FFXIII Update: Story Complete, Graphics at 80%, No DLC
There was a time when the idea of "downloadable content" seemed both silly and magical. And while many old-school RPG fans will simply say, "eh, we don't need DLC," it may be disappointing to learn that Final Fantasy XIII may be without extra content.
According to the unofficial FFXIII site, the latest issue of Dengeki PlayStation magazine has some new info on the hotly anticipated RPG. First off, it says the developers have completed the Story campaign and the graphics are "around 80% complete." As of now, they're working on honing and refining the game's combat mechanic, and that any screenshots or videos you've seen thus far are all from "older builds of the game," and they've gone past that point now. But when asked about possible downloadable content for the game, they said there aren't currently any such plans. Some may call this a step backwards, especially considering the apparent need for DLC in this new generation; gamers have already gotten used to the concept of extra goodies soon after a title releases. But it doesn't appear as if Square-Enix will indulge you.
For our part, we don't need DLC for FFXIII. It might be nice, but we really don't want developers to get to the point where they can rely on DLC to make a game better...we want the game to be as awesome as humanly possible when it launches. Like in the old days. Plain and simple. FFXIII, if you've forgotten, is still on track to launch later this year in Japan, but of course, we lowly North American fans have to wait longer. Stay tuned for more.

As I'm sure it's been said several times, multiplayer games and games where not everything works as an interconnected whole (like racing games) can benefit from DLC, but an RPG better include the whole game, or people will NOT be happy.

Glad to see they are coming along nicely and that it's almost complete. I hope there are plenty of secrets and side missions to complete, end game and throughout. That's the main thing that keeps me playing (and even going through it a second time) extra goodies. I did not like FFXII which was very depressing, but it did have a lot of extra things to do and collect on the side. FFX however, was awesome (i'm going through it now actually) and had plenty to do after the story is long over.
Hmm ... I wonder what the trophies are going to be like

IMO SE would be more than happy to pull out additional content for MS console, but they CANT do it with this title because FFXIII is exclusive to the PS3 in Japan and it doesnt make sense to produce DLC for only "TEH western market", leaving their Japanese fanbase out in the cold.

If people really want DLC, FFXIII may have already been out. It just would have not been entirely complete, and later Square-Enix would release the rest of the games with DLC. That would be so much more enticing, wouldn't it?

if they're talking on the US alone, it's possible that the FFXIII version on the xbox 360 will outsell the ps3 version but on worldwide sales, it's impossible. remember, FFXIII on japan is exclusive to ps3. that reason alone is enough that the xbox 360 version of FFXIII cannot outsell the ps3 version worldwide

Reading the comments I can't help but wonder isn't the DLC the new Online issue.
I mean no more than few weeks ago Ben in his editorial explained that not all games need online and most of the commentators agreed.
And here we have a very similar case. Not all games need DLC. It makes more sense and it's easier to create a DLC for a game like Burnout (a few new missions, new car etc) or Killzone (new map and maybe a new gun).
On the other hand, games like FF and MGS or even Uncharted and Assassin's Creed are heavily story driven and by the time you finish a game the story is pretty much told and you can hardly add anything to it.
After all every FF game has some kind of DLC (extra content) already build in. After you finish the "Story" you can go on playing and beating all these extreme Ultima bosses. By the time you finish with them all you are at 99Lvl wit 99999HP and 9999MP and all the ultimate weapons. What else would you like to get to extend the life of the game - more of these bosses.
But hey, that's just my opinion.
Kind regards

But I warn this SE, Xbox 360 uses DVD and it was cracked long time ago.
Even if there's 20 million people playing FFXIII, I bet majority will be playing the pirated ones which means less than 10 million gamers bought the original.
Look at Halo 3, it sold 9m copy but there's almost 30m 360 sold.
But Blu-Ray has yet to be cracked(or never will, but well, that's probably the reason why the PS3 isn't selling well in places with a lot of piracy especially mine...)

50gb Images of BD are also still prohibitively large to obtain. Even compressed, BD Images are 0ver 30gb (I am talking images, not rips). I think the ps3 will be safe for a long time against this sort of piracy, which should be a HUGE incentive for developers.
Several of my Xbot buddies own two Xboxs at all times: one for legit purchases and online play, the other modded for playing pirated games offline. Good for MS hardware sales, I am sure.
