PS3 Launch Lines Begin (UPDATE)
UPDATE: We've got some more Best Buy campers for ya, and these guys are fully prepared, just like the others we saw yesterday. Check out yet another Best Buy location...we drove in, got out, and this is what we saw:
But oh, the Best Buy isn't where it ended. Not at all. Driving across the street, we've got a Target, and at first glance, there wasn't a soul waiting out front. Then we realized they had them all crammed in along the side of the building under a tarp. It was dark and foreboding over there, but you know what? They seemed good...to...go:
What you see here is a good old-fashioned tailgating party of sorts, complete with a TV, Xbox 360, several coolers, and a bunch of chairs. Because it was so dark, this is the best shot we could get (and the TV came out looking like some sort of weird square alien), but it tells the tale. They've got one next-gen console, but they desperately want another!
As for some interesting bits of info we discovered during our rounds tonight-
A Best Buy representative said they had 32 PS3s for the launch, and that's exactly how many people would receive one at 8 a.m. tomorrow morning. Of course, had Sony not sliced the shipment in half, it would've been 64, but you work with what you've got. There appeared to be more than 32 people outside, but supposedly, Best Buy had informed them how many PS3s they had to sell.
As for that Target, they're getting a measly 12, and God only knows what kind of process they're going to use. Best Buy is giving out tickets when they open after everyone has lined up; it seems more like a free-for-all in the making outside Target, but at least they've got the 360 and a lot of refreshments (not to mention that tarp) to keep them occupied until the bum rush starts in the morning.
At Best Buy, for the most part. But we've seen other die-hard gamers camping out in front of Target, Sears, and Wal-Mart. When the truly hardcore get painted into a corner, the last resort centers on camping gear and a hardy spirit.
Well, let's just hope it doesn't start raining.
We're going to update more pics of the ever-growing PS3 lines tomorrow night, just so you can have an idea of this level of...erm...dedication. While you sit all content at home, sipping a mug of coffee (perhaps even with your PS3 all assured, you lucky devil), you can marvel at just how far people will go to secure themselves a hot new next-gen console.
