Breaking News: DNF Developer 3D Realms Shuts Down

It's the end of an era and easily the longest-running project that has sparked what we assume is a record number of articles in the past 12 years.

The news first broke at ShackNews a few hours ago: a "very reliable source" who is close to 3D Realms has confirmed that the studio has been shut down. Previously working on the long-awaited Duke Nukem Forever, this unfortunate conclusion has come about due to "funding issues," and all the employees have already been laid off. Initially, it was expected that Apogee, the publisher responsible for the upcoming Duke Nukem Trilogy for the PSP, suffered the same fate, but that's not true. Apogee has just a released a statement saying that what happened to 3D Realms doesn't affect them, and the Deep Silver-developed set of handheld Duke titles remains on track. The first, Duke Nukem: Critical Mass, is still scheduled to launch in September. But as for 3D Realms and DNF...well, that's all she wrote. It was entertaining for quite some time but after a while, everyone had to assume things weren't going as planned. We've often joked about the "so-called existence" of Forever, but we won't be doing that here; we never like to see game studios fail. It's just too bad it had to end before they were able to release what could've been a very cool swan song.

So anyway, it seems you won't be seeing any more headlines with the name "Duke Nukem Forever," and the entire saga has come to a sudden and abrupt end.  Well...unless some brave developer wants to pick it up.  Hey Square-Enix, don't you wanna do Western stuff, now...?

I thought that the development of DNF wouldn't be affected which I read some where.As for the employees I wish they can get new jobs as soon as possible and wish them well.

I've long assumed that 3D Realms used the acronym DNF purposely, since it always made me think of the racing circuit acronym DNF - Did Not Finish.

Lol, well at least now we can rest assured as we continue to make fun of Duke Nukem ForNever that it definitely, will never be released XD I mean come on, the new PSP duke nukems just got at it and theirs actually has a release date, lol, the DNF was most definitely a joke. I don't even think they were working on it to be honest, just trying to see how far they could take it. 12 years was a long time.

It's almost heartbreaking that the last thing with the name Duke Nukem on it was the awful movie.
(I'm not counting handhelds here, obviously.)

Duke Nukem stinks anyways....Way overrated. People have some strange attachment to it, but I remember playing it when it first came out on PC, and I didn't think much of it. So what, it had strippers and he talked like a tough guy, it was nothing ground breaking to me.

Rest in peace 3D Realms, we had some great times back in the day. As for Duke Nukem Forever, I don't think we've seen the end of this hoax. Some studio will "pick it up" and "work on it."

I'm actually a little sad on the inside. Duke Nukem was a classic character with the best lines in video game history. I mean firing a rocket into a room and Duke says "Let god sort them out." That was the best... Even now, so many years later, the characters in 3d shooters just don't comment enough during gameplay. Not for me anyway. It's all grunts and groans.

Ya, Duke was an original shooter and still is today. This is a next gen Duke, we could believe it was going to be way more sophisticated than before.

Hopefully somebody picks up this game and makes it good. This is a potential cash cow, its hard to make a creative shooter or think of one up these days and a quality developer would stand to gain from Dukes Notoriety and also eliminate alot of brainstorming about the general story.

Dunno about 3D, but i played a few Duke Nukem games a long time ago, i remember one being on the N64 i think...it was a fun game even playing against bots in deathmatch. ahead of its time it was.

fml i was hoping dnf was going to be good.
12 years in development, while all the modelling and visual guys are doing their re-modelling, the storyline guys have gotta do something, fine-tuning a 12-year story...
