GDC 09: Raiden To Be The Hero Of A New Metal Gear?

Okay, let the speculation and debate begin.

What you're looking at here is the image that appeared after Hideo Kojima's Keynote speech at the Game Developer's conference, and if you want a close-up on that figure in the upper right, check out G4TV. Now, it seems obvious that Kojima is planning a brand new Metal Gear Solid entry, and that picture appears to be Raiden, the popular cyber-ninja that has been part of Snake's adventure since the beginning. Obviously, we're all thinking Kojima's project will focus on Raiden's back story in relation to the MGS story that came to its conclusion in last year's Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots. Therefore, we're thinking it may be a prequel with Raiden as the main character, which would be freakin' awesome as far as we're concerned. We still wonder about the studio's claim to appeal more to a Western gaming audience, and you know...if you think about it, Raiden as a main character might put the emphasis squarely on the action. Couldn't Raiden be the next major bad-ass in a gameplay setting similar to something like God of War? The possibilities seem limitless, and we think our prediction is plausible.

But who knows? We do know that Kojima will unveil this new game at E3, so we won't have much longer to wait. Whatever it is, though, we get the sneaking suspicion it'll be designed for both the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360...

for heavens sake not the 360, not because I hate it but because it will be inferior to MGS4 and won't use the ps3's potential.I can't stand microsoft thought.

I dont know the history well. But in MGS4 Raiden dont use guns... In order to appeal Western gamers, you have to hold a gun.

I dont think it'll be wise for Kojima to make a game in MGS size for xbox. Too many videos. It'll be HD, its gonna take up so much space. Expect another 4-5 hours of HD videos. It'll be play for 1 disc and then watch video for another disc.

Raiden? Really? :(
I still have to play MGS4 so my impression of him is still of a effeminate, wimpy, Snake wanna be... That was the one thing that spoiled MGS-SOL for me. We went from Snake to Mascara so fast I almost stopped playing the game.
I guess I need to play MGS4 ASAP and see how Hideo made that Britney Spears wanna be a bad a$$ hero...

Microsoft will surely get their hands on this on.
They're scared, remember when MGS4 was released and the PS3 sale suddenly increased by a bunch?

They'll do whatever they can to stop this one from becoming PS3 exclusive and thus, this game's quality will be lowered because of the 360.

Raiden is a touchy subject for me. You can put all the bells and whistles you want to on him and he's still Luigi to Snakes Mario. Simply, he's just not Snake. Maybe it's that old Kojima trickery. I always thought that Akiba would be a decent choice. He's a genome soldier so he resembles Snake. He's now Meryl's husband, so she could remain in the story. They can't continue with prequels can they? Plus, Metal Gear Akiba kinda rolls off o the tongue. All wishful thinking.

Oh crap... no 360. The only thing 360 is capable of is pulling PS3 down. I can't imagine MGS5 in 8 GB. Even 2 DVDs won't be enough. I want to see something as good as or even better than MGS4 and it can't be done on a 360. Please Kojima don't ditch PS3 as SE has.
Try to push the PS3 to it's full potential rather than pulling it down for the 360.

knowing Microsoft they'll probably make a special add-on to the 360 so it can handle whatever Kojima has to through at. maybe it will be another DVD drive that way the xbox360 owners wont have to change the disc. either way you know that people will pay for it

If you go by the what Raiden can do then I think he might be the right choice for the next Metal Gear.... But as they mentioned before to make it appeal more to the western gamers Raiden won't work as he doesn't use guns. And It might limit your game play capabilities if there are no other weapons and upgrades...

Someone mentioned Akiba... That might also work and I had this thought even when I was playing MGS4. He just has to harden up a bit. Or maybe it will be perfect as you see him grow from this insecure young mad, into the next hardened Soldier... He married Meryl... So maybe they get to her and give her a new form of Fox Die and she turns into this super villain chick, and he has to basically go up against her. Would make for a good story I think.

a lot of people don't like raiden and call him 'a pussy', but I think that he was a good character in MGS2 and his story could go really deep (but hopefully not too deep if you know what I mean).

He did in MGS3. So "if" he and Eva made one at that point, the kid could be up to age 50 or so since there's a 50 year period between that story and MGS4. So it's possible but probably unlikely.

I think a backstory of Raiden would be pointless. I mean thats what the Metal Gear DB was on the PSN for. All the back stories and the like are all in the MG DB.

How could you not want Raiden as the main character though? I was pissed you couldn't control him in MGS4. On top of that he has a ninja like feel to him. I want anything but a back story. I think we'll see what happens to Snake in the beginning of this new title though

I'll take any MGS game, yeah it could be with Raiden and if it is we will just have to live with it as there is no more Snake for the time being unless they bring him back in a prequel but I doubt that will ever happen.

As for it going on the 360, then so be it let it happen, they did that with Blue Odysey was it and that was 4 discs. so they can do it again with this for the 360 people.

I thought Kojima wasn't a big fan of Microsoft, hence no MGS4 for the 360.

He even took some jabs at them during the game.

Now, I know at least one of the MGS games was ported to the Xbox; but I thought someone else did it, like Itagaki wasn't involved with Ninja Gaiden Sigma 1 & 2.

Well, if Kojima does do a 360 version of Metal Gear, hopefully the game is developed for the PS3 first and ported down to the 360.

im intruiged that it's still called Metal Gear 'Solid'.

But i'm still stickng to my opinion that MGS is over, MGS4 rapped everything up clear.... Theres nothign more to tell, you can come up with these theories, radien or Big Bosses Past, Sunny's future sure its depth, but it's just irrelevant. Look i love MGS and would love another title, but you cant get one thats implausible and if they can prove me wrong , i'll be overjoyed.

For an exapmle look how The Terminator has become this century, before we had to classic movies, but then they made T3 which wasnt a bad idea,just wasnt excuted well, but now they have this shitty TV series amined for scene teenagers which is nothing like the original source material and now we're getting 3 more movies, Salvation looks appaling, i'm not even going waste my time going to the cinema for it. The point is i dont want the MGS series to become long winded like this.

What I meant is that Kojima said he wanted to do a "West Oriented" game. Since FPSs are all anyone I know plays these days, I imagine it will be his twist on an FPS. Like i said i HIGHLY doubt the new MGS and this mystery game will be one in the same (he said he's not going to be directly involved with the new MGS). But if they were, it might be a combination of the two. Plus if it were a prequel starring Raiden, he'd be a child soldier, and this would be before he learned all of his Snake-like stealth moves from the VR training that preceded MGS2. I certainly hope it won't be like that cause I'd much rather have stealth than FPS.

We all need to keep in mind what Metal Gear is though. It is stealth oriented. If you put a badass ninja as the main character it has to be more like tenchu and less like god of war. You have to keep the stealth element in order to call it Metal Gear. It's like making Gran Turismo into a fighting game.
