Activision Schedules Guitar Hero: Smash Hits For June 16

If a band is popular enough and produces enough albums, the next marketing step is usually obvious: release a Greatest Hits compilation. Well, considering that the Guitar Hero franchise is about half-music album anyway, Smash Hits seems perfectly logical.

According to GameSpot, Activision has announced that Guitar Hero: Smash Hits is now set to release on June 16 for the PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, PlayStation 2 and Wii. Initially announced as Modern Hits back in February, this collection features 48 master tracks from four previous Guitar Hero iterations, including Rocks the '80s. The game also "reworks the tunes to accomodate the vocal and drum parts introduced with Guitar Hero: World Tour last year." We'll get the Music Studio, both offline and online multiplayer, 8 new venues, and of course, the best and most popular music we've had in the blockbuster series. They've announced a handful of the tracks that will be in Smash Hits, and so far, that includes Ozzy Osbourne's "Bark at the Moon," Rage Against the Machine's "Killing in the Name," Kansas' "Carry on Wayward Son," Poison's "Nothin' But A Good Time," and Heart's "Barracuda." For the rest of the currently revealed songs and a debut trailer, head on over to GameSpot via the link above. We expect the full track list to arrive some time soon, especially considering the game's launch isn't too far off.

We know you're probably asking: "why would the hardcore GH players buy this; they've probably already got all the games." Well, why do hardcore fans of a particular band buy the Greatest Hits album when they have those songs on albums they already own? That's right, 'cuz all the songs are on the same disc. And besides, in this case, you never got a chance to play something like "Bark at the Moon" on the drums, so there's plenty of reasons to add Smash Hits to your wish list.

there's really no point in getting this one if you don't have the drums or mic.

But why do that when they can charge every body $60 or $110 depending on if you buy the straight game or one with an instrument. But I agree with you Ive been saying the same thing for 3 years now about the Madden franchise they arent really adding anything new just updating rosters and such. With all the DLC released week after week for GH what would these songs or the Metallica songs matter?

I'm definitely going to pick this one up at some point, I still have to get GH Metallica, but I had no idea they would be so expensive just for extra songs and such. Hmmm... I only have GH3 and now the World Tour set, these Smash Hits interest me quite a bit.

Ben it was actually originally GREATEST hits not modern hits, modern hits is a DS title (I know it's bloddy confusing, MODERN hits, GREATEST hits, ON tour, WORLD tour, its stupid really). Just correcting you, but anyway theyre gunna have free bird and ttfaf so Im there, I never had any of the PS2 title so this is great for me.

The thing with playing PS2 guitar hero on the 60 gig PS3 is that the PS3 guitar doesn't work with the PS2 games... When are they going to get that fixed?

Thank god...there are people that understand that this whole Guitar Hero thing is blowing a bit out of proportion. I mean for God's sake all you really need is Guitar Hero 2 and then you're all set on having a good time.

You know I shouldn't have to go through any sh!tty songs anymore the quality of Rock music has declined rapidly with the power of thy Metal rising from the ashes to save us from greedy record companies thus tis why Rock Band & Guitar Hero fail LACK OF GOOD EXCITING MUSIC!!
