RE5 Versus Mode Available, Capcom Defends Its Position
Resident Evil 5 is receiving mixed reviews, although they're mostly positive. The current debate centers on whether or not Capcom should've included a competitive multiplayer mode, a mode they're currently charging for as additional DLC.
These days, competitive multiplayer seems like standard fare for almost every major release, and while RE5 holds a cooperative, partner-based style of gameplay at its core, we didn't get a competitive option. Well, it's available now on the PlayStation Network and Xbox Live Marketplace; it's priced at $4.99 on the former and goes for 400 Microsoft Points on the latter. It's called Versus mode, and it lets four players compete in a couple of different competitive game modes. Survivor's Rule is similar to Deathmatch (you can go 1-on-1 or 2-on-2), and Slayer's Rule is a point battle; the more Majinis you take down, the more points you receive. Now, Capcom has this to say about this $5 add-on, according to CVG:
"Although Versus mode makes use of the assets that exist in the game, the functionality is not currently in the game and is above and beyond the initial scope of Resident Evil 5."
So, do you agree? Or should Capcom have included Versus in the retail copy of the game? This is one publisher that typically looks after their fans, so it can be difficult to blame Capcom for this type of transgression. But we imagine some multiplayer aficionados are a little peeved, even if we're only talking about five bucks...

Anyweiz. i dont even touch the versus mode/online play if i enjoyed the storyline in single player/story mode. Some games are meant for just campaign modes and some games are meant for online play. RE5, IMO, is just meant for campaing mode, not for competitive play online.

And speaking of online, developers.....stop putting in ridiculous trophies that can only be had by playing hundreds of hours of online.
10002 kills on multi-player(Battlefield Bad Co.), be in top 1% (Killzone) win a crap load of races (Motorstorm and Midnight Club) to name a few.

Any video game company has to realize that people will pay for things. We always have, and always will. For example, here are a few questions for anyone reading that will prove my point.
- How many millions of people pay for Live?
- How easy did the transition from $49.99 to $59.99 on retail titles go?
- How many people buy DLC, no matter how insignificant?
- How many people purchase clothes on PS Home?
- How short have singleplayer games become over the past decade?
Charging for features such as multiplayer is a natural evolution of gaming. And just like my examples above, the gaming population as a whole will do exactly what the corperate study groups predict..
..spend the money.

And no, it's not 5 dollars. It's 65 dollars by the time you get to play versus. That's a huge mistake on Capcom's part. Huge. It's not like there's been some public outcry for versus mode and they decided to add it on for the fans. IT'S ONLY BEEN 3 DAYS!
