SCEA: MAG Is "Basically Like An Iteration Of SOCOM"

Update: We kinda figured we'd get word from Sony on this, just because of the word "iteration."  We knew MAG really had nothing to do with the SOCOM franchise, but as we were taking a direct quote from a source, we didn't want to say anything.  But indeed, Sony has clarified, just so everyone is aware:

"We'd just like to clarify that this is a misstatement. MAG is a brand new IP and is unrelated to SOCOM. It is not a sequel nor built upon SOCOM. It will be a brand new experience."

Original Story:

We know a lot of you are anxiously awaiting fresh updates for MAG, the supposedly groundbreaking military MMO that Sony unveiled at E3 2008. Well, we still don't have anything in the way of media, but we do have a few new details for you.

In talking to VG247 at the Game Developers Conference last week, SCEA hardware marketing head man John Koller first said that MAG could only be done on the PlayStation 3. Basically, the game needs the system's processor speed in order to "showcase 256 players at any given time, and their actions." This, we don't doubt, but we've been looking for more in the way of actual game info, and we finally have something we can sink our teeth into. Said Koller:

"It's basically like an iteration of SOCOM, where you're maybe commanding the SEALs, and someone else has the Rangers, and the Green Berets, and so on."

Well, at least now we have something to picture in our minds. A movie of MAG was shown during the unveiling at E3, but we didn't see anything in the way of gameplay so we were pretty much left in the dark. Now, we've played SOCOM, and to have it compared to MAG from a conceptual - if not structural - standpoint gives us a better idea of what to expect. Of course, it's just a little chew toy tossed our way, but we hope Sony will release more info soon. In the meantime, see if you can picture what Koller described; something similar to SOCOM, only on a downright massive scale...

Remember, MAG is still set to release some time later this year, so we're past due for some media, guys!

I can't wait for this one. They seem to be keeping information on it under pretty tight wraps though. I hope that this doesn't mean it's going to be a while before we see it. Has there been any predictions on launch dates yet?

No. Just "TBA 2009" or maybe "Q4 2009."

This is one of those games i can't get too excited over, not sure why. I hear 200 plus players and i think huge frag fest.

Hard for me to really care about this game when nothing has been released as far as gameplay footage is concerned. I care about this game as much as i care about Alan Wake, which is to say i don't....for now. Hopefully sony can deliver

I'm not excited over MAG at all, maybe when more info comes out. I'm not into online only games, and never will be.

Not entirely sure how many socom games you've played, but if they are saying that its like socom then i can almost guarantee that its third person

1rd huh? lol. Anyway, I'm just kind of sick of FPS games. Nothing fresh there. And I knew Socom was 3rd, I was just hoping that being 3rd person was one of the things they meant by that statement. One reason I like 3rd person so much is that it feels more realistic and cover systems can work better with 3rd than 1st.

If it's anything like socom it should be amazing online. Me and my mates have only just sunk our teeth into it as we live in the EU and it is really addictive online, gotta love it! A few more maps would be nice, but yeah looking forward to MAG alot!

Cant wait for this game. If this game brings vehicles, such as fighter aircraft to the table, I will never play another game again.

A game featuring 256 players in a large scale battle featuring multiple assets is going to be amazing if they pull it off right!!

They need to have a 1st to 3rd person option it, and not force a camera on anyone!!

It's from the devs of Socom so it's no surprise that it could be an 3rd person shooter that will beat Warhawk

As much as I love Warhawk, I agree. If they enhance the graphics and make it play like SOCOM (without the messed up servers on launch day) Then you can stick a fork into Warhawk..It will be cooked.

Although I do worry about 265 players on a small map...The maps are going to have to be huge in order to make the game so that it's about strategy in squads instead of just run and gun and hope you live.

Does the PS3 have the capability to handle a whole world instead of little maps? that would be sweet. Chose which front you want to fight on.

SOCOM was great in the smaller 8v8 battles on relatively small intricate maps. Once they upped the games to 16v16, it changed the gameplay and feel of the game. The feeling of SOCOM died with the 3rd installment.

I know, I know. You could always set the maximum players and map size (most of the time) but having this option broke up the community. Confrontation completely killed the series for me. Gameplay was alright, but the menus, lobbies, lack of community, and long load times did it in.

@Nynja

Most people that I know play Confrontation 8v8. The 16v16 is not all that popular. But ymmv with your clan...

Confrontation is actually a VERY addictive game, and is more in tune with SOCOM II than III.

Does anyone else get a little giddy when they hear a developer say that the game could only be built for the PS3? Especially if Sony hasn't paid for an exclusive?

I know that some money somewhere has probably exchanged hands, but it's still nice to see some developers who refuse to lower their standards of a game just to follow the rest of the market.

I do, and one day the xbots will have to admit it, which will mean that all the best next gen games will have to be made for PS3.

This is where the truly next-gen experience will come from, not just better graphics but new experiences that need the processing power.

I'm pretty excited for this game. It's something that hasn't been done on a console before, and if it's going to boast large scale battles, I'm in.

That is to say there are unlockables/upgrades/perks/etc. to achieve throughout the experience, I really can't see this going wrong.

However, that being said, I am a little skeptical about the gameplay. I just hope they get it 'right'.

Sorry, I don't like SOCOM, so I don't care about this game. I own SOCOM, gave it a chance, didn't like it. I found it boring, and the people online were idiots.

I've seen the screenshot on the forums here, it looks like a really cool game, but is it only online or is their offline multiplayer and do you have to pay for this game online i just remember awhile back they were still figuring that out if their was going to be a small fee or not. But anywase i wouldn't mind trying it.

Wow.... just checked out some screen shots for MAG and it turns out that it actually is a First Person Shooter.....
Kinda strange... but maybe they are trying to appeal to a wider fan base

EDIT: From the looks of the shots though, i really do believe that the game will come this year. It looks to be coming along nicely
