FFXIII Demo Runs In 720p, Cutscenes Will Display In 1080p

We admit: it's a confusing subject. The concept of high definition and resolutions appears simple on the surface, but once you delve deeper, things get far more complex than you may have initially expected.

Fansite FF-XIII.net reported that the Final Fantasy XIII demo might support native 1080p resolution, although there was the admission that the game rendered in 720p. Well, UK site GameZine has cleared the air: the demo runs at 720p with 2xMSAA, and that's all you need to know. ...no? Well, here's a bit more from the explanation:

"This resolution and its included anti-aliasing, which removes "jaggies" by adding an intermediary shade between polygon edge steps, still results in a very clean image. The quality of the demo's in-game graphics truly show off how great an engine Square Enix has created for the PlayStation 3 game."

Furthermore, even though the game itself will run in 720p, the CGI cutscenes will suport 1080p, which is a "mixed resolution that many games will begin to take up on the PS3." In turn, we have to understand that these max-HD cutscenes will take up the majority of the space on the Blu-Ray disc but also, it begs the question: how will this work on the Xbox 360 version? Well, that's not for us to say. We'll leave the technical stuff to the developers.

Most likely they'll compress the Xbox cutscenes to 572p... or whatever the dvd quality is. That's what happened to the PS3 version of GTA IV. It's not that noticable from 720p. It'll just be a bit blurry. The gameplay probably kept at 720p for both versions.

(PS3) I say there'll be about 40 of those amazing cutscenes in the game, 500 mb each. so that leaves 25 gigs for the game, and 5 gigs for the piracy data.

(Xbox) Probably compress those cutcenes into 1 dvd. Then the 25 gigs of game will be around 5 dvds. So around 6 dvds for the Xbox. Square-Enix probably be losing money just paying the extra DVD royalties.

mmm, i bet the 360 version will be about 3 or 4 DVDs, yea they can always downscale the movies and cut back on texture quality, and cut a lot of the extra out entirely. They'll find a way to make it work. either way FF13 is a first day purchase on PS3 for me (I'm done with the disc swapping). either way it will cost SE extra for any game thats more than 2 DVDs. (thus the reason versus is still an exclusive for Playstation, well at least for now)

After all this dev time its pretty lame the game won't run in 1080p but I guess that's SE for ya. Looks like we are gonna get mixed mode games before 1080p is the standard. I expected more from you Final Fantasy.

Same here.

This game is gorgeous there's not denying on that, but we are not talking about GoW3 (epic scale, A LOT of enemies on screen, moving titans, awesome effects, extremely high polygon count for kratos model). Hell, we arent even talking about KZ2 with its awesome AI, physics, incredible lightning, high poly models, and awesome animations.

We are talking about just a jrpg, with few things happening on screen at once. It is good to have 2xMSAA, high poly models and nice textures but even so is clear to me that SE is just not pushing the PS3 hardware in any way. Perhaps, they dont know how, perhaps they just dont want to. That job belongs to Sony first party devs.

Im sure SE did the best they can to develop this game. you gotta remember that this is the first major title for SE to develop for PS3. and unlike most of the other developers, they haven't complained about the PS3 being hard to develop for. on the contrary, they're stating that they're using close to 100% of the PS3's power.

P.S. has anyone downloaded the new map pack for killzone 2? if so how are they?

Last Remnant is not canceled... officially, but we all know what "No comment" means.

I actually think they are afraid of the backlash they will get if they do cancel it. This is a company that said that "Exclusive games are a thing of the past". They just have not backed up there word yet.

They can't possibly received more backlash than they are already so they should come out and say it.It's incredible that all of the other platforms even handhelds have had a game for SE (an exclusive and multi)yet ps3 has received nothing yet.

Well as much as SE may not care they have lost alot of respect from me, and few of the RPG lovers that bought the PS3. I will buy this game to see how well they are making games this generation because I haven't tried any game from them because they all came out for the Xbox 360 which I don't own so I want them to hurry up and release the game already....It's been like 4 years since its freaking Development lol

isn't it more likely that they'd just have a possible two disk install that uncompresses as it installs (common practice) and then run the game off of one or two disks, so in the end the xbox360 user just changes disks once (or in the more likely scenario 2 times)

It is very odd how this generation, I prefer games to be on just one disc, but back in the PlayStation 1 days, I was proud that FFVII, VIII, and IX were all multi-disc games. Strange... isn't it?

It's not that odd, really. In the PS1 days, the best media storage we had was what? 770 MB? Even with the graphics limitations of that time, there's only so much gameplay data that can fit on a single CD. The pride came from knowing you were playing a game that was so in depth that it required more than that limited amount of space. With the amount of storage available on a Blu Ray disc, it's a different story. You can put a long, in depth game on a single disc and still have lots of HD cut scenes, special features, etc.

Also, I think part of the preference (and I have very similar feelings about 'back in the day' versus 'now') stems from the comparison. System A has it on just one disc, so why would I want an allegedly identical version, but with the hassle of changing discs?

I think I would still feel "proud" if they made a game so long and awesome that it took up multiple Blurays... Just, since DVDs are last-gen tech, swapping those feels alot more like "Why is this necessary?" as opposed to "Sweet, this game is long..."

I loved how the old FF games had multiple discs, they always ended after such a dramatic part, it was beautiful.

Yeah that was cool. I wouldn't mind it if a game was so huge that I had to "insert Blu-ray disc #2"

That would be impressive, but probably will never happen.

I guess we saw this coming after that last article. Might as well run the game on 1080p so we get the beautiful fmv and have the upscaled 720p gameplay. Should be great.

Hmmm, wonder how many discs this will be on for the 360 i agree with the majority of you that it can't fit even on 2 discs. Nothing wrong with multiple discs but the price will be iffy for the 360 or they'll make it both cost the same so if they get multiple discs PS3 owners might get screwed and pay the same amount for one disc. We'll see how this plays out.

Back then when FFVII were in 4 cds, you were fine with them. That's because CD's were the largest storage in most families' homes. Now when you have Blu-ray, DVDs are now outdated. Dual Layer blu-rays may seem cool now, until that 400 gig blu-ray comes out, Dual Layers will be obsolete.

roryjhynes had a pretty good question... My T.v also has a "flash" when going from 720-1080 or vise verse... So will that keep happening evrytime a FMV sequence start and end? That could be pretty annoying if you ask me. I hope they have an option on the PS3 to upscale the gameplay sections to 1080p as well so that the whole game runs like that all the time....
