Brutal Legend Designer Says "Don't Worry About Sales"
Everyone loves to jabber on about sales, but the true artists know that sales aren't a direct indication of quality. Just ask mastermind Tim Schafer.
In speaking to the MTV Multiplayer blog, Schafer said that fans "worry too much about sales." It's just unfortunate that Schafer's fantastic games haven't performed better on the sales charts; Psychonauts, for instance, was one of the best reviewed titles of last generation, but it didn't sell for beans. Of course, if a game doesn't sell well, this can - and does - have negative consequences on the business side of things. But Schafer says that if you "make a cool game, publishers want to talk to you." So you shouldn't concern yourself with the future of Double Fine Studios; just take a good look at Brutal Legend, and if it's standard Schafer fare (in other words, it rocks), than you should reward them for their efforts. Schafer did admit that this most recent project is a "more commercial game" than Psychonauts, but he says it was for "creative purposes" and had nothing whatsoever to do with a desire to appeal more to the mainstream masses. ...and we really do believe him, too.
Sales don't mean everything, but it'd be naive to say they mean nothing. We're just hoping that one of these days, Schafer will be appropriately rewarded for his work, and we can almost guarantee that Brutal Legend will be well worth your money. Note we said "almost;" we're not oracles, or anything. Let's just say we have confidence.
