Blu-Ray Proving To Be A Benefit For FFXIII Development
The vast majority of the time, multiplatform games are basically identical across the two power platforms; the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. There are some exceptions of course (and we're not counting the first year where crappy 360-to-PS3 ports were common), but for the most part, there are very minimal differences.
However, when you have a game that's as massive as Final Fantasy XIII, you may encounter a few major obstacles that prevent the two versions from being nigh-on identical. From the time FFXIII was announced for the 360, the naysayers have wondered how Square-Enix will approach the two different formats, and how they'll deal with the greatly reduced storage space on the DVD for the 360. Well, here's yet another example of that issue: according to Crious Gamer, Square-Enix may not include Japanese voices with the 360 version of FFXIII. But PS3 owners don't have to worry. Said Yoshinori Kitase:
"Obviously, when we talk about XIII it’s for PS3 and Xbox – with PS3 being on Blu-ray there would be enough memory, but on Xbox probably not. At the moment we’re thinking of releasing the voice in English only. Are there many people who would like to play with Japanese voices?"
Look, although we don't mind that 360 owners will get this groundbreaking title, we've been saying from the start that in this particular case, the PS3 version will be superior. And almost every time we hear of a new update, it's a "for instance" situation of how Blu-Ray's enhanced storage capacity is allowing development to progress smoothly, while the standard DVD format for the 360 version is causing a few hitches. For the sake of 360 owners, we hope Square-Enix doesn't have to strip anything more away from the production, but at least the developers aren't taking stuff out of the PS3 version just so it can mirror the 360 version. That'd be just...wrong.

if your gona make an RPG, stick it to the RPG format, and hey, if it aint broke, dont fix it, go back to the FFX-2 battle system, it was perrrrrrrfect.

These two lines suggest to me that they are considering releaseing in English only for both platforms. Nowhere in that statement does he suggest it will only be for one platform. Furthermore, the last line seems to suggest they don't think many American gamers require the Japanese voiceovers.
But then again, I don't really care. As long as we get good English voiceovers I'm all set.

Come on SE pull out something special... And keep the PS3 version as it was intended initially (no matter how inferior the 360 one turns out)...
Besides the point... but IGN just reviewed Infamous... 9.2!!!! Seems awesome.

It sounds like "hey dvd are restricting the size of the game, so we making both versions identical, not that many people play with japanese voices anyway"
I'm still hesitating if they would go the extra mile to make their all-time-best-bud, MS look bad.

-PS3 owners now have to wait longer while the game gets ported down to the 360.
-PS3 owners will not get the FF 13 demo with Advent Children, because it wouldn't be "fair" to 360 owners.
-And now PS3 owners will not have a Japanese voice option because there isn't enough space for it on DVD?
... wow this just keeps getting better and better. Thanks M$!

As for the Japanese voicing, personally I would prefer - yes PREFER - to have the game with the original Japanese voicing and story with English subtitles. Sure I might play the game in English language as well, but unless the English VA is really good, the original actors will do a better job of conveying the emotions of a scene through their voices.
I hope that they include the original Japanese voicing, but I have my doubts.
As many have pointed out this is yet another example of a game's development being compromised by the use of DVD on the 360. Shame on MS for trying to pass of the lie that DVD is good enough for HD games, when quite clearly it is not.

I would seriously laugh so hard if they released on multiple discs for PS3 simply because they wanted to be fair to 360 gamers...
Kitase: "We could of fit the game on one bluray, but we wanted to be fair to Western gamers and have both PS3 and 360 fans be required to change discs."

Honestly, I see localization as a two pronged job, there needs to be localization of all the menu and message text in the game, as well as subtitles for all voiced dialog. The second prong - the more extensive localization - is the replacement of the voice acting and any modifications to the story needed.

They quality reductions come as follows: 1) Remove content (like multi-linqualiy) 2) Start splitting the game onto multiple discs for the systems with smaller storage media.

I especially like about the demo not coming on the Blu-ray for Advent Children because it wouldnt be fair to the people that were too ignorant to but a PS3 and still believe the 360 is a superior machine. (Oops fanboy rant sorry.)

As far as things being "unfair" to 360 owners... do the games Fallout 3 and Grand Theft Auto IV ring a bell to anyone? I clearly remember being pissed off about certain DLCs for both games not coming to PS3. Why's that? Cause Microsoft has to buy its support.
Nobody should care about what Microsoft and 360 owners think. They're old news.

A quick question for everyone. How many BluRay discs have you ever seen scratched? Out of all the game discs I have and movies I haven't had any scratch - ever. Even the two used games we purchase from GameStop are totally pristine. Ever seen a DVD survive even a single playing without a scratch? Me either. Interesting eh?

So umm... Ben, (no offense) I don't know where you're seeing SE is giving us some "superior" version as you call it, but it seems to me, and the facts are all showing it, Kitase and SE are very much trying to make sure the 360 is in no way left out of ANYTHING the PS3 version will get here.
Perhaps this is taking my beliefs on SE too far, but... No Japanese audio on the PS3 version, no sale. As is, I refuse to pick up Advent Children on BD because of the lack of an FFXIII demo. Already seen the complete version anyway. I have yet to hear news about Last Remnant for the PS3 which was as I recall, rumored to have the JP audio. I'm also refusing to pick up Star Ocean because of a lack of PS3 version without explination. I have both system, I tend to favor my 360, but I will hold SE to their claimed views about multiplatform and worldwide releases... They claimed multiplatform was the new way of business, they claimed their Western fans were important, they once claimed worldwide releases... All of it lies. And I will not tolerate hypocrisy AT ALL, BY ANYONE.

Funny you should mention about scratchless Bluray discs.
I've almost always bought all my games used & usually in bulk(between 5 to 20), so I've gotten myself into quite the habit of making the guys at the counter show me each & every disc first to make sure they're not too scratched up.
But once I got my PS3 a couple months ago, I've been amazed at every one of the 22 games I bought so far, everyone of them is in mint shape as if they had never been used.
The only drawback I can see now is that I'm going to have to keep catching myself, so I don't have to make the guys waste their time showing me every BD disc anymore, LOL

And I can promise you that if the 360 version doesn't come out with multiple disks you can 100% sure we got shafted. Just like with GTA and Fallout.
I bet you the Japanese version will be the best one as it is a PS3 exclusive in Japan. So if all else fails I'll import that one....

No excuse for the 360 version being equal or superior.
And by the way, I can finally say this loud and clear.
The voice acting isn't so good in FF and the one that's the worst is probably Yuna's voice that sounded like she's crying 24 hours.
Tidus' voice is ok but I prefer his voice in Ratchet and Clank which was quite good.
