Does The PS3 Have More Stable Software Than The 360?

We all know about the reliability catastrophe that is the Xbox 360. There's no denying that Microsoft basically screwed everyone over by releasing a shoddy machine that breaks about 30% of the time, and further screwed everyone over by taking more than two years to fix it. And now, even if the "Red Ring of Death" system failure is out of the way, we've heard about a new nasty error that crashes 360 machines. But that's not the point of this article; it's more about the software.

Of course, I can only use evidence from my own personal experiences and the experiences of people I know. Therefore, I'm asking a question in the headline; I'm not making a statement of fact. But let me break this down: I'm currently playing Star Ocean: The Last Hope, and it has frozen up on me twice and failed to load once in a span of 14 hours of gameplay. Before that, I played Gears of War 2, and as awesome as that game is, I remember writing a whole article dedicated to the glitchiness of the title. Grenades getting stuck on tree limbs, crazy death animations, game progression hitches (can't open a door because the robot won't move), etc. Before that, I played Lost Odyssey, which was prone to freezing in battle; it happened at least 20 times during my 50 hours of game time. And lastly, there was The Orange Box, and although it's certainly better than the PS3 version, it still crashed on me more than once as I went through Half-Life 2. The point is this: I can't seem to play an Xbox 360 game all the way through without running into something like this at least once.

I would also like to say that I'm on my very first 360, which I bought in the summer of 2007. I'm the only one I know who has been this lucky, as most are already on their third or fourth 360 console. But how "lucky" am I? Why does this continue to happen? On the PS3, the last games I've played have been Killzone 2, Prince of Persia, Resistance 2, and Mirror's Edge...no problems anywhere, ever. Nearly identical experiences have been reported by most everyone I know so I want to know, quite simply, why? Hey, I have a 360 for a reason. Those games I just mentioned are great reasons. But why can't I seem to make it through a single solitary 360 game - exclusive or not - without encountering an issue of some kind? I've got 22 games for the PS3 and I think I've had a freeze happen twice; once with Grand Theft Auto IV and once with SOCOM: U.S. Navy SEALs Confrontation. But weird glitches in the gameplay? Frequent crashes? Other screw-ups? Never. So I suppose you know what my question will be to PS3/360 owners...

Does this sound familiar at all? Or is it just me (and everyone I know)? I used to say I'd get multiplatform games on the PS3 because I prefer the controller, and while that remains true, the primary reason seems to center on software stability. If it's a PS3 game, I can be almost guaranteed of having no problems; if it's a 360 game, I can almost be guaranteed of the opposite. Why?

Yes the PS3 has more stable games than the 3fixme. It wouldn't be a Microsoft product if it didn't have any bugs. ie- Vista, Windows Me

Sony actually wants customers to stay with them for a very long time, that is why they have a quality product. Not like Microsoft just focusing on the 3fixme one day and then focusing on the 7whatever the next day.

lol. I hate Micro$oft. My windows computer has crashed 11 times since September. I am waiting for the comparison of FFXIII. Hmmm. 1 bluray vs 3+ dvds. then there's graphics, sounds, framerate, and freezing. We'll get an estimate when ACC is released with the demo.

lol 6 discs :P i hope that xbox users at least get charged more for that, they could call it "disc costs" :P because it kinda doesnt make sence that we pay the same price that they do when they have all that extra packaging and discs :P its only fare that they pay more, espesually after taking our exclusive :P

FFXIII will be the proof that the 360 wont be able to stay in the race SE is cliaming FFXIII is going to use 100% of the PS3, that being said KZ2 only used 60% and reports said that the PS3 was only console powerful enough to run it. It will be interesting to see what happens.

ffrulez: I'm guessing those numbers are in terms of GB? In which case it would be closer to 10 or 11 discs since a DVD is 4.7GB. That would be funny: 10 discs. It really should cost 360 gamers like twice the price for shipping and packaging, like it was stated before.

Everyone should face it. The PS3 has better software which leads to better games. It really is hard to compare "exclusives" which only appear on one system but, Ben, you are once again right. Star Ocean: the Last Hope froze up so many times it took me over a week to beat a boss. In fact, I got it day of release and have not yet beat it because of this.

Even with multiplatform, the PS3 is better, but that might be because developers release the PS3 edition after the 360, taking more time to fix flaws. I certainly noticed this with Eternal Sonata, NHL 09, Prince of Persia, Oblivion, and hopefully, with The Last Remnant (I cried when I saw the framerate and then again when it froze as often as Star Ocean)

I wouldn't say the PS3 is perfect. I have had it freeze on me, but no where nearly as common as on my 360. I have had Fallout 3 and Suikoden (PSN) freeze on me...once each. I can live with that. I only wish developers would realize that producing games for the PS3 isn't a nightmare that will spawn a monstrous debt-load.

PS3 gamers are getting frustrated and WANT to these games to come their way...on time. Why make us wait 3 more months for a game that came out on the 360 3 months ago? You are alienating the PS3. Perhaps this is why the PS3 had such a terrible start.

I wish I could answer that without just taking a shot in the dark but as it is that's all I can do: The software is just as rushed as the machine was. Box it up and ship it out, never mind all the pertinent testing; just get it out there, or just get it out there before the PS3 version is released.

You do know that it's his DVD drive failing right? I mean if this was a wide spread problem and everyone was complaining and it happened in the same spot almost every time I could see software being the issue, but it's not. Unfortanatly MS contracted for a really shitty DVD midway through their Falcon line and it fails at the touch of a feather... or at the pounce of a dog as was my case.

I had problems with the browser freezing up until around the 2.42(?) firmware, but it's been quite stable since unless I go to certain sites that have 'unfriendly' code (facebook, for one). The 2.50(?) Flash upgrade helped a lot too! I DO think, though, it would be nice if they would port Firefox (or a more simplified version of it) to PS3 as it's browser...even barebones w/o add-on support, etc. would be better than what it is, but it looks like the 256MB system RAM might be hurting this feature a bit.

Ive had problems with joystick for like two months now.It loads the top of the page then I cant scroll down any farther. I can close it but I have no control in the xmb and have to shut it off. Kinda sucks ive used the ps3 less and less for the internet lately.

WHAT a Sega Dreamcast a beefed up Nintendo 64, those are 2 different companies and a Dreamcast was way better than the PS1 or all the other consoles of its days, & the main reason the Dreamcast failed was because of the release date it was to late for the PS1 era and to early into the PS2 era. so in the end the Sega Dreamcast is more like the Sony PS3, if the dreamcast had released in '95 we would be playing some very different vidya games.

The N64 was was more like the wii with good games, it was directed at kids and was really cool looking.

Touche. I lived with someone who got one right when it came out, and was not compelled to leap into the next gen at all. Wasn't until I saw a friend playing Uncharted (followed by watching a blu-ray) that I decided it was time.

Except the DC was never meant to be a competitor to the PS1, that would've been the Saturn; and by your latter statement, you seem to know the DC was a competitor of the PS2.

So, stating the DC was "way better" than the PS1 is pointless. Was the DC more powerful than the PS1? Yes. Was it better? Graphics wise... yes. And the DC had plenty of great games -- I still have my DC and games.

However, don't knock the PS1. There is a reason the PS1 was number one that gen -- because it had plenty of great games.

Actually the Dreamcast was a superior system than the PS2 only thing that held it back was the lack of a DVD drive. If Sega had pushed their development of their system a bit longer and made use of the said format we would all be playing a Dreamcast2 and not PS3 but the rest is history.

Soul Calibur on the dreamcast has way better effects and polish than Soul Calibur 2 on the PS2, But the lack of space on CD's as compared to DVD forced developers to keep their polycounts low hence on the surface it does not look as sharp as the sequel. Even though the DC's hardware was faster and more powerful (it renders better and effects looked sharper) lack of a DVD drive is what killed it. you could say the timing of its release or bla bla bla but I blame its development for not investing in the new format.

Short point: Dreamcast is a supperior system than the PS2 just w/o a DVD drive. God it would have been nice if it did just to watch Sega and Sony go at it again.

Ok now on the PS3, say what you will but just the fact of having Blu-ray alone gives Sony the upper hand once again. Smart move (in the long run) on a development sence. ya they applied what they learned from that war. Anyways More storage capacity=Higher Res models/textures/environments so out of the gates the PS3 has the potential to render at a higher capacity (w/ good programing. Then through in the fact that you have an amazing processor that with once again good programing can process anything in your pipeline...

Ya, Sony's statement about 10+ year cycle. Better fu**ing believe it... you haven't seen nothing yet!

Ben I hope your Xbox never dies. I was on my first Xbox from 2007 until only a few months back actually. I guess I was a lucky one too. But the disc tray decided to shoot out and almost chop my hand off, parts flying everywhere. Well, as of now, I have a PS3 which I got last summer (MGS4 80g bundle), and honestly I can go without paying Microsoft $80 to fix my broken machine.

My problem with the browser is that every time I open it, the pages comes up 2 times the size of the screen, and when I zoom out to get it to fit the page, then the words are so smalll I have to get up & stand almost right up against the screen to read anything.

BTW, I'm having the same problem with tiny text commands in all the games too, I can't read any #$&$%^*&# text commands unless I get up close & personal like, tree-hugging my big 32 inches.

Very interesting question Ben. I'd never even thought about it. I had trouble with DMC4 loading, which I found out was just some weird issue about downloading stuff while you're playing (easy enough to fix), but that's the only issue I can think of.

I do recall having multiple problems playing through Dead Rising though, which is the only game I've played all the way through on a 360. Still loved that game though!

Also, after reading all of these comments, I think a 30% console failure rate for the 360 sounds generous. At that percentage I could see a handful unlucky people going through 3 or 4. Yet it seems like the majority, or at least half, of the 360 owners on here have gone through 3 or 4 (not to mention similar stats with people I know personally). That just doesn't make sense mathematically at a 30% failure rate.

The only game iv had freeze on me was Oblivion. Since i have the 80gb model with the b/c iv had ps2 games freeze on me but thats to be expected I guess.

I hear ya Ben. I can't say much because I don't own a 360, i just hear the stories ...everywhere. Umm.. the only times my ps3 has frozen up on me during gameplay, was more than a few times during Fallout3 (when it first released, so before any patches or w/e) and a couple times in NHL09 when it would try to connect online (so it could be unrelated to the actual build of the ps3) I don't know how people put up with Microsoft and their products. I was finally able to relieve myself of Windows on my pc the other day, and am now using Linux Ubuntu and couldn't be happier! I am finally 100% MS free! woooo

I think its the the good old story of Windows OS versus Linux; though Im, not sure the Sony game OS is linux based. What I do know for certain is that its not Windows. And thats good enough of an explanation for me.

I don't know if it's based on Linux, but the XMB is developed by Q-Games (yes, the PixelJunk people). It may be totally proprietary.

Interestingly, the founder of Q-Games developed STAR FOX and STAR FOX 2 for Nintendo...and STAR FOX COMMAND for the DS.

I'm a computer dummy so I don't know how easy it is to get another OS but I did find this info inside the PS3....

In the main menu, there looks to be a way that they'll allow you to change another OS(or add???, not sure which).

Go to "settings",
scroll down to "System Settings",
scroll down to "Install other OS"
then follow directions for installing OS

BikerSaint - So far, only some Linux distros are available as another OS (mainly YDL - Yellow Dog Linux 6.1). Unless you're a geek (like me), it's not really worth most people to mess around with (especially since you have to reformat the HD to do it).

No Ben you are not the only one experiencing those issues. I'm on my 4th 3fixme and I've had game after game which froze up either in single player mode and online. My PS3 has been rock solid. I too have experienced Socom freeze on me just twice, but since they have finally fixed that game through patch 1.41, the game is finally Socom as it should be and with upcoming patch 1.50, it's gonna be amazing.

I must say I have been very disappointed with the quality of XBox Live now with that new dashboard. Takes a long time to sign into Live now as well as loading up friends lists along with the gamertag pics. Online gaming has become a lag fest no matter which game you play. Disconnects are much more frequent. And downloading dlc and demo's is a lot slower than PSN. And you gotta pay for this mess. What a joke. PSN is a way better performing online experience. I never get kicked from online games. It is a very solid, rewarding experience, so all I gotta say is SONY QUALITY ALL THE WAY!!

My usage of 3fixme is down to a few hours a week if that. It's so discouraging being on there. If all my crapbox equipment craps out, I'm not replacing it anymore. And once my Gold Subscription runs out, thats it for me. I won't be renewing it anymore. Besides, Sony is a much better system, with the better games and online experience. Why do I need Microsoft junk anymore. Besides their first party titles are practically dead.

As for the PS3 browser, I have had no experience of it freezing on me. I have a 15 meg Internet cable service which is really fast. So far the PS3 browser is working solid for me. I'm so happy about owning the PS3. So long XBox.

My brother at one time had a 360 and a PS3 and the 360 froze on him many times. GeoW, GeoW2, ACred, and few others. The only problem he's had with the PS3 was Fallout3 freezing on him, once. And I never had it freeze on me while playing.

I never thought that the 360 was a nextgen machine, more like xbox 1.5.

I had resistance 2 Freeze on me but i think i have a scratch in the disk... It's whenever i go to see who is inside my clan in the clan options screen. W/E not like it's a really important thing to do in it. but it would be nice to see how many people are in my clan...

Seriously? I think Nintendo games are the most reliable. Never had a single problem with the Wii. In fact, I see all these bugs and errors in online videos. I download the updates on the PS3 without knowing what is new about them. My gaming experience never changed.

I have to agree that the PS3 web browser sucks. but i may have had more freezing problems with my PS3 than the lot of you. Mostly during web browser use, but i have had freezing problems in more than a few games, most recently Killzone 2. Its frozen on me a few times, but not so much that it would break the experience. But i do have a launch 60 gig PS3, which may play a factor in this.

Ben, at a guess I'd think freezing could be a result of a nearly fatal GPU flaw, a nearly fatal CPU flaw, or a nearly fatal software flaw. If your game always freezes at the same point(s) it's more than likely software, if your game always freezes after a certain duration of use then I'd be considering a faulty GPU/CPU/MOBO and of course heat...Sorry, but it's that 360 thing, it's just unreliable.

Your article freaks me out Ben. I know the machine is unreliable, but the software is failing too? This I didn't know.

I did read your article about the "grenades in the tree branches" and had a good laugh, but really, what are these developers doing? Do they patch the games? I'm not for patches but it seems to be part of this gen's experience. Are you saying they don't patch these 360 games or that more 360 games need patching than PS3 games?

Once FFXIII comes out...I think we'll see for sure which is the better out of both consoles. Supposedly FFXIII uses nearly 100% of the PS3's power...which I'm going to tell you right now has to be a dead straight lie. But I really want to see how FFXIII runs on the PS3 compared to the Xbox 360.

That'll be the ultimate test. Once that's done...we can all get back to looking forward to God of War III, Gran Turismo 5, and Final Fantasy VERSUS XIII MUHUAHUAHUHAUHAAA!!!!

I've suffered through a few freezes. Twice with Assassins Creed. That game wasn't any good anyway so I'll let that one slide. Unreal Tournament froze up once, and MLB 08 The Show froze up around thirteen times. Other than that I haven't experienced any other problems. So far. <knock on wood>

My PS3 browser has frozen a bunch of times, but that's the only time, tho sometimes in gtaiv in burger shot or cluckin bell, it takes forever for the animations to happen, i think thats a little strange. anyone else have that happen?

i have had 1 360 since launch and have had no troubles ive had more trouble with my ps3. there is only two companys that could make a decent controller and that was microsoft and sega. the ps3 hasnt really done anything to impress me its games quality is questionable i keep going back to the 360 because i just cant fine any real interest in ps3 games.

Umm. Not to the majority here, it doesn't. I've always preferred Sony's controller. Albeit I prefer the PS2 & definately PS1 controller compared to Sony's Sixaxis but it's still better than the rediculous hamburger of the Xbox, their second controller model which justified the hamburger JUST A TAD [but still very uncomfortable], and for some reason I really didn't like the 360 controller feel; I think it was the battery pack that was in the way, the buttons are phat and stubby, and the D-pad sucks cock. You can't just automatically believe that because it's Microsoft or Sega that their controllers automatically be "the best". It opens cracks & leaks your fanboyism.

I bought 360 pro a month ago, been playing Gears Of War I&II like crazy :)...... i really love these games... low graphics (compared to the PS3) 'n many glitches but still great.
I just wish those games were on the PS3 instead!

on resistance 2, i was 1 intel away from getting all of them, but then all my stats were deleted. I lost all my XP, i ranked down by about 3 levels and all my progress on single player was deleted

My old 20GB release PS3 did that... But not in the start it would be on for a little wile so i could search the store but then it would go all wonky and tripy on me :S that was in September and i still hvnt sent it to Sony cuz i don't no there # or there URL. Any help?

Have to be fair here. I've played many a 360 and PS3 title and seen no difference in stability of the software bewteen 360 and PS3. Both consoles offer an awesome gaming expereience.

I have had plenty of problems with 360 hardware..lol! 2 RROD and I limit my 360 time to exclusives or to play with friends who don;t have a PS3 because I'm outside the 3 year warranty and I refuse to pay for a 4th 360. I have lost alot of faith in MS and been very happy with my 60gig PS3.

But if you ask me about when the damn think is working I see no difference in the amount of cashes or other software related things which I belive was the gist of this artical. Hardware no questions PS3 is a vastly superior machine.

i know why the 360 screws up so much its because it conects to microsoft and microsoft can get vireses like a normal computer. my friends 360 got a virus and crashed. the reson ps3 is clean is cause the ps3 conects to the ps network wich is safe from computer viruses unlike the 360.

Like many other posters, My only major freezes accure when I use the web browser. I have had a couple major freezes on GTA when it first came out before the updates. I also had a few freezes accure with Fallout 3, but other then that my PS3 as preformed flawlessly. My 360 on the other hand has had far more freezing events. I own 2 of them 1 from 2006 and 1 less then 6 months old. My 2006 has been to the refurbisher 2 times and my new one is on the starting phase of the freeze after about an hour of play. we all know what will happen next. When it does go I wont repair it I will sell it as is on ebay with the warranty and purchase another PS3.
I really hope Sony will improve on the web browser soon, my suggestion would be a firefox application. I have a 60 gig launch unit and the only problem i had with it is when i got bricked with a software update, Sony fixed it with less then a week turn around. So my overall expierence has been great with Sony. Microsoft's biggest problem is with rushed software and hardware in an attempt to beat others to market, but we the consumer allow it by purchasing it. It is time for us to make a stand, lets take Vista for example it was rushed and now the new Windows 7 is in beta and a much improved product, but it's the same thing as vista just Vista made right.

the only issues i've had with a PS3 game was in mercenaries 2, and It's already infamous for it's bugs so I won't fault the machine for that.

occasionally i'll freeze right before an online burnout paradise race, but i'ts always in a specific spot and I think it's server issues on criterion's part.

Btw, I love GoW2 it is a good game, but for all the effort they put into the Multiplayer aspect...it is seriously flawed! Come on rank 5's vs 30's and 40's?!!? WTF!!!

I'm on my 3rd 360 and it is definitely not just you Ben. I've had all sorts of glitches happen on each of the systems and a lot of freezing. When my warranty runs out I definitely won't bother getting a new one if this one goes.

As far as problems with the ps3 the only I can think of off the top of my head is Final Fantasy 9 freezing up on me.. and I got that game free because it was so scratched up and was going to be thrown out.

I don't own a 360 and everyone knows exactly why. But with the system freezing all the time in a game after certain hours it's the console it's self not so much the software, M$ wants you to think it's the software blame developers ect... but the 360 can only stand so much game play and then BAM its stuck, it over heats way to much due to the power supply also if you have it pluged not directly into the wall and into another power supply it's going to over heat even more. If you leave u're system on even during an arcade game and you play more than 4 hours you can actually hear the fans reving up like a plane taking off it's horrible. My friend finally gave up on his he liked that i could play a game for hours and not one freeze. I do really think it's not so much software as it is hardware. I do think sometimes it can be software if they rush a game but if you think of the games its occuring with it's games everyone plays for a long stretch of time.
Never had issues with my browser on my PS3 either but it depends on you're bandwidth how long you're ethernet cable is or if you're doing wireless if their is anything in the way of the signal also check the NAT that usually has issues if you don't have certain ports open it'll freeze up on you cause it's asking permission but you're router won't allow you.
Just a thought!

so far bot 3 X-360s n a 60gb PS3........had enormous issues wid da 1st 2 360s....tho da newly bot so called jesper 360 iz performin really gud las week playd almost 90 hourz......n no freezin r crashin.......neva had a single prob wid any 1st party ps3 game .....but had crashin experiences wid assassins creed,nfs carbon n fallout3.....n freezin issues wid gta4......

the only problem i ever had with the ps3 is 2 things, the first was that i couldnt get it to update anything (games, firmware, etc.) but i later found out that was my fault because i messed around with something in the settings but i found out what it was and fixed it (Y) and the other one that has been happening to me for over a year now is that my controllers wont connect wirelessly, i have to plug them in before i can disconnect them from the usb, it will stay wireless until i turn the ps3 off and then i have to repeat the plug controller in process all over again, if anyone knows how to fix it PLEASE HELP!!! its bloody ennoying.

ive done both, nothing worked, but i think i know what is wrong, im pretty sure that controller data is corrupted, i checked online and apparently the 1.9 update helped out with it, but didnt help me :( appearently i have to restore the whole system and i just dont feel like putting all my save data on a memorystick, and setting it up for my wireless again... ill just have to live with it :(

Ive never had the browser crash on me one of the only things that do make the PS3 crash is Fallout 3 which was a pretty shoddy port

yah, fallout 3 is really buggy, before the last update everytime someone logged in it would freeze for a bit, etc. and dont get me started on when u shoot an enemy and they fly in the air and fall to their death, but i still really do enjoy that game, even though it is the most glitchy game i have ever played

onetime i turned on my ps3 and it starting makin really loud noises and the vent was blowin air out like crazy. i got my ps3 for christmas so its still kinda new but thats the only problem i have had and it only happened once.

my friend has a 360 and he brought the 360 to his friends house, and halo was still in the 360 and it got all scratched up and broke.Suckes for him! so if u have a 360, take the game out before movin the system.

Im still on my first 360 got it december 07... I never had any problems with Lost Odyssey. I havent had any trouble with Star Ocean Im on planet roak. I do remember glitches in gow3.

@douchebagette - Socom is now a rock solid title since the last update. Go buy it. One of the best 3rd person shooters in existance. Game keeps getting better with every update. 1.50 is coming out soon and it's gonna be the update that finishes off the game practically. Could use some new maps soon tho, but I hear that is on the way as well.. If you're a Socom fan, buy this title. It had a rocky launch, but it has come a long way.

I can't say about the xbox 360 because I don't have one, but I have had all kinds of freezing problems, games locking up completely, graphics going crazy, games not loading and finally the yellow light of death. My ps3 won't even come on when powered up. Just a 600.00 brick If the xbox 360 doesn't have all those kinds of problems, and only has the red ring of death problem, then I would say it is more stable, at least more stable than the ps3 I have.

Like I said I don't have a xbox 360, and I know they are a crappy machine, but I keep hearing everyone here talking about all the xbox 360 owners going through 3 or 4 systems ect... but it seems a very important detail is overlooked. Microsoft is replacing these things for free in most cases because of the 3 year warranty on the red ring of death failure. I just wish Sony would fix my original release 60 gig for free since it is a common problem with the design of these systems.

Sorry Ben, but my Prince of Persia for PS3 froze on me once, and Resistance 2 had TONS of glitches..too numerous that I don't feel like typing them all out. I would agree with you that maybe PS3 has slightly better software because of games like Uncharted and Ratchet that have no glitches from when I played them. But overall, I think this is the generation of glitches, no matter what system you have.

Interesting obserations ben because you'd think with the greater complexity of the cell that ps3 games would be harder to debug. I can only guess that developers take more time, that the debug software for the ps3 is better, or - gulp -that in certain ways the ps3 actually IS easier to develop for properly... ;-)

Took Sony over a year to design, build and test the ps3 (making sure it wouldnt just break).

Microsoft only supposedly only took a few months to do all that Sony did, therefore it was not designed right, therefore 360's break ALL THE TIME. Microsoft doesnt care. They did that so they could have a year lead over the PS3. And its working for them, but 360 owners are starting to realise how bad the quality of the 360 is.

M$ cares more about market share/penetration than money or loyalty. Look at Zune! It's a massive turd, yet M$ just keeps pouring money into it to keep it around. They release new versions of Windows 6-12 months before they're really ready, so why should we think they don't do the same with any other product they make?

And no, I'm not saying the 360 is anywhere NEAR as bad as Vista! :-)

I too am on my 1st 360 I got it September 2006 and my PS3 in October 2007.

I have had my 360 crash on me more times that my PS3. PS3 was once I think and it was GTA4. God knows how many times my 360 has crashed on me.

Gears 1 and 2 were buggy as hell I agree Ben. I use my 360 now for exclusives but spend the majority of time on my PS3.

Well i've had my PS3 for a year and a 1/2 and yesterday the Blu-ray Drive died, it ocassionaly reads a game but reads it very slowly like in Fight Night Round 3, the comentary wasnt loaded and it froze at the end of the round. If Sony doesnt fix this i refuse to pay out for another, ive looked after it fine theres no reason for it to f*** up like this, thats not what i payed £350 for!

meh, i barely watched Blu-ray films, i only have 5, i have around 400 DVDs which so i obviously watch that medium far more often. An Upscaled DVD does the job for me in all honesty. Its just really irritating, im going to uni in a few months so theres no way i can afford another 1.

I don't really know because I can't see the whole text because of the PS3's effed up screensize setting for the browser which could HAVE been improved on.

I've never had any problems with any PS3 game but the Xbox 360 games would sometimes freeze or worse one would freeze constantly at one point of the game of Ninja Gaiden II

The web browser is essentially the same browser as some mobile phones, the PSP and some other mobile devices use (NetFront). I guess since they were already paying a license for PSP use, they decided to use the WAY (inappropriately) underpowered browser on the PS3 as well. I guess we can only wait and hope to see if they put a good browser on the system.

Yup, my same problem, & with no-where/no-how to correct it either.

Page's come up 2 sizes too big for the screen,

And also.... trying to zooming it doesn't work right for getting the text re-sized correctly to my sight either.
Zooming only stops at either end of the either spectrum & isn't adjustable anywhere in between those 2 points.

My only choices are...too big at one & too tiny at the other end, WTF?

First of all, @douchebagguette, let me shake your hand you legend!!!!!

Right then. I obviously don't own a 360, so I can't really comment on the reliability of the software, but I can say that from what I've seen my mates play, and from what VERY little I've played (Rock Band and Gears of War), I havn't noticed any major glitches or bugs. However, saying that, I do know about the hardware reliability and laugh at them all the time. Just the other day my mate walked into school having had the RRoD the night before. Needless to say, we (PS3 owners in my year) laughed at him :)

As for the PS3, from my memory I have only had 3 problems with it, and I've had it since 23rd March 2007 (Europe launch date). 1) Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare froze so many times on the single player campaign I struggles to finish it, but it was fine online. 2) Army of Two froze once or twice at the same point, but after that it was fine. And 3) the console failed altogether, which was my fault. It over heated 'cos i had left it on literally all day and night trying to download an update, and then proceeded to watch a film after.

The Customer Services at Sony have been awesome aswell. I've heard that when all the 360's of people I know break down, they've had to fork out for a new one. When my PS3 went down, not only did Sony pick it up from my house, bring me a new one, and do this all in a week, but it was free of charge all the way!

actually now if your 360 RRoDs you just goto Xbox.com and submit a trouble ticket and they send out the box... you don't even have to talk to any idiots anymore.

Actually.....my PS3 has locked up on me quite a few times (15 +) but i had it since the first day it launched. My 360 also has locked up on me a few time too and i just got it in Dec

As I read all the posts in this one article, I have seen just about every game made for the ps3 listed as having freezing problems and even the web browser freezing. Do you really think that all these different quality games are freezing. I don't believe all these games are having freezing problems, but I do believe that some of them are. It leads me to believe that a lot of the problems are the disk drive on the ps3. I have had all kinds of freezing problems on all different games on my ps3. Also the disk drive wouldn't read disks very often. Games wouldn't even load at times, and eventually it bricked. I don't believe that these problems are the games because it is too many different games for them all to have freezing problems. I believe it is just another problem ps3's have in general. FREEZING UP!!!!!!! I don't have a xbox 360 but if it freezes often too, I suggest that it is a disk drive issue too. Not the games!

The only game that made my ps3 froze was Assassins's Creed. But, after a firmware update was installed on my ps3, my ps3 never froze again. By the way Ben, the last ps3 games that you played doesn't include RE5. I strongly urge you to play that game. I'm on the last 3 chapters of that game and so far, I'm enjoying every moment on playing RE5. The game is just too good that I forgot how crappy the "tank controls" of the game.

Some of you are such hardcore ps3 fanboys that you even have to disagree with objective comments that are both about the xbox 360, and the ps3. Also that makes most of your comments not worth much because they are so bias. I believe some of you are such fanboys that even if the ps3 was a crappier system than the xbox 360, that you would still be all about the ps3. I wonder why when Ben makes objective comments about both systems, which he does sometimes, that most of you jump all over kissing up to him. I have a ps2, and a ps3, and unfortunately my ps3 turned out to be a piece of crap that ended up bricked. I do not have a xbox 360, and I make my comments on both systems objective, and the way I see it. I'm a 56 year old man, and not a young kid or teenager, and I am not a fanboy of either system. Actually I don't really care which one is the best system. Like I said, I don't even own a xbox 360!

Well, then, say hello to a fellow survivor :) . I bought my 360 in March 2007 and it's still working. No RROD, no disc scratches, nothing. But then I've treated my 360 with kid gloves ever since I bought it, as I knew of the reliability issues even then (as reports had started surfacing on the Net - back then the reports were more scathing as 360 owners weren't being defensive of MS against the PS3, esp. as the PS3 wasn't out then).

i have heard horror stories about 3fixme's freezing but like most people here i dont have one so i cant really say anything about a crapbox. now i have only had my ps3 freeze on me three times total and one of those times was because my my wireless router shutdown on me and i was on the ps store. the two other times was on Tomb Raider: Underworld

I got my 360 on release day and have had 1 or 2 freezes and no RROD issues; I count myself pretty lucky given the problems that have plagued it since its release. MS really screwed the pooch with the way they released the machine. I understand the need to get a leg up on the competition by getting their machine out first but thanks shoddy quality assurance, they've lost a ton of respect amongst gamers.
