PlayStation 3 System-Selling Software: Current And Future

The concept of the "system-selling" title is simple: it's a game that's so good, it manages to convince a previously on-the-fence consumer to finally purchase the piece of hardware necessary for playing the title in question. Obviously, we're talking about exclusives; nobody sits there with the Xbox 360 and says, "oh gee, Grand Theft Auto IV is out...now I need a PS3."

So, here's a look at what Sony's machine already has; what we consider to be system-selling software:

Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots: Really, it's the reason to own the PS3 right now, and it should be more than enough to coerce even the most pessimistic gamers to own the necessary console. It features one of the best storylines we've ever seen in video games, and the streamlined stealth/action gameplay is fantastic. In short, this isn't just a game...it's an experience.

LittleBigPlanet: It's one of the most innovative and entertaining games we've ever seen, and it's also one of the most technically accomplished. It swept the competition away at this year's AIAS Awards and you'll be hard-pressed to find a single solitary soul who doesn't like LBP. And with all the DLC available, plus the fact that it's specifically designed for co-op play, you could literally play it forever.

Uncharted: Drake's Fortune: It was the very first legitimate reason to own a PS3 in our estimation. It was the action/adventure title that really surprised a lot of people, and if you're a fan of the genre, you can't possibly miss out. Beautiful and fun as hell, Nathan Drake captured our interest right from the start, and when it ties with God of War II for our 2007 Game of the Year Award...well, that says something.

Killzone 2: It's simply a step ahead of any other FPS available and if you want the best of the best in this competitive genre, you absolutely need a PS3. Guerilla's masterpiece is a gem from front to back, and although it didn't receive the marketing campaign it deserved from Sony, that doesn't change its amazing inherent quality. It's simply one of those "must-play" titles that helps to define a generation.

Now that we've established these current PS3 system sellers, here's a look at the games that will further push hardware sales:

God of War III: We're just going to say it: GoWIII will be the best action game of the generation to date, and may be the finest action title in history. It's almost inevitable at this point. The first two installments in the series are two of the highest scoring and most popular games ever, and based on what we've seen so far of the third and final entry...wow. Just...wow. Like MGS4, we say it's going to be another memorable experience.

Gran Turismo 5: Remember back in 2001, when everyone was always saying, "oh, I'll buy a PS2 when GT3 comes out"? Yeah, well, GT3 came out and a whole lot of people went out to buy a PS2, and we figure it's bound to happen again when GT5 finally arrives. We've already gotten a taste with Prologue, which proves to us that the final product will absolutely be the finest racing simulator ever. And yeah, you're gonna need the PS3.

Uncharted 2: Among Thieves: Just as the original deserved to be on the "current" list, the sequel most certainly deserves to be on the "future" list. Set for release later this year, Uncharted 2 is the prettiest damn console game we've ever seen, and it's just gonna blow everyone away. Drake is the new Lara Croft, and guess what? ...his games are better. Look out, Gears of War, you're going to have major competition for the best third-person action/shooter available!

The Secret PS3 Exclusive: That's right...it's a secret. We know what it is, and we know it's a true-blue system seller. We know people have been waiting for the announcement...we know it exists...we know the confirmation is coming...but we ain't gonna tell ya 'bout it, because we promised we wouldn't. Just trust us when we say, it deserves to be on this list.

If I didn't have a PS3 those games would be enough for me to shell out the money to grab one. I have each one of the available games and they are indeed must haves.

I'm looking forward to GOW 3 and GT5 so bad. The trailer for GOW3 speaks for itself.

Hehe, I think you made this list just so you could shock us all with that ending.

The obvious possibility to me was the new Team ICO game. Isn't the head of that studio supposed to speak at GDC next week?

Maybe that's just wishful thinking though, because I REALLY want some news about their game.

as people said up there before me, I didn't expect much from this blog post, because i've heard all there is to hear about all these games.... until I got to the ending. Ben is the master of hype eh? geez ...i had no idea something this big was coming. Lately it's just been the same old same old. Heavy Rain this, GOW3 that... I would absolutely love to play a new Twisted Metal. The ps3 has got me playing all kinds of games that I never would have played before... and Twisted Metal would be amazing. But ...if it's something from Team ICO, perhaps another Shadow of the Collosus? hmm ...maybe

Hey all. I would just like to say that I've been a silent observer of this site for a while. I've read at ton of your articles Ben. I've also scoped out the message boards alot. I even watched the whole Joshua fiasco. Until today, I've left maybe about 5 comments total on any site because frankly, most people are idiots. You guys actually seem fairly intelligent. Ben, could this be the title seen last year by some British reporter who said it was the most amazing thing he'd ever seen in his life... but sworn to secrecy about it?
Back then, most people thought it was Heavy Rain, but I think that reporter said it was definitely not Heavy Rain, but couldn't mention the title.

I'm not asking you to disclose the title or anything, but can you tell us if this is the same game you saw?

Well, I would guess that if it WERE a new IP, you'd be able to say so...because it wouldn't really be giving us any further information. Therefore, we now know it ISN'T a new IP.

I'd like to think it's a sequel to Heavenly Sword, but I don't think a whole lot of people would be that excited about that.

I just dont feel like it'll be either of those because it's way too soon to be announcing sequels to either of those. It definitely has to be an existing IP though. If it's a system seller then it has already proven that fact, right?

The way gamers are, this "secret game" has to be a new IP from a highly respected developer or a sequel of some sort. Which tells us nothing. It does have to be an exclusive though.

You know what we need? Legacy of Kain. I'm betting that if they did make another that it wouldn't be exclusive though. Dammit....I just miss Kain and Raziel too freakin much. Advent Rising as well, same case though. Maybe a decent Matrix game for once. Well I'm gonna go find a nice corner to cry in for a while, you guys take care.

I really do think that's what it is.

It's a system seller because it's a beloved series that is already established and very popular (People have been clamoring for new on it forever). Sad to say I kinda hope it isn't though, I never got on board KH like I did with other RPGs.

I do know twisted metal has been announced for the ps3. it was announced in the ps2 game twisted metal head on extremely twisted edition. with that secret code at the end said something like "twisted metal headed to ps3".

nothing has been shown on twisted metal though i did hear that whatever David Jaffe is working on uses the engine from warhawk which i can see being great for twisted metal. so yes i know twisted metal is coming i also know that a lot of people even maybe you ben has said that the ps3 needs a game like twisted metal

Last year Ben interviewed David Jaffe and Scott Campbell and there were bits in italics saying that they talked about a new project but he wasn't allowed to say anything.

The site hasn't said anything about it since and now Ben is teasing us about something he has seen enough of to know it will be a big deal. That and it must be an established series because the name has been mentioned and I don't think anyone would be able to guess the name of a new IP.

So I reckon Twisted Metal is a big chance.

I will never play the game, but I bet The Show will move a few systems. People like baseball, and it is (apparently) by far the best one out there. Sports games can have a lot of power. It's America's past time (I'm a Canadian living in Korea, I really don't care).

As great as MLB: The Show is, there really isn't anything different from last years version. Except that damned baserunning system that causes more problems than it should. But for those that want the best baseball game available, then yeah the PS3 has the bragging rights on that one.

I'd go with a FF7 remake. I think that this would really sell systems. As someone mentioned above, I also agree that a new GTA and MGS game would be too soon. Aside from FF7 though, I would say Kingdom Hearts and Twisted Metal. However, I didn't know though that both these games could be considered as system sellers, not where I'm from anyway.

based on comments above, for Ben to call it a system seller with confidence, it would have to be a well established series on the PS. With that in mind I'm narrowing it down to the MG, TM, KH and FF series (ignoring titles that have officially been announced)

Dissecting these titles:
TM - I don't think it's this one. I'm a huge fan of twisted metal and it has had good sales in the pass.. but to be called a sure system seller (considering it's specific sub-genre, its a bit of a stretch)... saying that, i can't wait to play this baby

FF - we have waited forever for XIII. I'd be knocking on the coffin if i held my breath for a VII remake

MG5 - Possible, but hasn't there been news of this being official? it'd certainly be huge no doubt

I personally think it's KH3. Hugely successful on PS2 and would explode on the PS3 if it was an exclusive

Michael Pachter has already stated before that GTA V will come out next year. So if you really want to get really technical, you can say that that one has been announced as well lol. Which sounds about right anyway since the newest entry in the series tends to come out every two years anyway. Except Vice City and Liberty City Stories.

Those four games are definite system sellers and the first four titles a new PS3 owner should buy but I feel that there's also one real wild card: MLB 09: The Show. The only way you're going to play a great baseball game on a console is to own a PS3. So while everybody else is stuck with the inferior MLB2K game, we get to play one of the best sports games ever.

Guys i had some free time so here i've shortlisted the games on the comments before Ben told us that the secret game been mentioned and it seems we can pinpoint it!! :)

FF7 remake (9.7M sold)
TWISTED METAL (7M sold in this series)
Kingdom hearts 3 (9M sold in this series)
Onimusha (6M sold in series, however one was made for the xbox)
Shadow of Colossus 2 (Ben ruled it out and never got the sales it deserved)
Hitman (Multiplatform so low possibility)
Suikoden VI (brilliant game but never got the sales it deserved)
Earthworm Jim (too old, not well established enough)
Battletoads (too old, not well established enough)
Dark Stalkers (not well established enough)
Breath of Fire (brilliant game but never got the sales it deserved)
Colony Wars (not well established enough)
Bushido Blade (not well established enough)
MGS5 (Don't know what to say!?)
Heavenly Sword 2 (brilliant game but never became a system seller)
Syphon Filter (5m sold in series but system seller?)
Jak & Daxter (yes had sales but again system seller?)
Sly cooper (sly cooper 4 is registered on vgchartz but isn't really a system seller)

The figures were taken from vchartz just for argument sake.
Well then i think we can safely say that it HAS to be FF7 remake, Twisted Metal, KH 3 or Onimusha.
I personally would go for Twisted metal and my second guess is KH3. Ben defended the fact the TM is NOT announced so seems fishy and KH3, well why wouldn't you make a sequel to that? BUT i really don't know if KH3 would be a SYSTEM seller? whereas FF7 would be BIG TIME. so pretty much only 3 games to choose from..

Ben thank you for this news as i'd be excited no matter which of these 3 games came out!!

PC has gotten the first and third Onimusha games and the Xbox got the first. The Game Boy received one. Kingdom Hearts 2 is actually the third in the series since it takes place one year after the Game Boy title. And the DS is getting another one as is the PSP. And cell phones have one of their own as well. So from a technical standpoint, those two series aren't really considered exclusive. Though Kingdom Hearts might push a few consoles. And I just don't see a FFVII remake being made so that rules that one out. So after narrowing it down, it looks like Twisted Metal. According to this list. Would be nice, but we'll just have to wait and see.

that list doesnt impress me... im not a shooter type of guy... or a racer type of guy. Never got into GOW games... i brought little big planet played a few times sold it online. the only game i got now is V Chronicles, and a few PSN titles... =( im just wierd i guess...

I remember when that code from Twisted Metal: Head-On: Extra Twisted Edition was cracked. It was reported all over the Internet (even here), as was Jaffe's confirmation.

So, Ben, while there hasn't been any OFFICIAL press release announcing Twisted Metal PS3, Jaffe did confirm it was coming.

I don't know if that means the game you're referring to is TM PS3 and you're just trying to throw us off the scent or if because TM was confirmed by Jaffe (and it was), the game you are reffering to is different.

However, there is no doubt you are teasing this now because you know it is being announced at GDC.

IMO, I wouldn't say Twisted Metal is a system seller. But that's just me.

I'll go for KH3 for now out of the games people have listed. It would certainly shift a lot of consoles in Japan. If anyone has any new suggestions I'm up for that.

As for MGS5, if Kojima isn't fully behind it, does anyone else have feelings that it'll go multiplat if it ever is released?
