SCEA: MAG Is "Basically Like An Iteration Of SOCOM"
Update: We kinda figured we'd get word from Sony on this, just because of the word "iteration." We knew MAG really had nothing to do with the SOCOM franchise, but as we were taking a direct quote from a source, we didn't want to say anything. But indeed, Sony has clarified, just so everyone is aware:
"We'd just like to clarify that this is a misstatement. MAG is a brand new IP and is unrelated to SOCOM. It is not a sequel nor built upon SOCOM. It will be a brand new experience."
Original Story:
We know a lot of you are anxiously awaiting fresh updates for MAG, the supposedly groundbreaking military MMO that Sony unveiled at E3 2008. Well, we still don't have anything in the way of media, but we do have a few new details for you.
In talking to VG247 at the Game Developers Conference last week, SCEA hardware marketing head man John Koller first said that MAG could only be done on the PlayStation 3. Basically, the game needs the system's processor speed in order to "showcase 256 players at any given time, and their actions." This, we don't doubt, but we've been looking for more in the way of actual game info, and we finally have something we can sink our teeth into. Said Koller:
"It's basically like an iteration of SOCOM, where you're maybe commanding the SEALs, and someone else has the Rangers, and the Green Berets, and so on."
Well, at least now we have something to picture in our minds. A movie of MAG was shown during the unveiling at E3, but we didn't see anything in the way of gameplay so we were pretty much left in the dark. Now, we've played SOCOM, and to have it compared to MAG from a conceptual - if not structural - standpoint gives us a better idea of what to expect. Of course, it's just a little chew toy tossed our way, but we hope Sony will release more info soon. In the meantime, see if you can picture what Koller described; something similar to SOCOM, only on a downright massive scale...
Remember, MAG is still set to release some time later this year, so we're past due for some media, guys!

Hard for me to really care about this game when nothing has been released as far as gameplay footage is concerned. I care about this game as much as i care about Alan Wake, which is to say i don't....for now. Hopefully sony can deliver

A game featuring 256 players in a large scale battle featuring multiple assets is going to be amazing if they pull it off right!!
They need to have a 1st to 3rd person option it, and not force a camera on anyone!!

Although I do worry about 265 players on a small map...The maps are going to have to be huge in order to make the game so that it's about strategy in squads instead of just run and gun and hope you live.
Does the PS3 have the capability to handle a whole world instead of little maps? that would be sweet. Chose which front you want to fight on.

I know, I know. You could always set the maximum players and map size (most of the time) but having this option broke up the community. Confrontation completely killed the series for me. Gameplay was alright, but the menus, lobbies, lack of community, and long load times did it in.

I know that some money somewhere has probably exchanged hands, but it's still nice to see some developers who refuse to lower their standards of a game just to follow the rest of the market.

That is to say there are unlockables/upgrades/perks/etc. to achieve throughout the experience, I really can't see this going wrong.
However, that being said, I am a little skeptical about the gameplay. I just hope they get it 'right'.

Kinda strange... but maybe they are trying to appeal to a wider fan base
EDIT: From the looks of the shots though, i really do believe that the game will come this year. It looks to be coming along nicely
