own personal speculation....

I wish ICO and SOTC combined storyline was up for a vote. I know there is very little dialogue and a lot of user interpretation within both games stories but combined they make for such an amazing thought. I could lose myself for hours just thinking of the world of ICO/SOTC. The ending to SOTC is unmatched by any game and most movies IMO.

I agree with vertigo about the SotC and ICO in that list, but I had to vote for FFVII. That's the last game besides SotC that I really really got into the story, and it was just so good and imersive that I loved it.

As for KZ2, I really really love it, and I can't stop playing it online, which is something for me cause I never play online. Amazing game.

OMG KZ2 SP campaign is so intense! I can NOT play it more than two hours straight. Best FPS EVAR!!!! :D Playing it on Hard, going through a watch-me-die fest, but I LOVE this game I dont want it to finish. KZ2 is the way a FPS should be played. WAR.PERFECTED. Maybe GG can do a rehash of KZ1 like Starbreeze is doing with Butcher Bay. Only wishful thinking ;)

MGS story is awesome tough a bit convoluted. Havent completed any FF game so Idk.

i knew kz2 was a classic when my 2 room mates (both xbox owners) gave it a test drive the other night, and picked the thing apart and made it seem like it was the worst game ever made. some gripes i remember:

- the pixelation on a shadow in a cutscene
- rico says "take out those rpgs" too many times in level 1.
- the textures dont look imaginitive enough.

and on and on.

xbox owners are officially jealous.

I think KZ2, is the best FPS, period, the game is stunning, amazing, and really puts you deep in the whole context of the game, Guerilla have really outdone themselves! IMO! If i have to pick out of those two, I would say the Mgs Series, but i think the God of War series has been amazing, and Gow III will complete the trilogy!

This game just hooks you in . The day I got K2 , I had plans with some friends . So I thought I'll play it for like 15 minutes before leaving , just to get the feel of the game . Next thing I know , my friend was screaming over the phone , because they had been wating for more than 2 hours .

K2 to me is the best FPS to date, no questions asked! However, I am really hoping CoD6 pulls something out of their arse, learns from K2, and builds upon it. I don't want a CoD4-2 or anything. I want to be blown away, and the same goes for Halo3Recon, however, I'm not so sure about that one, since it's only supposed to be a 3 hour game or whatever lol.

One story line that I know I won't see on here that I loved are the ones from the Ace Combat Series. Especially Shattered Skies, Unsung War and Belkan War.

I didn't play fires of liberation for the Xbox so I can't judge on that one.

But the story of the pilots out of that game always sucked me in. I know that it's not on the list, but it's on mine, anyone else feel the same?

i think all the hype made people like the game even before it was out and they didn't change their mind when they got the game. I think the game is really good, the online is not as good as COD4 and the story mode is not as good as other games i've played. KZ2 is quite slow, the online mode drags on and they are a few annoying things about it. Its a good game but its not as jaw dropping as everyone made it out to be. PS the special edition case sucks and is a waste of the extra £3 your going to pay for it at Shopto.com, aluminium? yeah right. :-(

KZ2 is very well done, but no where near perfect. For that, MGS4 has no equal.

I have a few gripes about KZ2 and frankly didn't vote for it as living up to the hype, but don't get me wrong it is still one of the best fps games ever made.

Sorry to admit it but I've never heard of Black Isle studio's either, but that's probably since RPG's aren't really my thing & why Planescape flew under my radar.

BTW, has Black Isle done anything else besides RPG's that I might wanna start hunting around for??

Nope. They were one of, if not the best, RPG makers of their time. Baldur's Gate, Icewind Dale, Fallout, and Lionheart were the only franchises they made before being shutdown in '03. Huge loss for the RPG genre :(
