Gran Turismo 5: Prologue Surpasses 3.3 Million Sold

At this point, it's probably inaccurate and even unfair to classify Gran Turismo 5: Prologue as a "demo." Technically, it is a demo for GT5, but it's gotta be the most robust demo in video game history.

And despite the supposed considerable cost, according to Polyphony Digital, Prologue has sold over 3.3 million copies worldwide. Some sources say this breaks down to about 1.8 million in Europe, 730,000 in Europe, 620,000 in Japan and 90,000 in Asia, although we can't confirm these numbers as official. The 3.3 million number comes courtesy of QuadGamer, and we probably shouldn't be surprised given the incredible popularity of this long-running franchise. Prologue is available to purchase on Blu-Ray or in digital form on the PlayStation Store, and if you haven't yet had the pleasure...well, what are you waiting for? If more people play the demo, it's likely that more people will eventually buy Gran Turismo 5, even if it has a steep hill to climb to become the best-selling GT title ever. Gran Turismo 3: A-Spec sold nearly 15 million copies on the PS2, but we do have confidence that GT5 will certainly hit an all new level of realism and authenticity. For all the racing enthusiasts out there, there's really only one viable option for the best in simulated racing, and it has routinely been Gran Turismo. Deal with it, Forza fans.

Now, if you don't mind, we might just pop in Prologue again to see if we can't save up enough credits for that crazy F1 car...could be super hard to amass 1 million, though. Geez.

I think 1.8 million in Europe makes more sense. They are more racing hungry, plus they have more consoles sold than in NA

Wow... I think it's bigger than FXIII selling their demos out in Japan. 3.3 million... this is insane. I know lots of people holding out for the actual game, cause 40 dollars for Prologue, 60 dollar for full game...

they rather save the cash...

I say GT5 at least double that in sales. 6.6 millions I said it here, mark my words....

By the way, in a recent interview, Yamauchi Kazunori talked 'bout how the game will have weather and time of day!

^I've been waiting for that for a long time now. This is so going to make GT5 feel even more dynamic/realistic than ever.

Heard last week that GT5 is officially gonna have night racing, weather effects, and the all important simulated damage effects. It was confirmed by the big man in an interview with vg247. Saw the report on PSU.com. After hearing that i'm itching for this game even more. I can't wait!! Ya for sure so much for Forza competing with GT5. Not gonna even work up a sweat.

I hope they will let the GT5P users to bypass the licence test when GT5 comes out. I will still try to get all gold as usual but I would also like to get some recognition for buying GT5P.
Still haven't got enough credits to buy the F1 car either.
Does anyone have the Citreon concept car? If its any good I may get that instead as its half the price of the F1 car.

Licenses are the most important part of every GT.

Every GT is different(in terms of realism). Meaning that the physics get altered to make them more realistic.

So no, the licenses MUST be required in GT5 since it's a whole new game.

GT5P "races" were pretty much the license tests anyway (in that there was A, B, C class and had to unlock easiest to get to the hardest, plus some were time trails and other challenges).
I don't think the physics will change that much either, it wouldn't be any more different than the change in physics you feel when you try a car for the first time.
And if the physics was significantly different - why would they spend time developing GT5P in the first place?

Answering your question about the GT by Citroen - it's weird. It really isn't comparable to any other car, since it's much more powerful than normal cars, an doesn't stand a chance in a battle with F12008. It's interesting though, since it has no gears, no gasoline engine and easily pulls 300kph about 2 times on the Suzuka circuit.

Hope they show some GT5 at E3 and maybe they'll make a special wheel for it.That only thing that I don't like is that is multiplatform according to them so we'll see how it turns out.

3.3 million purchased what is simply a prologue to a full game, a mere shadow of the full game? 3.3 million. Someone remind me again why GT5 isn't at the top of the "Get it done!" list? So how many will GT5 itself sell? I think it's save to assume at least 3.3 million which when you work it out is $200 million in revenue. With far more PS3s available by the time it launches, GT5 could easily see 4 or more million units sold, that's getting on for a quarter of a billion dollars in revenue generated by a single game.

Where's that "Get it Done!" list?

I'm guessing at least 4 million Highlander, and I'd say that's just the first couple months. This is the pinnacle of the racing Genre. There is no better out there that actually focus' on racing and not making your car into the most gaudy aweful looking pile of crap on the face of the planet.

For people who aren't interested in rice burners, body kits, and coffee can mufflers (which is an extraordinarily large amount of people) this is their baby.

With the new damage model, dynamic weather affects and night-time driving, GT5 is set to be the greatest racing game ever created (Until GT6, that is). Long live Polyphony Digital and Kazunori Yamauchi!!!!

I'll say this though, the reason why it's not on my 'Get it done!' list, is because I don't want this game rushed, I want PD/KY to produce the game they envisioned, and only then, will I want to play it ;)

It remains to be seen whether the damage model aspect of things makes it into the game, and whether it will have an impact on performance or not.

I couldn't care less, I just want the game already, my car tuner personality is itching to get hold of this baby.

This makes me wonder what number GT5 will do. GT5 Prologue had over a million preorders in just Europe so I can only imagine what GT5 will do.

I assume this doesn't include the amount of PSN downloads.

I wouldn't say those 3.3 mil sold represents all the GT fans. One guy where I work is a HUGE fan of GT. Foams at the mouth when he talks about it, but won't buy the prologue. Myself I just suck at GT games so won't spend money on prologue but am still very interested in getting GT5. I don't think these two scenarios are unique. I'd say the GT5 will sell at least three times the amount of prologue.

Yea, I have loved all of the GT games myself but 40 dollars for a demo (no matter how great!) is just too much. Prologue has been out so long as well that I imagine that GT5 itself will be a huge upgrade. I can wait for that. If Sony were to cut the price in half though I might give it a try. I can't wait for GT5 though! I gave Forza 2 a try, but it just isn't the same.

dfoz, you're way off. Its a Demo with a pretty full online that allows for up to 16 people races. By not buying Prologue, you're really only depriving yourself of the greatest racing game ever made, EVEN IF its just a demo.

I play Prologue every night for at least an hour total, i gotta have my fix.

The full game has so much more than Prologue, it's a game that appeals to both the real driving sim crowd as well as arcade racers (assuming that they include the ever popular arcade mode). It appeals to the collector in people considering you can collect hundreds of cars, and the car tuning aspects mean the game has almost limitless replay, especially with online multi-player racing finally in the game now. Adding weather effects, day/night cycle and damage is literally icing on the cake.

I guess that is my issue. I don't play the GT games for multi-player nearly as much as I play for collecting the different cars and quite honestly the gorgeous graphics. I know there is quite a bit involved in prologue, but I can buy a lot of great full games for that same price right now. That is where I have difficulty with the justification.

I bought the Japanese Prologue and American Prologue and i loved both and played both every day, i continue to do so with the American version.

GT5 is just the best because it hits you where it counts, with the absolute best graphics and the greatest handling physics system i've ever seen in a racing game. I love this damn game. I can wait another year for GT, even more if i have to.

Its expected that a full Forza game would sell a bit more, it does have a huge following, and it is good although very different from GT whilst still being a sim. So i would see it selling a bit more but its older as welL.
