"Inside Source" Confirms PS3 And PSP Price Cut In "Early June"

We're all hoping for big news at E3 - as we always do - and while we continue to focus on potential software announcements, the biggest unveiling may have to do with a long-awaited PlayStation 3 price cut.

According to a supposed internal source snagged by French website PS3Gen.fr, this "proven" source has unofficially confirmed that both the PS3 and PSP will receive price drops in "early June." Obviously, this would correspond with E3, which is scheduled to run between June 2 and June 4. Although the source didn't reveal the new price for the PS3, it did provide the new price point for the handheld: 169 Euros, down from 189. Of course, even if accurate, this information may only apply to the European/PAL regions, but we find it hard to believe that Sony wouldn't have this pair of price cuts spread worldwide. Additionally, the mystery source confirmed the existence of the much-rumored PSP 2, which should be available for the end of the year. We've already received many pieces of evidence for a new PSP model; either the PSP-4000 or a PSP 2, and that includes the theory that it will be designed to compete with the iPhone. It sounds plausible, but with nothing concrete to solidify the claims, we still can't call it anything but "rumor and speculation." And if you don't already know, Sony's business policy has always been the same: they simply don't comment on rumor and speculation.

We have no idea if these price drops will happen, but we'd like to think they'd be the biggest news of E3. The PS3 really needs that cut and everyone has been clamoring for it to happen; might Sony finally clear the last major hurdle in early June...?

Ugh, you know Ben, I'm sorry, but this is the first person I saw post an article on it, so you're going to receive the brunt of the grief for this one. First and foremost, shut up. Plain and simple. I'm pretty sure Sony, doesn't need anyone...at all...decimating sales figures for them, by yet again dropping 'rumors' of a price cut, just before the launch of a new IP/AAA Title (InFamous). It's ridiculous that the media keeps doing this. And you know what, it happens every single time Sony has a title in the pipeline. Why not show a little professional courtesy to the company that you have a site designed around, rather than spreading rumor and speculation regarding a price cut that Sony to this point has emphatically denied in every way shape or form. You realize all you do, every, single, time you post this kind of piece, is make people second guess whether or not to buy a PS3.

Rant over, and believe me, I was more civil than I felt I should've been.

First of all, if you want us to stick to official news that comes out of press releases we receive, the site will be dead tomorrow. In this new age of Internet journalism, people will have already known for days, if not weeks. Furthermore, if you honestly believe that rumor and speculation aren't an unfortunate and yet necessary part of reporting information to the public, you understand little about the often dark world of journalism.

Secondly, nobody is "second-guessing" buying a PS3 because of a potential price cut based on rumor. Those who do their research are well aware of the long-running rumors and don't give them much attention. Sony isn't suffering due to stories like this; I can promise you that. In short, idealistic yet completely unrealistic views like yours have no place in the world. ...sorry to inform you.

Although I sort of agree with Morne, I still don't feel telling Ben to "Shut up" was necessary.

Again, although I sort of agree with Morne that these articles (which spread like wild fires) always tend to pop up before major exclusive releases (ex: LittleBigPlanet, Resistance 2, Killzone 2, now inFamous) which I'm sure if does any damage to sales at all may be minor; I still appreciate the information provided and the thought process done in the article. Ben clearly stated that this was on a non-US website which may only affect over seas prices.

Morne, had you been more polite with your post I would have given you a thumbs up.

Mornelith; I hear your concerns, but there is always a "nice" way of expressing how you feel about things. Asking Ben to "shut-up" publically is harsh and distorts the very nature of what this site is about... in most cases, a place where people feel comfortable making "reasonable" comments with some intellectuality behind their response.

The rumour mill cannot be stopped... rumourologistics (that word may or may not exist) has been around for 100's if not 1000's of years... ever since moderm humans opened their shameful mouths to communicate. In this case Ben was simply stating what is fact... the fact is that there has been a rumour for the best part of a year that a PSP2 exists... and more importantly... a price cut on the PS3 is very likely...

I don't think these rumours will take too much away from Sony... have to admit though that I am waiting for the new PSP2 rather than purchasing a PSP3000 right now; but I have felt like doing this since I came to the conclusion that a new reworked model would come out sometime; and of course it looks like that assumption will be correct. Hopefully E3 will reveal something substantial.

Saying "Shut up" isn't the best thing to say to a moderator of a website (since they can ban you from the site). But I have to say though, sometimes people need to be told to shut up. It may hurt their feelings first but it will eventually help them to be better in the future. "Shut up" is not really a big deal when someone compares it to other language, like cursing.

In order to avoid negative feedback Ben, you could remind people at the end of the article that this news is only a rumor. You could also state your opinion & possibly inform us that you won't believe the rumor (& that we shouldn't believe it either) until it is written in stone.

I for one appreciate the site for reporting these. I have been waiting for a psp price cut so this rumor gives me good reason to hold a bit of cash until after e3. It's not that I would be buying a psp at the current price if there wasn't the rumor I just simply wouldn't be buying one. If this site was purely news I would probably go somewhere else.

Don't lecture me on a job I've been doing for quite a long time, for a variety of different publications and media sources, and don't act all high and mighty as if nobody's ever heard what you're saying.

It's not just about journalism; it's about a community. People talk. We want people to talk. They LIKE to talk. If you want just the bare news in the game industry, fine. Go to GameSpot. ...oh wait, they run articles all the time about the rumor mill and whether it's legit or bogus. Can't go there. Maybe a "real" magazine like Strategy Informer or Game Informer. ...oh no, wait. Can't do that, either. Entire sections dedicated to rumor. Hmmm...

Know what? Just stick with CNN and stop bothering everyone here. For the record, anyone who posts anything else off-topic that doesn't relate to the subject of the article gets their post deleted.

Okay back to the topic, I still don't buy it, the problem with this source is that he/she also confirms the PSP2, "Additionally, the mystery source confirmed the existence of the much-rumored PSP 2"

With the major push forward in software for the original PSP there is just no way they are going to jump to a new generation handheld just yet. A new model maybe, but not his "confirmed" PSP 2.

If I had waited till now to buy either system I would wait till E3, this is usually when they make announcements of a cut.

I like knowing the rumors since I may buy another psp (wife always has it) and I am waiting to hear about a new model or price cut.

This is the best Playstation news site.

Mornelithe, if you want to critisize a story , you should be a little more subtle with your insults. Rumours are what this industry thrives on , and it's not like Ben wrote this article on a whim .

Ben , you need to be a litle thick skinned about this type of behaviour man . Your the chief editor here and he is just expressing an opinion, although his insults were not warranted, there is no need for you to lose your composure .

Good point on both sides, but in defense of Ben; I understand what it's like. I used to admin a site a long while back and sometimes those personal attacks can hit a sore spot. These sorts of comments can trigger a reaction that can be hard to control.

Ben is justified to defend himself and the integrity of the website, in my opinion.

Rumor like this do in fact prevent ppl from purchasing the ps3 "now".. 3 guys I work with have been saying since December they want a ps3 but they keep reading of price drops. So its is preventing a purchase 3-4 months ago, but not a purchase once there is this price cut.

There will be a sales explosion anyway once a price cut comes along. The 3-4 guys you know are insignificant in totality world wide... just think of it as pent up demand...

It is probably better... NDP numbers will explode after that... PS3 and PSP should be well ahead of the pack overall... finally Nintendo will fall :)

I have a bricked ps3 that I want to replace. I am waiting for a price cut to do it, and yes I may be waiting for a long time, but the rumors of a price cut keeps my hopes up that a price cut will come soon, but the rumor has nothing to do with me waiting. I know that eventually a price cut will come, then I will buy one. Until then I will just play my ps2, and psp, but I do wish a price cut would come soon.

I for one will believe it when I see it but that does not mean I don't want to hear the latest rumors. If these rumors pan out to be true then hey hey more power to them and I may actually buy a PSP. That is not to say I am holding off buying one in case these rumors are true, the fact is if they are true I MIGHT buy one if they are not true I will not buy one. This is because I am interested in buying a PSP just not enough to pay the asking price as of now but the rumor itself is not holding me back.

The rumors won't slow current PS3 sales. There's people that want to wait till the price drops, but the price goes down eventually. So they'll get one eventually. There's also people like me that JUST decided to buy another when the price is right.
$299 is still steep for me. I'll buy my second PS3 when it drops to 199. Maybe in 2-3 years.

In this world called planet Earth, there's almost 140 million PS2 owners, and now there's only 21 million who owns a PS3 out of that 140 million, 100 million of the Ps2 owners(including me) is waiting for the price cut.
And when it do, PS3 will sweep the floor.
Of course it has to be a reasonable price.

There is only one problem...

If Sony has to pay more to build each PS3 than what they sell it for, then why would a price drop be good for PS3 at all? Hardware sales does not determine the future of PS3. What does determine the future for PS3 is the amount of profit that Sony gets. Why on earth would an electronic giant like Sony ever consider making a console line-up just so they could loose money?? If Sony is already loosing money from PS3 right now, then why should they do another price drop on the current PS3 just so they could loose even more money?!

A bare bones PS3 is the only logical way when it comes to hoping for price drops.
