Blu-Ray Proving To Be A Benefit For FFXIII Development

The vast majority of the time, multiplatform games are basically identical across the two power platforms; the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. There are some exceptions of course (and we're not counting the first year where crappy 360-to-PS3 ports were common), but for the most part, there are very minimal differences.

However, when you have a game that's as massive as Final Fantasy XIII, you may encounter a few major obstacles that prevent the two versions from being nigh-on identical. From the time FFXIII was announced for the 360, the naysayers have wondered how Square-Enix will approach the two different formats, and how they'll deal with the greatly reduced storage space on the DVD for the 360. Well, here's yet another example of that issue: according to Crious Gamer, Square-Enix may not include Japanese voices with the 360 version of FFXIII. But PS3 owners don't have to worry. Said Yoshinori Kitase:

"Obviously, when we talk about XIII it’s for PS3 and Xbox – with PS3 being on Blu-ray there would be enough memory, but on Xbox probably not. At the moment we’re thinking of releasing the voice in English only. Are there many people who would like to play with Japanese voices?"

Look, although we don't mind that 360 owners will get this groundbreaking title, we've been saying from the start that in this particular case, the PS3 version will be superior. And almost every time we hear of a new update, it's a "for instance" situation of how Blu-Ray's enhanced storage capacity is allowing development to progress smoothly, while the standard DVD format for the 360 version is causing a few hitches. For the sake of 360 owners, we hope Square-Enix doesn't have to strip anything more away from the production, but at least the developers aren't taking stuff out of the PS3 version just so it can mirror the 360 version. That'd be just...wrong.

Bottom line: Features in PS3 games should not be sacrificed just because there are storage limitations on another console, period.

It's funny because PS3 haters will swear Blu-Ray does nothing for games. Brainwashed, I say, brainwashed! Tekken 6 is also having trouble fitting onto a DVD. Sure one can argue that most of this is due to CG scenes, uncompressed audio, etcetera. But still, imagine a Tekken 6 on 2 discs lol.

Pick Jin Kazama and finish story mode to see "Please insert disc 2".

i watched this interview on the IGN site. I understood that they weren’t going to release the Japanese dialog for either NA version. I was disappointed in this cause i prefer Japanese dialog with subtitles much more then the English voice actors Square uses. I understood this as once again, the PS3 version of a multiplatform game will be limited and content held back because of the 360 version. I pretty pissed about this.

That's pretty much how I took it as well.

"At the moment we’re thinking of releasing the voice in English only. Are there many people who would like to play with Japanese voices?"

These two lines suggest to me that they are considering releaseing in English only for both platforms. Nowhere in that statement does he suggest it will only be for one platform. Furthermore, the last line seems to suggest they don't think many American gamers require the Japanese voiceovers.

But then again, I don't really care. As long as we get good English voiceovers I'm all set.

I agree with you Ben..I hope the lack of Blu-Ray on the 360 only cuts the extra language option in the game... I hope it doesn't affect the overall build of the game (as the PS3 version will suffer cause of the 360...).

Come on SE pull out something special... And keep the PS3 version as it was intended initially (no matter how inferior the 360 one turns out)...

Besides the point... but IGN just reviewed Infamous... 9.2!!!! Seems awesome.

I read that message from another article, too and i was worried. Based on that message, do you think they will release both languages on the blu-ray?

It sounds like "hey dvd are restricting the size of the game, so we making both versions identical, not that many people play with japanese voices anyway"

I'm still hesitating if they would go the extra mile to make their all-time-best-bud, MS look bad.

I am sorry but the way it is worded in his interview is very ambiguous and if you read it a couple of times it sounds like he is saying that they are considering releasing it in NA with English only voicing. And at the very beginning he says "obviously...PS3 and Xbox" so just out of a very skeptical of SE mindset it seems to me that he is saying "Since the DVD memory limitation of Xbox we are going to release English only voice acting in outside of Japan regions because who wants to hear Japanese voices anyway. And besides we have to make the games identical to be fair to both systems."

So let me get this straight...

-PS3 owners now have to wait longer while the game gets ported down to the 360.

-PS3 owners will not get the FF 13 demo with Advent Children, because it wouldn't be "fair" to 360 owners.

-And now PS3 owners will not have a Japanese voice option because there isn't enough space for it on DVD?

... wow this just keeps getting better and better. Thanks M$!

Folks, keep a watchful eye on the non-Japan release of this game and whether the international PS3 version really is the same as the Japanese PS3 version. I have a bad feeling about this.

As for the Japanese voicing, personally I would prefer - yes PREFER - to have the game with the original Japanese voicing and story with English subtitles. Sure I might play the game in English language as well, but unless the English VA is really good, the original actors will do a better job of conveying the emotions of a scene through their voices.

I hope that they include the original Japanese voicing, but I have my doubts.

As many have pointed out this is yet another example of a game's development being compromised by the use of DVD on the 360. Shame on MS for trying to pass of the lie that DVD is good enough for HD games, when quite clearly it is not.

English subtitles would be nice.

Honestly, I see localization as a two pronged job, there needs to be localization of all the menu and message text in the game, as well as subtitles for all voiced dialog. The second prong - the more extensive localization - is the replacement of the voice acting and any modifications to the story needed.

I pretty sure SE meant that neither the PS3 or 360 version in the west will contain a Japanese sound track. Only the Japanese one. Its really not a big deal as far as the audio options go, its just starting to make us wonder when else Square will hold back from the US PS3 version in order to "be fair" to the 360 version. If content or anything gets held back, it will be another example of a PS3 version of a game getting teh shaft in order to accomodate for the 360s failings. Its not the comsumers fault the 360 limits developers. I my self, like many other Sony owners are tired of getting the short end of the stick because of the crapbox.

For some people not having the authentic Japanese voice acting is a huge deal. You might call us anal retentive, elitists, purists, or a whole slew of other things but some of us want authenticity. Some people have expected that since games are coming into the new generation and now are on larger format discs (ps3 games anyway) that we would have more options like original voice acting as well as dubbed English voices. There have been games that do it and one game in particular does it on 360 that I know of off the top of my head and that is Ninja Gaiden 2. It's just that as someone pointed out, playing with the original voices with subs gives you a better feel for the intended emotion.

I only sometimes like english voice-overs, when it's absolutely appropriate like Hellsing for example. Also, in SF4 I put Cammy's voice in english, the rest are Japanese. I loved FF12 voice-overs, especially Balthier in english. But I'm sure some folk would rather hear Japanese. Myself, some english just sounds god-awful and cheesy, and for the most part I prefer Japanese. This option should be available for everyone, because we're going to be split on preferences. If FF13 doesn't contain this feature, I'm sure Versus 13 will give us that option. DVD9 is dirty for gamers, it's proving to be a dead-end for development.

This to me all goes back to what SE said before PS3 was released about wanting to support Sony but they didn't want Sony to be the overwhelming "winner". It was easily the most arrogant thing I heard out of them, it left me scratching my head wondering what that meant for FF games on PS3. Personally, I think Wada-san has lost sight of what has propelled SE to its status; their fans. Nomura is still cool, I'm sure if he was in charge this atrocity would never have happened. I like what Sony has done in spite of SE's decisions; they've made a name for themselves by pumping millions into 1st party games like Killzone 2, etc. I want a new SaGa game, and have yet to see 1. And I don't care what anyone says and how little $$$ that series generates, it doesn't have to garner good reviews either. It's gone ignored this generation probably thanks to SE's new-found attitude that they make or break a console.

Since PS3 did their job in getting the best storage media, I think that they should get the best version of the game possible for ones that go cross-platform. They could even go as far as to pay a little for that in an attempt to draw more people to buy their first PS3.

They quality reductions come as follows: 1) Remove content (like multi-linqualiy) 2) Start splitting the game onto multiple discs for the systems with smaller storage media.

As the years go on, the 360 continues to show its aging and nothing else. Blu-Ray is finally starting to flex its muscles and PSN is now more on par with live. We all know this, so I wouldn't worry too much about the 360 fans as they will always find some reason to trash PS3. The demo thing sucks though, but I might import a copy someday.

Original Japanese voice acting is better than the English dubs. Whenever something gets dubbed to English, it sounds overly corny and cheesy, with few exceptions. I'd probably play through both, and probably enjoy the japanese voice acting better. If you need proof, watch Death Note in japanese, then with the English dubs. Nuff said.

Haha. Yeah, I know I'm buying this. After seeing the demo on IGN, you can't deny it's looking great. I think the wait has got everyone on edge really, if anything.

My friend learned to speak, read, and write in Japanesse in under six mo. on his own with books from the library. He did it cause he was bored most people here seem like they got a reason.

Dude you boosted my confidence lvl up by like...1000%. I've actually always wanted to learn Japanese since...5 years ago - unfortunately my high school doesn't have a class on it - so I guess I'm better off learning myself.

Wait a minute...of course...you're better off learning anything by yourself!

So Jap voices are the only advantage. The 360 version is definitely gonna outsell the PS3 one.

*Sniff* Ack! Is that troll perfume I smell? I always find it amusing how they always end up on a PSX centric website. Look if you buy it for 360, that's fine, but if you manage to make it to disc 7 without RROD, let me hear that epic story. But seriously I don't care if it sells 2 billion copies for 360. I know what version I'm getting. =) Also if you finish the game with 1 360, like I said, I'd say you're some kind of champ! Now quietly go back under your bridge, that's all the fodder I have.

Possibly Japanese voices, but definitely 1 blu ray vs. 10
dvds. I wouldn't buy the scratchbox discs if I were you.

They can talk about fairness when they finally release a PS3 game.

I know this is off the subject of FFXIII, but most people don't seem to realize that blu ray games so far are only single layer. I've read that some places have already pushed blu ray discs up to 200gb storage and possibly beyond with 4 layers and counting.

Quad layer BluRay discs merely require a firmware upgrade, the laser and lenses can cope without modification.

A quick question for everyone. How many BluRay discs have you ever seen scratched? Out of all the game discs I have and movies I haven't had any scratch - ever. Even the two used games we purchase from GameStop are totally pristine. Ever seen a DVD survive even a single playing without a scratch? Me either. Interesting eh?

At the very least FXIII will be the same as the one from Japan. As it takes more effort to reduce the content when you localize it from FXIII jap to US. As FXIII (Jap) doesn't get english voices, FXIII (US) wont get Jap voices., just like MGS4.

The extra voices are just a plus. Think of it like that and your lives will be happier.

Seems to me that based on what Mr Monkeyman Kitase is saying "with PS3 being on Blu-ray there would be enough memory, but on Xbox probably not. At the moment we’re thinking of releasing the voice in English only," is that the option to put the Japanese audio on the PS3 is now in question, NOT the 360 version being in question. He only implies that it's possible to put the JP audio on the PS3, never said it WILL be there. He did say it's pretty much a no go on the XBOX... And in his retarded way of thinking, excludes the FFXIII demo from the BD release of Advent Children... WHY? Because the XBOX360 doesn't have a demo.

So umm... Ben, (no offense) I don't know where you're seeing SE is giving us some "superior" version as you call it, but it seems to me, and the facts are all showing it, Kitase and SE are very much trying to make sure the 360 is in no way left out of ANYTHING the PS3 version will get here.

Perhaps this is taking my beliefs on SE too far, but... No Japanese audio on the PS3 version, no sale. As is, I refuse to pick up Advent Children on BD because of the lack of an FFXIII demo. Already seen the complete version anyway. I have yet to hear news about Last Remnant for the PS3 which was as I recall, rumored to have the JP audio. I'm also refusing to pick up Star Ocean because of a lack of PS3 version without explination. I have both system, I tend to favor my 360, but I will hold SE to their claimed views about multiplatform and worldwide releases... They claimed multiplatform was the new way of business, they claimed their Western fans were important, they once claimed worldwide releases... All of it lies. And I will not tolerate hypocrisy AT ALL, BY ANYONE.

@Highlander,
Funny you should mention about scratchless Bluray discs.

I've almost always bought all my games used & usually in bulk(between 5 to 20), so I've gotten myself into quite the habit of making the guys at the counter show me each & every disc first to make sure they're not too scratched up.

But once I got my PS3 a couple months ago, I've been amazed at every one of the 22 games I bought so far, everyone of them is in mint shape as if they had never been used.

The only drawback I can see now is that I'm going to have to keep catching myself, so I don't have to make the guys waste their time showing me every BD disc anymore, LOL

I know what you mean. That said, I found out last night (ironically enough), that my son has managed to do something I thought was impossible. He has managed to make a small scratch on the copy of Hot Shots Golf he plays. Considering just how robust these discs are, he must have stood on it or something.

We'll have to all wait and see. I always tend to go back to "FFXIII will use 100 percent of the PS3's power". We'll all just have to use our own judgement as to what that means....

All I'm saying is that if they take ANYTHING out just to please the Xbox owners, and just to mke sure they are 100% identical I will be uber P***** off. I don't mind the 360 getting it but we better get what we deserve with a full FFXIII game.

And I can promise you that if the 360 version doesn't come out with multiple disks you can 100% sure we got shafted. Just like with GTA and Fallout.

I bet you the Japanese version will be the best one as it is a PS3 exclusive in Japan. So if all else fails I'll import that one....

50GB vs 27GB( I heard it was 3 DVD so yea).
No excuse for the 360 version being equal or superior.
And by the way, I can finally say this loud and clear.
The voice acting isn't so good in FF and the one that's the worst is probably Yuna's voice that sounded like she's crying 24 hours.
Tidus' voice is ok but I prefer his voice in Ratchet and Clank which was quite good.

If it does go over to MS too, and with multiple discs, all the online retailers better offer 360 owner's "free shipping" so the won't go broke from just having it sent to them.
