Bioshock Film "In A Holding Pattern"

We all know that Bioshock 2: Sea of Dreams will be fantastic, and although most of us have our reservations about the movie adaptation, it was good to know that "Pirates of the Caribbean" director Gore Verbinski was at the helm.

But the film has hit a definite snag: as Variety reported over the weekend, Universal Pictures has ordered that Verbinski stop work on the project, due to the ever-growing $160 million budget, which is now being reevaluated. Perhaps the issue is that most video game movies flop and if you dump a huge amount of money into it, it's just that much more cash that gets flushed down the drain. Verbinski only had this to say regarding the situation:

"We were asked by Universal to move the film outside the US to take advantage of a tax credit. We are evaluating whether this is something we want to do. In the meantime, the film is in a holding pattern."

They wanted the movie to come out somewhere close to the third Bioshock installment, but that wasn't going to happen, despite the rush to have the film in theaters by summer 2010. Verbinski even declined to produce a fourth "Pirates" movie to hit that new, strict deadline, but things aren't going as planned. Still, Universal and the accomplished director want to remind everyone that the project isn't canceled; merely delayed. The movie, written by John Logan ("Gladiator," "Star Trek: Nemesis"), will eventually find its way to theaters, so it's only a matter of time. The only question is...how much time?

Yeah movie games are just terrible but this one seemed to have a lot of potential.

A Bioshock movie... could work, because the story is a really good one, and... doesn't seem to be impossible to make into a movie... as long as they don't omit the Big Daddies. :D

The story being a good one is a moot point. How often do movie conversions follow the story from the game?

I agree it should be good if it follows the game but I doubt it will.

This game would make for a very interesting movie! Let's hope it pulls through and they do a hell of a job on it. =)

Historically, I'd agree with most of you about game-to-movie conversions in that they usually suck. But I truly think there's more to work with in the Bioshock game. It's the first game that creeped me out even when nothing particularly scary was going on in-game. The atmosphere, lighting, and music really worked together to raise the hairs on my neck!

If the cast/crew can translate that creep-factor to the big screen, and marry it with solid, believable acting, then they might really have a winner here.

This one is more likely to succeed, imo, than most other adaptations. Given what the writer for the SoTC movie said a while back, my hopes for that one went down the drain. This one has a good director and a good writer behind it, so I'm cautiously optimistic... that is if they can get it back on track.

Yeah that's the problem with game movies, they need less money put into them. If it's just the tax credit then fine, but doing things on the cheap to avoid losing big bucks is one reason so many others sucked.

Uwe Boll is the reason most sucked.

They need to restrict Verbinski's budget. If he has too much money, he does dumb things with it. Pirates 3 comes to mind. He did things just because he could. I'm betting this movie won't make it, and if it does, it will suck.

Well it wouldn't break my heart if this doesn't get made. I watch most of the video-game-to-movie movies but that's because I liked the game its made from.

I didn't care for Bioshock so I don't think I would waste my time with the movie. I am going to see the PoP movie though. Hopefully they do it justice.

I'm hoping for a GOW movie!

If the game's story is good, you gotta stick with it because it will appeal to both fans of the games and those just wanting a good story in a movie.

it couldwork, the directos not a bad choice, though i would still prefert to see Shadow of Memoires (So-Destiny to you Americans), The story for that has huge potential, but i could see them getting a stupid teenage kid like Indy 4's runt and slapping him as Eike.

**Sighs**

With a budget like like the movie will be geared towards the mainstream rather than the gamers.

Would You Kindly not screw this movie up Verbinski? Heh. And as NiteKrawler said concentrate so much on action effects and more on atmosphere and story.
