Current PlayStation 3 Drops To $299, New Model Announced

Update: As if you really needed to know by now, but...April Fools. We figured Sony might be annoyed if we didn't issue the clarification, as obvious as it is. ;)

Original Story:

Well, that was tricky, Sony. You make us all think the "big announcement" is little more than a PS2 price drop, and then, you wait 24 hours to give us the bombshell. Whatever; we can roll with that!

As of Monday, April 6, the current PlayStation 3 model will drop in price to $299. This is the price cut some analysts have predicted and gamers have requested since the start of 2009, and although Sony has indeed remained insistent that they had "no such plans," the economy may have gotten to them. Either that, or they're just taking the opportunity to give everyone what they want and simultaneously provide us with a new model...an upgrade, as it turns out. This new PS3 model will feature a 160GB hard drive, and - wait for it - the return of backwards compatibility! Well, partially, anyway. They won't be re-implementing that graphics synthesizer chip from the original 60GB PS3 that allowed for almost full b/c for PS2 software. However, they have decided to bring back software emulation, which means that most all of PS1 titles will work on the machine, and "about 80%" of all PS2 software will work, too.

Furthermore, and for a limited time only, this new PS3 model will include a copy of Resistance 2, tossed in for no extra charge. This means the new SKU will come with the 160GB hard drive, Insomniac's brilliant shooter, and backwards compatibility, all for the price we're all currently used to: $399. The PS3 that's sitting on store shelves right now? That will get the $100 price drop, and of course, you won't be getting any extra goodies with it. We have heard that some retailers may do something special for this new PS3 model, too; something about Blu-Ray movie promotions has been mentioned, but there's nothing concrete just yet. We'll let you know.

So anyway, say "thank you," everyone. It's basically what you wanted.

This would be a good idea: sell the crap out of the 160gb SKU because they would probably lose less money on it (harddrives are cheap and software emulation probably isn't too pricey), but offer the $299 SKU to please shareholders and publishers and also to shut everyone else the he11 up.

Well guys, i've got a good feeling that the news might be true. Well first of all, why would Ben want to make up this whole news up? well it could be a very good april's fool joke to us, but what might other people think of it? especially the medias, Ben could get into serious trouble for reporting this kind of false information. Worst, he could even get sued for reporting false news. Think about what would really happen to this site's credibility if this news were to turn out to be fake. i was about to punish myself for buying my ps3 a year too early untill i started reading the comments and thought: "owww yeah.."

best news would be a firmware upgrade with full software based bc, so my 40gb ps3 eats ps2 games as well since i dont have any ps1 games.

If it's NOT an April Fools' joke, does this mean that they're technically dropping the 160GB bundle model down $100 to $399.99 (with the added backward compatibility) and once 80GB models are gone, the bundle will be the only option? I was so hyped about this I only read half the article. Then I threw on some pants and ran outside. Got in my car and started speeding over to best buy to pick up a new PS3. I was too excited and accidentally hit this old lady pulling out of the grocery store! When I went to check if she was alright, she was like "ohhhh my neck!" I felt SO bad, not a good start to my day. After the ambulance came and took to the ER, and I gave my info to the police, I got back in my car with my ticket, and carefully headed over to best buy. The guy working there told me they haven't been notified of any price reductions of the PS3... I was angry, and confused. So all in all, good april fools joke Ben...

Hey Ben, Kotaku has picked up this article and says it is one of the worst April fools jokes.

And yeah, posting the article on 3/31/2008 caught me off guard as well. If it was posted on 4/1/2009 like it should have been, well then I would not have been so easily fooled for a while (about a minute or so).

By the way, I read yesterday that the PS2 price drop doesn't affect the UK. Is this true? And if so, will the PS3 (if not true, eventual) pricedrop be the same??

Haha nice one. I bet there are a couple of people out there that is pretty p***** off with you. But hey a joke is a joke and that was a good one. Cruel, but still very good.

Yesterday the funniest thing happened with a friend of ours. He got stuck in an elevator... He called us plus the management and all that. But seeing it was April Fools no believed him and just thought it was a joke...

Meanwhile he was really stuck and everyone ignored him... Eventually 4 Hours later he convinced us and we got someone to get him out.

What a day to actually find yourself in such a situation... How's that for S**** luck.

I do not respect Sony because they are greedy and un-customer friendly. I hate Sony’s penchant for pricy proprietary products, and they frequently come across as indifferent to their customers’ desires. Even though many customers want backwards compatibility and a $100.00 price drop for the PS3, Sony stubbornly doesn’t give a hoot during these tough economic times. Need more proof that Sony is stubborn? When my backwards compatible PS3 stopped working, a Sony tech support rep gave me the choice of either shipping the unit in for repair or exchanging it at the store where it was purchased. After I exchanged the unit at the store, I found the new unit was not backwards compatible as the tech support representative suggested. However, that was not the only mistake that led me into forfeiting my limited edition PS3. On the Sony Customer Loyalty site for training retail sales associates – Sony’s own training module erroneously stated all PS3 was backwards compatible. If you think these mistakes would persuade Sony’s tech support Manager Noland Haas into replacing my inadvertently surrendered backwards compatible unit, you would be wrong. After confirming they had backward-compatible units on hand, Mr. Hass instead offered me four games and a “Thank you” for giving them opportunity to correct their mistakes. And apparently Sony’s legal department feels the same way. They lacked the professional courtesy to respond to my certified letter that conveyed my threat to sue. So don’t be fool into drinking the Kool-Aid; Sony does not care about honoring you as a customer. I am tired of Sony’s attitude of “We’ll give you what WE want and you’ll like it, saps!”I don’t think Microsoft has such a dismissive attitude towards their customers, so I respect them more and I’m glad they’re kicking Sony’s stubborn, arrogant a**. And by the way, does Sony own this site? The editor seems like a giddy Sony shill. Ugh. I’d appreciate a little more journalistic objectivity and less high-pitched groupie squealing, please.

yous are complaning about the price.
here in oz were paying 700 bucks for one.
plain with no game bundled nothing.
and i was stupid enough to buy one on launch for 1000 bucks.
no wonder the 360 is selling better 400 bucks for the pro 60GB with 2 games HDMI cable against 700 for a 80GB ps3 no games no cable.
i know wich one i would buy
