Syberia 3 Is Real, But A PS3 Release Is Up To Sony

On April Fool's Day, a press release went out to the press that announced Syberia 3, so of course, everyone just figured it was a prank. But as Emmanuel Olivier, President of Microids, reveals at GamesIndustry.biz, it's the real deal.

It's definitely coming to the PC - that much isn't a joke - but they also have their sights set on the PlayStation 3. The only problem is, it appears that Sony turned up their noses to Microids several years back, when they refused to release Syberia 2 on the PS2 in the U.S. (and also passed on "a dozen other Microids titles"). At the same time, Olivier writes that a multi-platform release of Syberia 3 is essential, which means they really want to strike a deal with Sony to produce this new sequel for the PS3. Olivier cites "exorbitant royalties" demanded by Sony that "seriously hamper the financing ability of independent producers." He goes on to say that Microids has already paid 15 million Euros to Sony in royalties in the past, and unless Sony changes their policies, they can't afford to put Syberia 3 on the PS3. And as he finishes the note:

"SYBERIA 3 on PS3, an April Fool’s? It’s up to SONY!"

Well, we don't see Sony changing its rules for one game, but perhaps if there's enough fan outcry to get this new sequel on the PS3, they can work out some sort of deal. It's not easy out there for smaller developers and publishers, and we can understand how frustrating that can be. Well, we'll have to wait and see what happens...

They're both amazing adventure games. Excellent story lines and unique and interesting puzzles.

To be honest, I don't care. Any software developer crying about royalties is a write-off to me, while Sony takes huge losses on each PS3 sold. I'll take Sony's internal devs over Syberia 3, any day.

Syberia is a point and click adventure/puzzle game with some of the best art direction I've ever seen. They have some of the most vivid locales I've seen in a game. Extremely detailed.

I bought Syberia 2 for the PC from Wal Mart a few years back. I played through about a 1/4 of it then I quit because it was a bit hard and I had other games to catch up on. It was real good though, very interesting story, great characters, and decent voice acting.

It would be awesome if the third game wasn't a click and point adventure, but just an adventure game.

I hope Sony reconsiders, I would really like to see how awesome it would look on the PS3. They used pre-rendered backgrounds in the last game so I wonder if they will use 3-D environments or stick to the pre-rendered.

I played about an hour of Syberia 2 on PS2 and just didn't get it/dig it/care about it and quit, so I won't be fussed if this is a no go. Why don't they take it to MS? They're hurting for titles.

Sony turned down the previous games? Maybe that y I don't know about it.

Give the game to M$. I don't think Sony will miss this title.

IGN rate Syberia 2 an 8.4. They say SOny turned their nose up at them but Microids published the game themselves, so why can't they do this for the PS3?

sony does not need a medicore game like this. Take it to medicore consoles like the wii or the 360.

Stupid comments, what makes the game "medicore"? It's a good game for what it is.

I did some research on these games.. yes, I'm definitely interested. Don't be too quick to bash this one - it could shape up to be an amazing game. Thanks for posting this one Ben - it's cool to find a "Myst-like" game that I've never heard of before.

I hear more devs bi*** about per-disc licensing fees on Xbox 360 than about Sony's fees. This the first time I've even heard one say such a thing...sounds like whining to me! It would probably be a crappy PC-to-PS3 port anyway.

Nothing makes you sound more ignorant than bashing a game you know nothing about.

The Syberia titles are two of the most finely crafted adventure titles in existence. They have vivid imagery, with some of the best art direction you'll ever find, excellent musical scores, first-rate voice acting, a wonderfully endearing storyline, great adventure gameplay, and incredibly atmospheric worlds that you just don't forget.

But who needs that? Give us another generic shooter, eh?

Seems like a lot of people here have their heads so far up Sony's butt that they can't see what a good game is. If it was a Sony game they would say it was a great game even if it sucked. SAD!!!!!!!
