Sony: Blu-Ray, Free Network Are PlayStation 3 Mainstays

With everyone hoping for a PlayStation 3 price cut, we've seen many different rumors crop up around the Internet. One of the most recent was when Janco's Mike Hickey predicted Sony would issue a Blu-Ray-less PS3 that would be cheaper than the current model.

Of course, this made little sense to many people (including us) who simply replied, "...wait, aren't all the games on Blu-Ray?" Yes, yes they are, and according to what Sony marketing manager Kim Nguyen told Silicon Alley Insider, Blu-Ray isn't going anywhere. "That would pretty much destroy the PS3's backbone," he said, and then added: "Our games were built on Blu-Ray. Blu-Ray will always be part of the PS3." So that's that; we call it logic. Then there has been the question of the free PlayStation Network, as many journalists have postulated that with the increase in content and functionality, Sony will decide to start charging a fee, like Microsoft does with Xbox Live. But that isn't happening, either. Said Sony's Susan Panico: "Online gaming is like a First Amendment right." That's what we like to hear, and we all continue to enjoy the fact that it costs us nothing to leap into an online multiplayer match or download the latest and greatest demo.  Free is good.

Therefore, anything you may have heard in the recent past concerning a PS3 without Blu-Ray, or the idea that Sony will start charging for the Network...you can ignore it all. We still want that price cut, of course, but that will come in due time; we're still anticipating a drop some time later this year.

well i never believed the BD-less PS3 thing.

as far as the Free Online Gaming. thank you Sony. i mean im sure DC Online is gonna have a monthly fee (which i wont mind), but i dont need to have a fee just to play the game online, and end up paying another fee.

Example: xbox live membership and then also paying to play FFXI online.

Free online and BD are the two things that made me choose the PS3 over the 360. Also, the PS3 is future proof.

Cool free, not start putting more stuff on the PSN in terms of games. PS2, PS1, PSP.

Good news. I like the idea that it doesn't matter if I online game 24/7 or once per year, it's free

Same here, BR and the free PSN made it easy to choose the PS3. Not mention the hardware grunt in itself! Classy stuff!

That's good news to hear that psn will remain free. II still don't mind paying for xblv though II only renew it when a new game comes out for 360. Speaking of blu ray II gotta pick up role model almost forgot it came out this week.

I really do not see why 360 fans still try to defend paying an anual fee to play games online. It must be like trying to defend diabeties, trying to make every one jealous that they don't have it and because you do you're better than them.

well we all knew that sony wasnt goin to change anything n if u did shame on u sony has been good with all it offered on the ps3....besides i think if they started chargin for online the way the 360 does less people would buy it because i know plenty of people who chose the ps3 over the 360 because of the free online before they started taking a likein to the system as a whole because even 360 fanboys must admit that the ps3 is great same way i as a ps3 fanboy admit that many xbox live features are pretty cool

p.s we all knew that bd less ps3 was as good as the dam blade series was lol y would sony do that that is just a whole buncch of doodoo god dam jibba jabba shmigan smash :)

I, for one, believe there will eventually be a BD-less PS3. I also believe they'll release one that doesn't have a power switch.

For now, but there was also probably a time when you watched VHS more than DVD...

Even though it's a slowly dying format, we aren't going to see it dissapear completely for a while yet. I'd be willing to bet that we'll see at least one more Playstation with a disc drive before they start dropping them off completely. Why would Sony drop Blu-ray now? It's just getting started.

We are going to see more and more options though to have games downloaded as HDD's get bigger and cheaper, but Discs won't dissapear too soon.

True, but, if you are old enough you probably remember watching VHS tapes more than DvD's.

@ photo k...

you do have a sony brand controller with a "home" button paired to your ps3 right??? thats yer lazy alternative to getting up 2 turn it on until that VRS(voice recognition system) stuff comes out...

Holographic disks will replace bluray, wikipedia the disk.. 1TB storage space... thats like 20 brd's... dvd is a dying video storage device, thats y its going to completely take over the CD in terms of audio storage... say hello to dvd's son, DAD (DIGITAL AUDIO DISK)

Free online makes a lot of sense. You buy a PC, and you pay your ISP to go online. You buy a PS3, and you pay your ISP to go online. It's the content providers who compete to get your business, and in an open market, competition is good.

the system itself isnt that expensive anymore, when compared to what you get out of the box as opposed to other systems.
a blu ray player and built in wifi are at the top of the list, along with region free gameplay.
no need to mod anything, and ruin warranties.

Wouldn't it be epic if there actually was such a thing as a commercial FOR the PS3 system, and on they mentioned that the network was totally free always and forever?

360-only boys who say they don't mind paying for xlive have got to at least consider that if they got it at launch, that's $150 extra bones on that "cheaper" system already. If Sony charged I'd be upset, free online is a goddamned first amendment right for gamers, otherwise you basically buy a bunch of gimped games.

i also think that if sony were to advertise the great specifics of its system more people would buy it....i personally dont think it is only the money involved that sways a person to buyin a system because wen my girl was a superviser in circuit city i used to pass by to play rock band wit sum friends and me and her managed to convince plenty of people to buy the ps3 instead of the 360 ( its kinda mean towards ms but i enjoy seein people leave a store knowin they got the best (too bad cc closed down it was a great store)

I was worried they would try to drop the Blu-ray movie fuction kind of like what M$ did with the first XBOX it used a dvd format for the games but they made you pay extra to unlock the movie feature. When I first heard a rumor that Sony would drop the BD thats what I assumed they were planning.
