EA Redwood Shores Now Visceral, Emphasizes IP Focus
In an industry fairly saturated with sequels and more entries in established franchises, there's often a general outcry for more IPs. Well, the newly renamed EA Redwood Shores should satisfy your need.
According to GameSpot AU, EA Redwood Shores is now known as Visceral Games, and they plan to focus on intellectual properties. But at the same time, they're not about to dismiss the idea of producing games based on previously established entertainment properties. General Manager Glen Schofield said that "if the right license came along - the right movie, the right book or whatever - we'd do that as well," and he referred to Capcom as a good example of Visceral's current business and creation outlook. He also mentioned that Dead Space has moved 1.4 million copies in total, which is an especially good number given the economic conditions when the title launched late last year. Their next big project is Dante's Inferno, the action game based on Dante Alighieri's timeless novel. Said Schofield:
"Making new IPs is expensive, and at some point, you're going to fail. So we're not just going to be 'The New IP House.' What we want to be is--I look at Capcom and they've been making new IPs and turning them into great franchises. I don't think they buy anything. Street Fighter, Resident Evil, Onimusha--they're all their own IP, and they've turned into major franchises. That's my goal here."
There's no doubt that Dead Space was one of 2008's best experiences and we're all anxiously anticipating the sequel. We also have high hopes for Dante's Inferno, which has been described as similar to God of War...and there's absolutely nothing wrong with that. But above all else, the fact that Visceral will be trying IPs is good news, 'cuz we can always use some new ideas.
