GDC 09: Mass Effect 2 Still A Possibility For PlayStation 3?

This is just maddening. First, we all assume that with EA at the helm, there's no way Mass Effect 2 would be exclusive to the Xbox 360. Then, it's officially revealed and there's no mention of a PlayStation 3 version. And now, they hint at a possibility...?

The guys over at VG247 were at the Game Developers Conference yesterday and spoke with Bioware's Ray Muzyka and Greg Zeschuk during a demo of Dragon Age: Origins. They asked if the hotly anticipated RPG sequel would ever come to the PS3, and although the answer was textbook when dealing with the press, it left an opening: "We have announced Mass Effect 2 for PC and Xbox 360," Muzyka said. "We have no comment beyond that." Now, for those of you who aren't in the journalism game, you may not recognize the difference between this comment and a flat-out "no, we aren't preparing a PS3 version." Well, there's a gigantic difference. EA's John Riccitiello did say at one point that Mass Effect 2 would be multiplatform, and although he could've been talking about the PC and 360, we'd like to think the PS3 will be included at some point. Saying, "we have no comment" is like a code that journalists interpret as, "we have something to say but we can't say it right now." If there was to be no PS3 version, there would be absolutely no problem with saying it directly, correct?

We may be grasping at straws but when Epic was asked if Gears of War would ever come to the PS3, they said simply, "no, it won't." ...and we believe them. They didn't say, "we can't comment on that." There's just a world of difference.

All EA cares about is money, and their available market would expand by a BIG amount if Mass Effect 2 went multi-plat. I think that's a no-brainer for them.

The guy above me makes a good point. PS3 has plenty of good exclusives -- MGS4, Uncharted and LBP, to name but a few -- why would getting this port from 360 be such a huge victory?

Sure PS3 have alot of exclusives coming but I really can't see myself passing up ME2 I loved playing the 1st one when I had 360 and its the only game I wish was on my PS3, hopefully they could release ME1 and 2 on the same blu-ray disc, probably wont happen tho

Maybe if you said GOW3 or Uncharted 2 you would have made more sense.

Okay here's the deal, by the time ME2 does release, the rrod and E74 error thing will have hit a head, people are going to stop defending the box and begin to jump ship to the superior console (possibly kicked into high gear by a price drop) and they will want to continue the series they began on the xbox so it's just a good idea.

Regarding the "no comment" I interpret this as saying "The current deal with Microsoft is that we cannot talk about or hint at the fact that this Xbox360 exclusive is yet another secretly 'timed' exclusive"

he's getting far from annoying... im intrigued by his idea that xbots will actually abandon it cuz of rrod and e74, instead of praising it further... im positive that there are many ppl that would support this theory... it just seems like common sence... after a while rrods will piss 2 many ppl off... and when (or if,) the 8th gen begins, and their 360's e74 or rrod, they will be even more SOL then they r now...

I think many who played ME one will definitely be buying ME2 whereas a number of PS3 owner responses who haven't played the game is "meh."

Although I'd like to see a PS3 release I'm just plain ecstatic that they are even making a sequel.

The 1st one was buggy as hell on the 360 which is why I picked it up for the PC. This is why I suggest any PS3 user to have a decent PC since a majority of the 360 exclusives trickle onto the PC. Even if the next one was ported to the PS3 I'd still pick it up for PC.

it isnt nonsence... if you already have a pc that is capable of playing 360 games, why spend 299 and 60 4 the game, when you can buy the same game on Steam for half price... only reason to own a 360 is to play the very few true exclusives it has (360 only)...

Reading some of the comments, I noticing a behavior that is plaguing today's gaming society. So I feel like I should give this PSA:

Look ppl, Mass Effect is a GREAT franchise. POINT BLANK PERIOD. And any real gamer would at least want the opportunity to play it on his/her console.

Tricking yourself into thinking games exclusive to other systems aren't a big deal b/c Sony's exclusive list surpasses all the others is just THAT; a trick on yourself.

I'm not saying that your should go play Halo or Halo Wars or Gears the 1st chance you get, but what I am saying is that Mass Effect is one of the Best RPG franchises this gen.

If the PS3 fans are starving for next-gen RPGs, why would some of them have an apathetic attitude towards Mass Effect? Because its not multiplat? Thats foolish.

So if you fall into this category...please stop tricking yourself. This type of behavior leads to fanboyism and you arguing with some douche online about how your system is better because of the quality and/or quantity of your system's exclusives.

Stop it plz!

I get what your saying, and I would like to try ME, I won't pretend I don't want to play SO4 as well, but I should also point out that being one of the best RPGs this gen isn't saying a whole lot. Maybe you could enlighten those of us who haven't played it what older RPG it might be on par with as far as quality?

Good for those who are interested in the Mass Effect story/gameplay. Even though I own a 360, I have never played or wanted to play ME. Don't know why but the whole idea and plot seems boring.

I'm in a dilemma when it comes to Mass Effect. On one hand, I liked the first game. On the other hand, there are too many other games better than this that are coming out; Uncharted 2 and Infamous (yes I said Infamous; Ben's opinion isn't law, you know) to name a few.

If they don't release for PS3, p*ss on them. They'll lose quite a bit of revenue that they could have gotten just by giving it to us PS3 owners.

But I do think it'll come out for PS3; it's EA, for cryin' out loud.

I would like to see Mass Effect 2 on the PS3 but I'm not going to riot at a Gamestop if Microsoft managed to stuff enough dollar bills in EA's G-string to keep it a 360 exclusive. Mass Effect is a good game and I hope EA's love for more money will out weight the money Microsoft is offering to keep this game on their side of the console wall.

And I like the idea of Microsoft losing Mass Effect as a exclusive. How many times when the PS3 lost exclusives like Final Fantasy and Tekken 6 and moments later 360 fanboys flood pro PS3 with the news?

Truth be told ME2 is a good game, I would not go as far as to say it's the best but it's good. That being said, to many companies are turning to this practice of accepting money in turn to make their games timed exclusives. How could they think somebody wants to pay 60 dollars for game X when it's been out on others systems for months and most of the time your able to buy game X for said system for less. It seems that these companies think the average person is an idiot.
I'll wait for this to hit the bargin bin if it really is coming to the PS3 and if it doesn't it's not like the PS3 needs this game.

i would not be surprised if EA announce a 'special' ME1+ME2 compilation for ps3 only. now THAT would sell, it would explain why they've held back on saying anything official AND it would give those people on ps3 only a chance to play the franchise from one disc.

Why would they give us ME2 if they haven't given us ME1? I wouldn't want to play just the second one what about the original story wise? If they make it a timed exclusive they better sell it as a Double pack for the PS3 containing Mass Effect 1 and 2...

I'd like to know they whole story and not just the last part....
