Get $100 Off PS3 With A PS2 Trade-In
Maybe you don't own a PlayStation 3 just yet. We haven't the slightest idea how any serious gamer could ignore the machine that, in our opinion, has all the momentum in the world right now, but we're sure there could be extenuating circumstances. The economy, for example.
So if you haven't yet made the leap to the new generation (it ain't so "new" anymore, either), you may want to take advantage of a great promotion GameStop is currently running. As discovered by Joystiq, if you trade in a PS2 and three games, you get $100 off the price of a new 80GB PS3! Obviously, you'll need the pertinent accessories that come in the box of any PS2; the power cable, AV cables and DualShock 2 controller, and yeah, the PS2 games have to be eligible. By now, though, frequent GameStop customers should be very familiar with the "exclusion list" that always applies to trade-in promotions. And don't complain; it hardly makes sense to let you trade in archaic sports games worth about $.50 apiece in order to receive $100 off a PS3 purchase. Still, the good news is that most PS2 games will be eligible, as they only need to be worth at least $2 in trade for them to count towards this deal. A new PS2 retails for $100, and they're giving you that for your old system (and three almost worthless old games), so this should be pretty attractive. The only downside is that the PS3 no longer offers backwards compatibility for PS2 software...it's a definite caveat, but many gamers - especially the casuals - really don't care.
So anyway, now might be the time to finally put yourselves amongst the ever-growing crowd of proud PS3 owners. Call your local GameStop to see how long they'll be running this promotion, and maybe if the three PS2 games you have selected with qualify.

Here's my situation:
A friend of mine is literally one hundred dollars away from getting a PS3. I have a backwards compatible one, so my PS2 is gathering dust in my gaming drawer. He's got old games to give away, so this all works out completely and smoothly for us! Good deal, good deal!

However, there is something that is interesting here, a used PS2 with 1 working controller and 3 games worth at least $2 a piece? Considering that a brand new PS2 retails at $99, and you can buy cheap used games from the cheap used games bin, why on earth would Gamestop offer this deal? They can't possibly be selling used PS2s for much more than $50 a pop, and they will be very fortunate to get $50 for the three games.
It's interesting though, $100 discount? That makes the price $299, which is precisely what everyone expects Sony to drop the PS3 price to. So is this a case of a promotional discount being a precursor of a real discount?

(And I'm buying a new silver "slim" model, just so my lil chubby can get in a little shelf-time 4-play with his new playstationmate).
FYI.....You do know that if you have the "fatty" model PS2, that it's got more bells & whistles(more ports, USB, ETC, ETC) that the newer "slim" model doesn't have(or has less of)??? (just like a 60 gigger PS3, compared to all the other PS3's too).

It makes no sense that they would go and buy another PS2 console !
I bought the launch 60GB and I'm damn glad it has BC because I find myself playing some of my PS2 games that I never quite finished when I first bought them and since my PS2 died, the BC is really a welcomed feature on my PS3 !
Come on Sony support the people who have supported you and return BC to the PS3 ! Some people actually want BC and they are buying the current PS3 models thinking they will play PS2 games only to find that they do not !
