Sony To Reveal "Redesigned" PlayStation 3 At E3?

The number of E3 rumors are starting to escalate, and we're starting to wonder if gigantic announcements will be in abundance at the show...

As most of you are aware, a new PSP - quite possible the PSP Go! - will be unveiled during Sony's press conference, but that may not be the end of the new hardware announcements. According to PlayStation LifeStyle, a new iteration of the PlayStation 3 may be headed our way soon. We have no idea what sort of alteration one can expect; as the site says, it may just be new colors like the Matte Silver or the Ceramic White. We're actually expecting that anyway, as the silver and white Dual Shock 3 controllers will soon be arriving at retailers nationwide. But the other possibility is a slimmer, lighter PS3, which is a rumor that has been circulating for quite some time (take a look at the launch PS2 and the current Slim PS2, for instance). It's just that the word "redesign" could mean almost anything so at this point, the imagination's the limit... We don't believe it'll be a whole new model with different features and a bigger hard drive, but you never know; they might introduce one so as to issue a price drop.  That's what we really want.

Well, it's just another bit of speculation that will run wild for the next few weeks. At the very least, it'll keep people talking, right?

I remember reading about a redesigned heatsink that would allow the PS3 to be smaller. Maybe we'll be getting a PS3 - Slim? :-P

i remember a Ps2 deep blue version. It was same size it just had technical upgrades like smoother running components, built in network adapter, and a fan that cooled better but made 80% less noise.

I've been predicting a PS3 slim 2009 ever since last year. That it would come with the pricecut. Although this would be great, but i doubt it. THere has been a new Infamous bundle that is coming out with Infamous release. It is the current PS3 fat, Most likely there won't be a pricecut for a while either. Considering that the bundle releases May 23rd before E3 2009. It makes no sense to announce the new bundle for 399, then shot it down at E3 June 2th to 4th for 299.

Seems like the price is here to stay.

i personally hate it how they do this.

because allllllllll of us launch ps3 owners (while we still smite you all on our backwards compatability =D) are now thinking, wow, now do i get this cool new ps3, and have 2 ps3s, just for the sake of it.

or do we have to miss out on this one?

i do commend MS on the fact that they have only build 3 diff consoles, and they all pretty much depend on what you want in the console, they dont keep continualy making new models and replacing them!!!!

if theres a slim one coming out, i can see it coming with a slall(or large) power brick like the ps2 slim... its the power brick that takes up too much space... if its moved out of the machine, theres a 30% size reduction. plus the chips n stuff being made smaller and smaller over the years, I could see a system redesign coming next year, but this year is highly unlikely

Doubt that they would waste money and resources to make a slim PS3 (at least not yet).New colors sounds more reasonable, maybe a blue one like the one that's always in the right side of the screen.

More colors sounds more plausible than a slim model. I dont think Sony can afford making a slim model quite yet.
I wouldnt mind a white ps3, but my black one works perfectly so i dont need an new one. It would be nice if Sony could replace the shell for us, letting us keep our warranty.

IGN reviewed Infamous already and scored it a 9.2.
Sorry, off topic but I'm really excited about that game.

I would like to see a slim ps3 but then I would loose my bet with my girlfriend; "it will be about 5 years until we see a smaller one."

Does anyone else feel that all of these rumored big announcements are too much at one time? Most people are pretty strapped for cash right now. Very few people are going to be able to afford a new PSP, motion sensing controllers(and games), and a slimmer model PS3. I think that a price drop would be the best announcement for Sony.

Honestly GuernicaReborn, I think it's actually a new Sony strategy at work. Overwhelm the competition with news release, after news release, after news release. Drop hints of huge changes, huge games, huge exclusives that we've not even seen the light of etc.. In my opinion, it keeps the hype ball rolling in Sony's favor, and in the end, it may just end up making those who're buying new hardware, approach the PS3 with a different light.

After all...the most expensive console, should have the most news...at least, that's probably what the average joe thinks.

I'm definitely not against huge games and exclusives, the more the merrier. Hell, I hope every rumored Sony game is at E3 this year, and Sony steals the show with their games alone.

But I think that if all three of those rumors I mentioned are announced, one of them will fail. Most likely motion sensing would fail, because PS3 and PSP aren't going anywhere for a long time.

@ Guernica - I'm a bit more hopeful honestly. Knowing how Sony's developement cycles traditionally run, it's obvious what's happening right now, and it should be equally obvious why the 360 was tremendously busy out of the gates.

With developement on Sony hardware, starting off as a 'learning curve' phase. Most people by now expect a 2-3 year maturity period, before serious game engines that take advantage of how it's built, properly. We're beginning to see allot of that happening now. Tons of exclusives, tons of very interesting an innovative games. And, if history has proven anything, the games/engines are only going to get better and better as time progresses.

As for the motion sensing portion. I don't think it can hurt, and the reason why I say that is because, having played Trials of Topoq for the PS3, via the PSEye, I can tell you that Sony does indeed have some interesting ideas for motion sensing games. Additionally, I'd love to just buy a compilation of all of the Wii's 3rd party games, all on one Blu ray disc. That would be hilarious.

Hmmm...

45nm Cell, 60nm (or 45nm) RSX, better component integration. Smaller BluRay innards leading to a slimline drive? Smaller power supply (45nm Cell and/or RSX need less power)? Smaller/ quieter cooling solution (45nm Cell and/or RSX produce less heat)?

Yes, I do believe that a slimline PS3 is a possibility. I'd hope that they keep some of the basic design reference with the original phat PS3. Whatever they do, the system must keep the power supply inegrated in the system unit, I hate those separate power supplies.

You could probably remove about an inch from the total height (system laying on it's side) and width. They might even shave a little of the depth of the system.

I like their cooling solution, it's very effective and quiet, it should probably remain relatively untouched, but run at a lower speed.

The end result would be a slimline system that would be a couple of pounds lighter and considerably smaller, just as quiet and cooler.

I concur. A major contribution to the PS3's size is the cooling system, and the 45nm cell should have lower power requirements.

I think the PS3 is a very aesthetically pleasing system, but it is big. Bigger than any console Sony has ever made before. Yeah, it seems early for a slim version, but the PS3 needs it more than the PS2 ever did.

45nm cell with a smaller cooling system should also reduce manufacturing costs so it would be sort of natural to introduce it along with a price drop.

Hard drives are cheap. Actually, Sony basically has to keep increasing the hard drive size because at least for the lower end models the manufacturers are phasing out hard drives that small.

Though the 80/160 gig move wasn't that long ago so I think it's a little early to see another increase, but it will happen eventually.

It could be the 20 GIG Silver system for $299 that was rumored
5 months ago.

The 45nm RSX and Cell are suppose to go into production some time in June or July. It is too early for a slimline, usually it takes about 4 to 5 years, following the PSOne and PSTwo pattern.

P.S There is a new Ratchet and Clank Quest for Booty bundle and inFamous bundle, both come with a extra controller, for Europe. Check it out on PSU.

There will definitely be different colored PS3s by the end of this year just in time for the Holidays...I mean why do they have White Dualshock 3's here? Do they really expect us to buy different colored controllers, when we can't even choose a different colored console? They had different colors for the PS2 and PSP...why not PS3? Also...the whole slim idea is a HUGE possibility since PS2 has gone slim...PSP has gone slim...PSX was redesigned to a sort of slimmed down version...and considering the cell processor is smaller than before - PS3 is definitely going to have a slimmed down version. However...a slim version out this year sounds a bit early. I would give it 3 years at max. Actually...I don't know - because the slim PS2 took a while...when the PSP didn't take too long.

Hmm...this E3 will certainly be interesting for sure.

The information that I received was a price cut with a (PS3 Slim) new model released. The price that I was able to find was listed at $300. I don't know if it will be B/C! I saw a picture on the net but it has been pulled off because of copyright infringement. The picture didn't look like the fakes you see on the net. The new model is suppose to be the size of the Blu-ray drive itself. It is suppose to run 60% cooler and be 80% more energy efficient. I don't know if they're going to release the information at E3 though. The Sony guy I talked to said, "Too much information all at one time is never a good thing." I will have to wait like you guys to see what is true?!
