SCEA: Blu-Ray "Gaining A Lot Of Traction" For PlayStation 3
Many will claim that Sony used the PlayStation 3 as a sort of Trojan Horse for Blu-Ray but these days, after Blu-Ray has already secured the HD format victory, the situation may have actually reversed.
As reported by VG247, SCEA hardware marketing boss John Koller said that thanks to the rising Blu-Ray market and the consumer's connected interest to the PS3, hardware sales should benefit. Said Koller: "We are looking at a general move by the consumer to understanding the complete value of the PS3, inclusive of Blu-Ray is really gaining a lot of traction for us." He said Sony expects sales of the next-gen console to rise 15% this year in comparison to fiscal 2008, and he also added that the PSP's Remote Play feature will help boost handheld sales as well. The PS3 will also get help from plenty of great software, produced by both first- and third-party developers, and Koller says the "lineup's very strong." We won't argue with that, nor will we argue with the idea that Blu-Ray should have a positive impact on PS3 sales. The only thing stopping it from having a more marked impact is the fact that the system remains somewhat expensive, and standalone BD players have dropped a great deal over the past few years.
Anyway, there's no doubt that Blu-Ray is a driving force for the PS3 and as it begins to eat into the DVD market a little more, and more people desire high-definition in their media viewing, it should translate to a continual rising of hardware sales.

But then there's been other movies where you don't notice much difference at all. The only ones I buy on Blu ray are the blockbusters like Batman and 300...they look amazing on it.
Oh and if you're into animations and CG's definitely. I rented Ratatouille with my girfriend when we first got the PS3 and the amount of detail you could see was crazy.

When producing BD versions of movies, they actually remaster the film to suit the resolution, from the original film. Classics released on BD should almost always be true HD quality, and not just a pre-upscaled version of the DVD.

Just hope that people will start realizing that buying a PS3 is way more worth it than just buying a stand alone Blu Ray player. That way the PS3 sales will shoot through the roof.
And whenever the price drop happens it'll leave the 360 in the dust and even start eating away at the Wii's success as we can already see the Wii has had it's phase but without ANY software it won't go for long. The PS2 is now taking the "shine" away from the Wii...

We were told during the run up to the launch of the 360 and PS3 how this 'next generation' thing was all about HD. Sony really bought into that message and put their money where their mouth was with BluRay. Microsoft on the other hand offered mere lip service.
Nice to see BluRay paying off for Sony.

Regarding HD streaming or downloads. a) bandwidth is not there except in spots here and there, nor will it be in the next 5-10 years, b) BluRay already uses aggressive compression to compress the actual HD video into 50GB, if you further compress that video source to get it into approximately 5GB, you lose a tone of quality - and there is simply zero argument against this, it's pure math, c) people in rural areas and other unconnected locations will always require a disc format.

So, why not stay home, put the BluRay in the PS3, and microwave the popcorn. You could even order in pizza and still spend less than you would at the theater. Plus you have your own home comforts and more than likely better visual quality than the theater.
