Fallout to Get Movie or TV Series?

 

You know, sitting here with this news of Bethesda submitting a trademark for a television and film adaption of their Fallout franchise, it struck me not as odd, but actually as rather obvious. If Bethesda, or rather, their parent company ZeniMax Media actually go through with this, they could potentially have something huge. How huge? Think about it. What's one of TV's currently most popular shows right now? Lost.

Now imagine a Fallout series about a tiny population that is trying to survive in a post apocalyptic world, with groups and factions competing against each other (or whatever) and you've got yourself a very interesting concept. With a franchise like Fallout, the sky is the limit, there's quite a lot that can be done with this brand, and both a film and a TV series are the ideal formats to really bring that potential out.

Furthermore, it's important to note that ZeniMax isn't just your average corp. that owns a videogame company, it's board of directors includes a cast of very notable people in the entertainment world, such as: producer Jerry Bruckheimer, CBS President and CEO Leslie Moonves, and MGM Chairman and CEO Harry E. Sloan. So if ZeniMax is indeed serious about this venture, they have the ideal means to get it off the ground.

Slapping video game branding on any sort of movie or TV show, especially one geared towards adults, is a recipe for disaster. If ZeniMax simply took the basic Fallout idea and turned it into a TV show I'd be down but I think they would try to pander to the fans of the games and then you just get something that isn't even good enough for direct-to-DVD.

As far as I'm concerned the only way a game-to-movie adaptation will work is if huge concessions are made to morph the story into something else. Games simply don't have enough good plot to make a compelling movie. And then when these concessions are made the fans of the game get up in arms and the movie is still generally hated. I personally love the Resident Evil movies and I think a large part of the reason i do is because they didn't follow the games to the letter. They gave the general ideas a new spin and it worked. IMO

That is true that some things must change to allow for a coherent and enjoyable movie. The big problem is that they just don't seem to know when how much is enough.The Silent Hill movie changed stuff around and added things from later games in order to keep tension, and is why I consider the Silent Hill movie one of the better Game movies, and is actually enjoyable as a stand alone. They lost there meaning the games had though (Pyramid Head). But in the end was how they should do things.

actually, i can see this happen, if they did it, via Jericho style post apocalyptic setting.

i can see this becoming a reaaaaaally cool TV series.

but movie......no thanks.

Yeah I agree I think as a T.V series it might really work but not as a movie...

Especially if Jerry Bruckheimer will be working on it as all his stuff is really good....

Here's hoping that this turns into an HBO series like band of brothers, rome, or generation kill. Because then they could go all the way, both storywise and adult content wise.

Oh please dont..... There really is no need, i can imagine the cast being as poor as the Terminator Series cast, there really is no need.

And anyway we've had films like this before, George Luca's THX 1138 pretty much deals with being in a vault but more in depth, though in THX 1138 you dont really explore outside the 'vault'.

I think they're going to use a movie to setup a series. But I DON'T think this will be a major motion picture, though.

Something like Fallout could be made into a series; but as some of you have said, you would need to morph the game mechanics and characters into a deep story universe. Flesh out the Father/Son antics of the main character etc.

There would have to be some plausible beginning and end. The beginning is not the problem, the ending could be to some degree...

Interesting concept...

Indeed. I have never tuned in as attentively like I did with GNR in Fallout 3.

Music was ok, but it 3-Dog that made it good. His PSA's and more importantly his "recap" of your deeds made for an immersive experience in my book..

Shame after I got the platinum the game ended.

I'd watch it, I love the Fallout universe. But I bet they go with an all new story and just set it in the fallout world. It would be cool if we wound up with something like mad max.

Totally agree with ya WorldEndsWithMe I think a TV show based in the Fallout universe would be great. Imagine the super mutants in full CGI mashing someone to pieces :P. But yeah it could either be based around a rogue traveller (as in the games) or base it around a settlement being attacked by raiders, mutants and mutated animals oh and not forgetting robots! :P.Could even start off with a prologue (if that's what it's called) showing the nuclear bombs going off etc then skip to the future in the vault and take it from there =]

My thought is to just leave video games alone.A video games story and world belongs only in one place that is in a video game is not intended to be any where else.

This could either be good or bad...Movies/ TV series' out of video games is a hit or miss thing...mostly miss though. It would definitely help boost sales of the game though. I just hope they actually put a budget into it. Or that they don't make it as bad as the new Knight Rider series...that would just be sad.

Hey! Look at the Resident Evil movies. There have been what, 3 or 4 of them, and thay have all done well. I liked them! Fallout 3 is a great game, and would make a great movie.

The Resident Evil Films were appalling. The only good Video Game adaption i've seen is Slient Hill, sure its not as good as the games but its still very enjoyable.

Mad Max meets Battlestar Galactica. I mean, wasn't the Galactica kinda like a vault to begin with? Surrounded by danger, human race in peril. Number one though, do not base the movie/series on any of the games. Use ONLY the setting and you'll be golden. I promise.

They might be able to pull off a decent movie if its based on the world of Fallout. Street Fighter, Super Mario, and Mortal Kombat were all character-based adaptations, not general world adaptations. If you look at the Fallout series in general, the common link is the world, not the characters. The wasteland is wide enough and compelling enough to keep fans drooling for ten years. I think they have enough to make a good feature film. As far as a TV series....I doubt it. How many seasons can it last?

The show Jericho reminded me a lot of Fallout. Minus the mutants and all that. Most books and lengthy games should be made into series rather than movies. Movies tend to cut way too much out and leave the fans disappointed.

The Fallout series is pretty great, 1 and 2 were superb. Now 3 was undeniably awesome but buggy, and I mean BUGGY. The stories are relatively good for what they are, but they HAVE to keep the ridiculous amount of brutality and gore, or all hope is lost.

I think it could be cool. And honestly there have been a couple of good games to film. While they weren't earth shattering awesome, they were good:

resident evil 1&2
Silent Hill
Doom
