Sony Amps Up Advertising Campaign?

We've been saying it for a loooong time, haven't we, fellow PSXEers? Haven't we consistently asked Sony to kick up their marketing efforts concerning the PlayStation 3 and exclusive titles? Haven't we all agreed that - along with a price drop - is the last major hurdle facing Sony in this generation? Well...perhaps they heard us.

Has anyone noticed that Sony ads have started to become more frequent, and more importantly, placed in ideal time slots? A posting at N4G turned our attention to GamingFront.net, and as we read the article, the last week kinda came flooding back to us. As noted in that update, Sony has evidently ratcheted things up a notch and produced commercials for the PS3, Killzone 2, and the freshly released MLB 09: The Show (hyped as being "the most realistic baseball game ever," and we might actually have to agree). Best of all, these ads seem to be popping up during primetime television hours, and for the first time in weeks, we see that The Show actually has equal or greater promotion than the competing MLB 2K9. All of this means Sony may have finally cleared the aforementioned hurdle, and although we still think they could've done a much better job with Killzone 2, we can look towards a bright future...loaded with Sony/PS3 advertisements. Our only question is, has anyone noticed something similar, or is this merely a case of a few people accidentally noticing a few ads at opportune moments?

Well, either way, our seemingly age-old plea holds: if Sony would simply advertise their products more, they'd be in a better position. In the gaming public's eyes, it's an absolute necessity.

I just notice a lot of the same KZ2 ad.If they made a new one with game play and the main theme I might actually buy another copy.

Haven't seen a PS3 ad at my house for more than a year, but I did see a Motorstorm: Pacific Rift ad here.

No offense to sports nuts, but I'd prefer it if they'd put that money elsewhere. Sports games don't need the kind of attention/hype that the others do to succeed. I've seen the KZ2 commercial a couple times and the MLB commerical about 30 times, doesn't that seem off to anyone as far as priorities go?

what channels are you watching? I agree that KZ2 needed more advertising, and not only that but DIFFERENT ads, like actual gameplay and focus on the features that it has over other FPS. As for sports games like The SHOW need advertising to differentiate it from 2K9 or other similar games. KZ2 needs to do the same.

Madden doesn't need to advertise at all since they have no competition. sad but true. I'm bitter if you can't tell.

While I agree that established sport games probably do not need as much advertising to succeed, I can also see how putting a KZ2 commercial in prime time on network TV could be a sticky wicket for Sony.

I've only seen the KZ2 commercial once on G4, but the game is so graphically realistic, I can imagine the uproar from some of the masses if in game footage was shown during a break in Americal Idol or similar show where young'uns might be watching (not to mention the whole outlook on war in this country right now for some). I don't want to debate about appropriate ages or ratings for the game itself, or whether violence in video games affects kids, but I think we could all agree that showing in-game footage to an audience that might include young kids is going to cause an uproar with some and could have a negative impact on Sony/PS3.

I whole-heartedly agree that Sony needs to ramp up marketing. The problem with KZ2 is that it is so realistic, it's hard to imaging showing any in-game footage except on adult-oriented shows or later at night.

I still haven't seen any proper KZ2 commercials, but I have seen a few shows that were brought to me by KZ2 lol what the hell is that? It was like 11pm and i was watching South Park I think, or Robot Chicken? Idk ...something weird, and suddenly the show was being brought to me by KZ2, interesting. Better than nothing I guess, but still no full commercial :P

hmm... may there be a link to sony's initial losses caused by the ps3's high price of production to their ad team? not enough $$$ to go around in the entire company to sucessfully advertise any of their products?? hence seldom commercials and cheap "brought to you by" picture adverts... just a thought, not sure if it makes sence..

They really need more advertising... I don't ever see any of them!

I haven't ever seen a KZ2 commercial on TV yet.

There is no real spike. While there is a commercial for The Show, it's not like it plays all the time, there just had to be a commercial for it.

I did see a newer version of the KZ2 commercial though, all they did was add review quotes, which makes it more effective. I see it as much as the old one though.

Hopefully they can make a new one with actual gameplay footage.

Sony miscommunicating again, nobody at home is going to know that the "bullet" commercial was done with the game engine, they will think it was just a CG thing.

I've seen a lot of commercials for The Show, but it is baseball season. What better time to promote a baseball video game than during a game. Makes sense to me:)

I'm a huge MLB fan and I gotta tell you I'm so psyched to see SCEA presenting this game so nicely.

This is actually the one ps3 game which I can remember seeing so many times every day!

Aye aye! I see a new era from SCEA.

They just need to make their commercials more 'bout the game. Less 'bout the console.

You see this MLB commercial, it's perfect. All 'bout the game, and a CLEVER line saying "ps3 gamers demand perfection."

See now THAT'S smart stuff there!

Go SCEA!

When I'm home, my TV on at all the time while I'm awake.

I'm one of those "couch potato insomiac's", and I'll tell you something, I've only seen the KZ bullet commercial & the MLB "About to pitch/swing" commercial 3 times on both major, Philadelphia, & New York TV stations.

Oh, and 2 other extremely stupid one's done for the PS3 itself, with a crazy chopped-up montage of someone's shadow on the side of a bus. It was so bad that I kept cursing out my TV screen.

The only one place I ever see the commercials running a 1/2 decent amount of times, is late night on the "ADULT SWIM" channel, where NO regular mainstream sheep are ever going to see them.

I'm optimistic about Sony ramping up their support for the PS3 but I honestly believe almost 3 years in, Sony stumbled out of the gate on the PS3.

Everything they done right with the PS1 and PS2, they botched with the PS3. Hopefully they'll get it right this year !

Lower the price to $299 and bring back Backwards Compatible and that would be a start in the right direction.

There are a huge number of current PS2 owners who have held off on buying a PS3 because of all the confusion about which PS3 will or won't play PS2 games.

I luckily bought the original 60GB launch model and I enjoy some of my PS2 games as well as my PS3 games. I even had an offer of $600 dollars for my system because of its BC !

I know I've seen more adds for KZ2 then I ever saw for Resistance 2 so that's got to be a plus.

But is TV advertising still working? I read somewhere that some companies are requesting to make adds longer because everyone is recording shows now on PVR's and skipping the commercials anyways.

As for me, I've got Basic Cable and I hardly watch it. I watch TV from 6:30 to 7:30 after I've walked the dog and I'm making/eating dinner.

After that, off goes the cable and on comes the PS3 for a movie or a bit of gaming. So I don't really see a lot of commercials anyways. So even if Sony ramps up the advertising is it worth it to do it on TV? Shouldn't they focus more instead on Captive Audience media like Movie theaters where people can't walk away, change the channel or fast forward.

On the other hand, advertising seems to work for MS so who knows?

I was drowning in resistance 2 ads for months on the channels I watch. It seemed every commercial break had R2 adds through January and February.

Sony is up to something. I have noticed a lot of deals on the 80 GIG. Today Fry's has a deal where you buy the 80 GIG and get a free extra DS3 controller and Dark Knight on Blu-Ray for $399. I think Sony is going to phase out the 80 GIG and make the 160 GIG the core system.

about time. I think it would be great if it was low budget, with a black, blue XMB background as they interviewed customers about their PS3 experience ( kinda like the "I'm a PC" ads). It make the advertisement seem average people oriented, and could be a sweet success. Imagine:
"My name is Matt, and I love my Playstation 3".

160gb as the core system could work well at $400 with backward compatability because it would match the 360 elite price point with a bigger hard drive. Before for somereason people said they thought they should make one with no hard drive like the xbox but that wouldn't play basicly any games, atleast not the ones i got, i think even guitar hero needed a update

I actually saw an ad for KZ2 on the History Channel yesterday while I was flipping through channels (no joke). It was prime time too.

But that's about it. I see more Halo Wars commercials than I do any kind of PS3 commercials.

I have only seen 2 KZ2 tv adds so far. Today during the European champions league football match between Man U and Inter Milan, I have seen 2 Resident Evil 5 tv adds for the 360. My brother asked me if the game was out on PS3 or does he have to buy a 360. Come on Sony, let the veiwers know that these games are on the PS3 too.

There have been plenty of GTA IV DC tv adds for the 360. My brother asked me if he had to get a 360 to play GTA IV not knowing that the game is also on PS3.

The lack of BC pisses me off as well as Sony's continued change in the SKU. Seriously there have been like 7 different PS3s to buy since it came out. The lack of BC is a big deal becuase Sony originally promised it and used it as a selling point only to later backtrack. I have a huge PS2 collection and since my PS2 died in October I've been hoping Sony would continue to support what I consider the best software era in gaming with their new technology. It would be one thing if Sony kept ADDING new things with each new SKU they release but they just keep taking away features.
