GDC 09: The Last Remnant PS3 Gone?

When we first heard that Square-Enix's The Last Remnant would debut on the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 owners were understandably upset. And although the game didn't turn out to be the fantastic gem everyone had hoped it'd be, PS3 fans are still gonna be miffed if it never arrives.

The Game Life blog attended The Last Remnant panel at the Game Developers Conference, and after discussing the difficulty in using the Unreal Engine 3 in a JRPG, the question was posed: "The Last Remnant was originally announced to be Square-Enix's first multiplatform game. But the PlayStation 3 version hasn't come out yet. Is it still happening?" The response?

Silence.

No one wants to speak. Finally, someone ventures: "Well, the PC version came out this week."

Me: "Yes, it did."

More silence. Everyone's kind of glancing around.

Takai: "Well, as for the PS3 version, I can't say anything about that."

Me: "Alright, then."

Er...why didn't they want to say anything? Has the PS3 version of The Last Remnant disappeared? If they didn't want to confirm a release date, that's one thing, but why couldn't they even answer the question, "is it still happening?" This isn't likely to go over well with PS3 owners, and Square-Enix is already in the doghouse as far as many Sony fans are concerned. Stay tuned for more info.

I honestly have to say, I don't care. I don't care about nearly anything about Squeenix anymore, and I hope they lose tons of money by being idiots and making themselves NEARLY a 360 exclusive thirdy-party developer and published (home console wise anywayz)

Whoa Whoa Whoa Whoa, wolf. Such malice. Why should the guys at S-E that're working hard making FF13 and Versus having to suffer because of some bad corporate direction. Blame the executives and the decision-makers, not the workers and order takers (that just try to make the games you love).

I am with you,I get a headache thinking how SE turn their back on the company that help them get fame and make them a house hold name. And people are fools if they think FFversus is going to remain ps3 exclusive,If anything I'll become a 360 game.

Oh well, some of my friends with the PC version and the Xbox version said the graphics were absolutely amazing, but the gameplay... bleh. I would really like to try it out for myself before passing judgement, but at this rate I wouldn't want to spend full price to get it. (I don't rent.)

No answer would probably mean, "We're evaluating whether or not to finish and release it." Right? If it came out to not-so-good fanfare on the 360, why would they want to spend the money and resources on releasing a sub-par product to even more poor reviews?

Ben I read this literally laughed out loud until a slight tear came to my eye.

I love Square-Enix's antics now. Its was infuriating at 1st, but now its just funny. I starting to think that S-E keeps the PS3 developers locked away in the vault somewhere working FF13 titles 20 hours a day. While the rest of the staff, works 4 hour days and makes 360 games.

That "ish" is so funny to me. Thanks for the laugh. I'm going to bed now.

"Hey S-E what about that PS3 game?"
"Uh...uh...we came out with the PC version."

Pure Comedy.

We don't actually have much of anything to look foreward to Isaya, nothing Square caliber, or even much of RPG-ish in general. I agree with some of these posters in saying that this is really stupid, and does not make a lick of sense to me whatsoever. It's just really pissing me off that they're skipping out on pretty much everything Sony related. It ..just seems so weird to me, personally (although i'm sure others can add to this) I can't think of a single SE game that i've played since ffx or xi. I played xii a few times (bought the collectors edition even, assuming it's greatness) and invested about 30 hours before I realized that I actually could not stand the game, and could not even remember what the story was about at that point. So ...yeah, where the hell have they been? Aaaah that's right, Microsoft bought them out. Okay well, who's pumped for WKC? That's all I can think of off the top of my head.... and I have no idea what to expect from that. *crosses fingers* Hoping for the best

There are more JRPG PS3 games coming than you might think:

Cross (X) Edge (already announced for the U.S. this May)

Tears To Tiara

Atelier Rorona

Agarest Senki Zero, a prequel to Agarest Senki, which came out on the PS3 last year.

We already know about WKC and Demon's Souls.

Gotta agree with King James, this is just comical now. I mean all they had to do to become the laughing stock of the industry was jump ship to 360, now they are just tanking left and right all the while entertaining us with their ridiculous antics. Maybe they should fix the problems on Last Remnant, polish it up, and release it on PS3 for free with a little greeting card included that says "We're sooooooo sorry about our behavior lately." :P

As disappointed as I am with Square lately I can understand their side of it. I imagine the conversation with Microsoft went something like this:

Square: "Let's get this straight. You're going to pay us around 50 million for exclusive rights to games that haven't even got a proven fan base?"

Microsoft: "Correct. We really need to prove this system has staying power before the stockholders take over the company and shut down our division for costing the company over $6 billion with the X-box and 360 line."

Square: "So even if the games don't sell a single copy, we still make 50 million?"

Microsoft: "Correct. The name is all we really want. People will buy the games. But there is one more thing. For this price we also want exclusive rights to Final Fantasy XIII."

Square: "Hahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha. Are you out of your minds? We'll make way more than that on PS3 alone. But tell you what, make it 100 million and we'll port it to your system and toss in Star Ocean as well."

Microsoft: "I have to call this in. 'Bill, they want 100 million for a port of Final Fantasy XIII but they said they'd throw in Star Ocean. What do you think? Uh-huh, okay, sure, got it. What? Starbucks? Sure fine just let me finish up here. Okay...*whisper*Thank you master, you're the greatest*whisper*' Okay, here's your check. Let us know when the games are ready?"

Microsoft Leaves

Square: "I can't believe it. We just made 100 million without selling a single game. Okay, give the first three projects to those new studios and tell them to find engines to build their games on. Call Tri-ace and tell them the budget for Star Ocean needs to be cut. Finally, tell the Final Fantasy team to find a way to make the game work on a 360. Easiest money we ever made."

Square Assistant: "But sir, won't that lower the quality of the games and damage our reputation?"

Square: "How many times have you seen an offer like that come along? Any normal company would never allow a division to throw away money without some guarantee of success or profit return. There isn't much time left before the stockholders take over and cut off this near limitless flow of funds so we need to take advantage of it while we can. Don't worry about our reputation. When the well dries up we can use some of the extra profits to start making better quality games and restore what can only be a minimal loss of the fanbase."

I probably wouldn't pass up on the opportunity either. The only thing I'm thankful for is I'm starting to see the bottom of that well. When R&D budgets get slashed and product and accessory lines are being discontinued to cut down on costs you know things are not going well in the house that Microsoft bought*.

*Not a misuse of a phrase. My biggest complaint with Microsoft has always been that they bought what they are famous for and we all know the rich kid who comes to the game is defeated by talent and a lack of funds in the end.

PS3 fans aren't missing out on much. It is a beautiful game, but with a flawed battle system. The story is your typical modern FF style plot, but badly executed with a poor attempt at captivating a "Western Audience".

SE is known for JRPGs. That's the games we want from SE. They need to stop trying to be something they aren't and give the fans what they want... (cue FFVII remake cries)...

Don't you guys get it? S-E no longer have to worry about sales at all they don't even have to worry about quality for that matter. All the money MS is paying them already guarantees them a profit. So the less time and effort they put into the bigger their profit margin will be in the end. So for them losing PS3 (Loyal SQUARESOFT) supporters they cop out and jump ship...get way more money AND they actually have to work less... makes sense to me.

Like an Artist or rockstar that's just in it for the money and the p***** eventually it all dries up.And when that happens if they weren't real good artist they will never write another hit song again. And they will fade away like so many others before them.

There is also nothing harder that to get back a fan you p***** on.

So Square-Enix you have one more show left in my book and that is FFXIII (even if it is Multiplat) and FFXIII versus. And that better be the best freakin show you have ever played! If not I think even your new boy band following (the xbots) would have had enough and move on to the next ''Jonas Brothers album'' or what not...

(Sorry for all the weird comparisons but it made sense while writing it)
