FFXIII Demo Runs In 720p, Cutscenes Will Display In 1080p
We admit: it's a confusing subject. The concept of high definition and resolutions appears simple on the surface, but once you delve deeper, things get far more complex than you may have initially expected.
Fansite FF-XIII.net reported that the Final Fantasy XIII demo might support native 1080p resolution, although there was the admission that the game rendered in 720p. Well, UK site GameZine has cleared the air: the demo runs at 720p with 2xMSAA, and that's all you need to know. ...no? Well, here's a bit more from the explanation:
"This resolution and its included anti-aliasing, which removes "jaggies" by adding an intermediary shade between polygon edge steps, still results in a very clean image. The quality of the demo's in-game graphics truly show off how great an engine Square Enix has created for the PlayStation 3 game."
Furthermore, even though the game itself will run in 720p, the CGI cutscenes will suport 1080p, which is a "mixed resolution that many games will begin to take up on the PS3." In turn, we have to understand that these max-HD cutscenes will take up the majority of the space on the Blu-Ray disc but also, it begs the question: how will this work on the Xbox 360 version? Well, that's not for us to say. We'll leave the technical stuff to the developers.

(PS3) I say there'll be about 40 of those amazing cutscenes in the game, 500 mb each. so that leaves 25 gigs for the game, and 5 gigs for the piracy data.
(Xbox) Probably compress those cutcenes into 1 dvd. Then the 25 gigs of game will be around 5 dvds. So around 6 dvds for the Xbox. Square-Enix probably be losing money just paying the extra DVD royalties.

This game is gorgeous there's not denying on that, but we are not talking about GoW3 (epic scale, A LOT of enemies on screen, moving titans, awesome effects, extremely high polygon count for kratos model). Hell, we arent even talking about KZ2 with its awesome AI, physics, incredible lightning, high poly models, and awesome animations.
We are talking about just a jrpg, with few things happening on screen at once. It is good to have 2xMSAA, high poly models and nice textures but even so is clear to me that SE is just not pushing the PS3 hardware in any way. Perhaps, they dont know how, perhaps they just dont want to. That job belongs to Sony first party devs.

I actually think they are afraid of the backlash they will get if they do cancel it. This is a company that said that "Exclusive games are a thing of the past". They just have not backed up there word yet.

Also, I think part of the preference (and I have very similar feelings about 'back in the day' versus 'now') stems from the comparison. System A has it on just one disc, so why would I want an allegedly identical version, but with the hassle of changing discs?
