Ex-3D Realms Member: "We Almost Pulled It Off"

By now, you're probably educated on the Duke Nukem Forever saga, which has been the talk of the town this past week. More interesting tidbits of information continue to show up around the Internet; many of which from ex-3D Realms members.

One of them, Mark Skelton, has already posted up a bunch of high-resolution 3D renders, and in addition, he spoke a bit about his two years at 3D Realms. Perhaps the most interesting part about this mini-revelation is that while we've all known about DNF for well over a decade, Skelton says it was basically a "mess" until maybe three years ago. He writes at ZBrushCentral:

I was at 3drealm almost exactly 2 years. a lot of the staff were under 3 years. I took the job because if any company on the planet needed help finishing a game, 3d realms did, and we ALMOST pulled it off. In 2 years of being there, we were able to take this convoluted mess and make it into a badass game. I wish the world would have seen it to realize how cool and fun it was. The team we had was fantastic. But, no one will ever know..."

He goes on to say he wishes 3D Realms had released more content over the past few years, but they were "just a very private cautious company" and that meant the gaming public and journalists were continually in the dark. Apparently, the team came close to pulling this off - the game may have been ready in another year - but now, there's no way of knowing. Guess we'll have to wait and see what Take-Two plans to do...

It used to be good, back when it was one of the only FPS around. I never thought it was too special. I hope they never make another Duke Nukem game.

Take-Two should just hire a professional company to finish the game(Guerrila or Naughty dog)to finish the game.If the leaked video is legit than the game wouldn't require as much work as if was from scratch.

I'm thinking what started out as a viable game became a hoax/vaporware, and only recently became a game again...

I mean, 12 years? They must have been doing something to create the scans...

I think people need to let go a little here. This game was originally planned for PS1 if I'm correct. Sony is porbably developing the PS4 right now. That's how far ahead of this game we are.

I feel bad for these guys, they obviously have had a (long) hard time taking this game on as a new team from what I gather from this article, and I hope Take Two get it to a dev sharpish so we can FINALLY get this game.

Could of, would of, but didn't.

Game companies go under for reasons. One of those reasons apparently is not making and/or releasing games.

To my knowledge the last game they actually developed was in the late 90s (97 or 98). Then they acted as a publisher for other peoples games.

Yep Shadow Warrior in 1997. But they have produced, and or published, around 12-14 games since then including Max Payne and Prey.

"almost pulled it off" It sounds like they are talking about a big heist or something..

They did pull something off. They managed to make Duke Nukem into the biggest joke of video game history. Which is too bad. Even though the game was cheezy, it was still fun, and the "leaked" video looked cool though unfinished.

When he was climbing on the back of one of the creatures, it kind of reminded me of a FPS version of Prince of Persia or Uncharted. Something tells me that this "joke" isn't over with yet either. Someone else just bought the rights to keep it going. If we're lucky, maybe our grandchildren will be actually get to play the game..lol

My prediction: This game will be set for release on the PS6. But 1 year before it releases, Take-Two closes.
This loop never ends

Take-Two is going to throw DNF in the trash bin out back. What Take-Two WILL do is make a freaking awesome Duke Nukem game. These are the people who made Bioshock. They can make a game for Duke that will blow our minds. They can, and they will... imo.

Hopefully Take-Two or someone else brings Duke back. Until then I guess I'll just have to wait Croteam to finish making Serious Sam 3 and Serious Sam Forever.
