Rumor: New PS3 Bundle Hitting Target Stores Next Week?
After yesterday's rumor concerning a possible PS3 price cut, everyone was on high alert for news like this. However, we still say the two pieces of news are unrelated; the previous rumor likely won't be confirmed, and this isn't a price cut. It's a new PS3 bundle.
According to a Joystiq reader tip, Target stores have already received a new PS3 SKU number. Apparently, it denotes the new bundle package that you see pictured here, which will become available on March 29. It includes an 80GB PS3 console and two Greatest Hits titles; Resistance: Fall of Man and MotorStorm. Now, this is pretty similar to the bundle that released in Europe back in 2007, and it may seem somewhat...out of date. But it could be great for those who have yet to leap aboard the PS3 bandwagon, as you're essentially getting the two games for free. This bundle should retail for $399, which is of course the exact price of the 80GB PS3. This still isn't a price drop, but if the rumor turns out to be true, a lot of people may be swayed by those two free titles. They may be a few years old, but they're still well worth playing, and great starting points for those who are a little late to the party. Is this what the EB employee was talking about? Eh, seems unlikely.
He specifically mentioned a "price cut," and that doesn't describe this new bundle package. We'll wait for official confirmation on both pieces of news, but we figure such a bundle is quite likely. The price drop...? We're still calling foul.

But I do somehow think this coincides with the supposed "price cut" EB was on about. It makes sense if you think about it: PS3 becomes cheaper to make, so Sony drops core systems price, and then releases a new bundle to entice gamers while not losing money by making the bundle.
