Sony Amps Up Advertising Campaign?
We've been saying it for a loooong time, haven't we, fellow PSXEers? Haven't we consistently asked Sony to kick up their marketing efforts concerning the PlayStation 3 and exclusive titles? Haven't we all agreed that - along with a price drop - is the last major hurdle facing Sony in this generation? Well...perhaps they heard us.
Has anyone noticed that Sony ads have started to become more frequent, and more importantly, placed in ideal time slots? A posting at N4G turned our attention to GamingFront.net, and as we read the article, the last week kinda came flooding back to us. As noted in that update, Sony has evidently ratcheted things up a notch and produced commercials for the PS3, Killzone 2, and the freshly released MLB 09: The Show (hyped as being "the most realistic baseball game ever," and we might actually have to agree). Best of all, these ads seem to be popping up during primetime television hours, and for the first time in weeks, we see that The Show actually has equal or greater promotion than the competing MLB 2K9. All of this means Sony may have finally cleared the aforementioned hurdle, and although we still think they could've done a much better job with Killzone 2, we can look towards a bright future...loaded with Sony/PS3 advertisements. Our only question is, has anyone noticed something similar, or is this merely a case of a few people accidentally noticing a few ads at opportune moments?
Well, either way, our seemingly age-old plea holds: if Sony would simply advertise their products more, they'd be in a better position. In the gaming public's eyes, it's an absolute necessity.

Madden doesn't need to advertise at all since they have no competition. sad but true. I'm bitter if you can't tell.

I've only seen the KZ2 commercial once on G4, but the game is so graphically realistic, I can imagine the uproar from some of the masses if in game footage was shown during a break in Americal Idol or similar show where young'uns might be watching (not to mention the whole outlook on war in this country right now for some). I don't want to debate about appropriate ages or ratings for the game itself, or whether violence in video games affects kids, but I think we could all agree that showing in-game footage to an audience that might include young kids is going to cause an uproar with some and could have a negative impact on Sony/PS3.
I whole-heartedly agree that Sony needs to ramp up marketing. The problem with KZ2 is that it is so realistic, it's hard to imaging showing any in-game footage except on adult-oriented shows or later at night.

I did see a newer version of the KZ2 commercial though, all they did was add review quotes, which makes it more effective. I see it as much as the old one though.
Hopefully they can make a new one with actual gameplay footage.

This is actually the one ps3 game which I can remember seeing so many times every day!
Aye aye! I see a new era from SCEA.
They just need to make their commercials more 'bout the game. Less 'bout the console.
You see this MLB commercial, it's perfect. All 'bout the game, and a CLEVER line saying "ps3 gamers demand perfection."
See now THAT'S smart stuff there!
Go SCEA!

I'm one of those "couch potato insomiac's", and I'll tell you something, I've only seen the KZ bullet commercial & the MLB "About to pitch/swing" commercial 3 times on both major, Philadelphia, & New York TV stations.
Oh, and 2 other extremely stupid one's done for the PS3 itself, with a crazy chopped-up montage of someone's shadow on the side of a bus. It was so bad that I kept cursing out my TV screen.
The only one place I ever see the commercials running a 1/2 decent amount of times, is late night on the "ADULT SWIM" channel, where NO regular mainstream sheep are ever going to see them.

Everything they done right with the PS1 and PS2, they botched with the PS3. Hopefully they'll get it right this year !
Lower the price to $299 and bring back Backwards Compatible and that would be a start in the right direction.
There are a huge number of current PS2 owners who have held off on buying a PS3 because of all the confusion about which PS3 will or won't play PS2 games.
I luckily bought the original 60GB launch model and I enjoy some of my PS2 games as well as my PS3 games. I even had an offer of $600 dollars for my system because of its BC !

But is TV advertising still working? I read somewhere that some companies are requesting to make adds longer because everyone is recording shows now on PVR's and skipping the commercials anyways.
As for me, I've got Basic Cable and I hardly watch it. I watch TV from 6:30 to 7:30 after I've walked the dog and I'm making/eating dinner.
After that, off goes the cable and on comes the PS3 for a movie or a bit of gaming. So I don't really see a lot of commercials anyways. So even if Sony ramps up the advertising is it worth it to do it on TV? Shouldn't they focus more instead on Captive Audience media like Movie theaters where people can't walk away, change the channel or fast forward.
On the other hand, advertising seems to work for MS so who knows?

There have been plenty of GTA IV DC tv adds for the 360. My brother asked me if he had to get a 360 to play GTA IV not knowing that the game is also on PS3.
