Sony: Big Announcement Next Week?

Well, there wasn't much in the way of huge announcements at the Game Developers Conference, although we did learn about the new Ratchet and Clank Future: A Crack in Time. However, it seems that Sony is preparing something significant for Tuesday, March 31.

According to Kotaku, that's the time when Sony will make a big announcement of some kind, and many would like to believe it's the much-rumored price cut. Then again, considering Sony's insistence that a price drop isn't coming any time soon, we're expecting something different; besides, why not just announce the price cut at the GDC? Why wait a few days? Another possibility is that Sony will be updating the PS3's web browser, which could be kinda cool and perhaps more plausible than a price drop. Kotaku suggested that the PS2 might drop to $99, which would make sense as PS2 sales have been on the steep decline as of late. The system has fared extremely well at the $129 price point for quite some time, but now may be the time to institute what could be the final retail price drop. We'd like to think it's software-related; that Sony might lift the lid on one of the new mysterious PS3 exclusives heading our way (maybe it's the one we know about...?), but that's just more speculation. What ideas do you have? What does Sony have in store for us next week?

If it is indeed a PS3 price cut, that'll make all the major headlines for the week. But even if it's something smaller and not quite so huge, we'll still tell ya about it. It's kinda what we do.

Same here, and it's impossible they gonna announce games, they always do that in E3, a possible update on the PSN or a new hardware for the PS3.
It could even be the rumoured PSP2 or something like that.
But if it's a price cut, you can expect some uproar in the gaming world especially Microsoft.

What if Sony's big annoucement turns out to be exactly that nothing. A BIG FAT ZERO! how cool would that be not that it is ever going to happen but say it did how would the world cope without it lol ?

It has got to be the firmware update, although I thought that was supposed to be released this week as I read somewhere that a Sony employee at GDC said it would be coming the week of GDC. Idk? Better be good though because I'm going bananas over here! ;)

I dont think the announcement will be the 2.70 Firmware update. If they are saying its big then im almost certain, though the details for the update or web browser improvement may coincide with the announcement.

Wow, a big surprise? For me?? My birthday just went by too ..hmmm what could it be? There are so many things (as all the posts above have noted) that it could be. I'm hoping for either a new exclusive big name title, or ...perhaps a huge firmware update, that would be exciting ...as anything free would be.

I think a decent PS3 browser is sorely over due. I cannot even watch news clips from the CNN or BBC websites. The PS3 web browser has been very weak in many areas.

Either the price cut, or something about the new 2.70 system update that I heard of some futher rumours that could easily be done on the Sony platform. I heard of 2 missing features Live has over PSN. I heard the update will also incorporate Voice messaging and Private In-game chat functionality. That is something that PSN badly needs. Another feature I hope we get sometime soon is ON THE FLY GAME INVITING like you can also do on the Crapbox. Here's hoping.

Twisted Metal for PS3 would be silly-sweet. Though I wouldn't call it super important news, awesome news, but hopefully the announcement is even more significant. I agree with some above, hopefully it's a firmware that adds dozens of new features - better browser support, backwards compatability, more video codecs playback, etc.

I'd be psyched if they allowed playback of MKVs so i don't have to convert stuff.

If it's not a price drop, I'd really like to see them announce the addition of like 12 more Greatest Hits. Plenty of games have qualified:

Heavenly Sword
Ratchet & Clank
Uncharted
Rainbow Six Vegas 2
Call Of Duty IV
Devil May Cry IV
Army Of Two
Grand Theft Auto IV
Metal Gear Solid IV (as of March 12)

Most of these games are still selling for nearly full price, despite being more than a year old in some cases.

They haven't announced ANY Greatest Hits since July 28th.
