More Evidence Of The PS3 Slim?

When pics of a slim PlayStation 3 were supposedly leaked by a Chinese manufacturer, the Internet was in an uproar. Of course, Sony just played dumb and said they "knew nothing" about it, but more evidence has come to light.

According to IGN, "a trustworthy GameStop employee discussed the matter with a Sony merchandising representative." Basically, the employee mentioned the leaked photos that had made such a big splash online and the rep initially responded with surprise, wondering why the pictures had been "released already." But he quickly fixed himself and then dismissed the subject when he realized the screens weren't official, and...well, this is the kind of reaction that just screams "CONFIRMATION." Either that, or the rep acted surprised on purpose just to add more fuel to the fire, and if so, mission accomplished. Look, the bottom line is that the rumor of Sony announcing a "redesigned" PS3 at E3 has been around for a few weeks, and when those Slim PS3 pics dropped, everything became that much more intriguing. Sony wouldn't confirm anything because that's what what they do; they "don't comment on rumor and speculation," which is why contacting Sony on matters such as this is a waste of time. It just won't yield any evidence one way or the other. They don't want to get caught in a situation like this one with the merchandising rep...

Anyway, this certainly doesn't qualify as "official," but it's interesting nonetheless. As we inch ever closer to E3, it seems almost inevitable that the Slim PS3 will see the light of day for the first time at Sony's press conference.

I've been friends with a Gamestop employee (now manager) for over 6 years. He is the ONLY Gamestop employee that I would ever trust. He thinks that all the other guys that work there are douche bags. Guess he's not good at hiring people :)

I'm hoping this is not the real one. SONY have never skimped and made a bad quality product especially with the outer case.

PSP, PS3, DS3 and all their Blu ray players and TV's have a smooth beautiful finishes.

There are many electronics that doesn't look good online, but when in your hands, it'll be super sexy. The ipods nanos look ugly, but once you get your hands on it, you cant let go.

I'm sure Sony wants that PS2 lettering and matte finish to remind consumers that PS3 will be as great as PS2.

I doubt that those are real pics. Look at the PS3 logo. They wouldn't change the logo. They would have to redo the whole Sony website, listen to everybody complain about the ulgy hunk of plastic crap on their entertainment centers, and the slow sales for the "new" PS3. I call bull-hockey on this one. Plan and simple bull-hockey... I'll leave it at that.

They changes the logo with the PS2, originall PS2 was known as Playstation 2, that's the 'logo' that appears when you start a game. The PS2 logo everyone is talking about came into real currency once the PS2 slim started life. But the original Playstation 2 game launch screen remained. I think you and others are too locked into this mindset that Sony wouldn't do this or that, or that the Logo is the same as the PS2 one - it isn't.

In US, Microsoft has been constantly attacking the PS3 verbally in all their conferences. Some of the dumber general public (moms shopping for kids) believes that the PS3 has no games.

I guess the change in logo and image is to start off on a new sheet.

why would sony sink money into a slimline when they still losing $40 on every ps3 sold - which makes me believe that a price drop is still out of the question

Maybe the Sony employee is like us and knows that one day there will be a slim but since Sony's still pushing the fats he reacted with surprise. It's hard to say... poor guy, having to talk to Gamestop like that. I actually feel bad for him, whoever he might be.

I am judging the images based on adding the parts and looking at the somewhat "overall" view that is on the packaging. It's ugly but of course, that is my opinion because I like the way my present PS3s look. As for not using cheap materials, plastic is a cheap material, my friend. ;)

Well, all we have is the report. What if the guy was being sarcastic with his response. Whatever the case, I don't think it'll look like this. It's always possible that hoax pics could sync up with the release of a real console, but man it seems way too early to slim it down. It just isn't Sony's way.

edit: This thing doesn't look like it could be stood on it's side, I think they would definitely make that a standard.

Normally when you slim it down you take away bits and pieces you don't need and use smaller technology. Really if you wanna get down to it, the PS3 we have now is already at bare bones per say, so all that's gonna be different is the size of the chips and if that case looks correct, there might not even be a fan in it...

Actually, you do that first, then you take advantage of technology creep that allows higher degrees of integration of components on fewer packages, as well as die shrinks on major components. The reson that the PS2 slim became so very slim is that DVD drives shrank and the PS2 chipset was integrated to a single chip. Nothing was removed, it was merely shrunk. The original slim did away with physical things like the Network/HDD upgrade bay that the original PS2 had.

The original models with B/C also has the cover that opens for the memory card readers. The later model doesnt have the card readers but PS3 shell did not change. It could only mean that there's empty space in the current models.

I wonder if there will be ANOTHER shrink in model size in the PS3 life cycle. There are just too many potential to cut the fat of the PS3. I don't think Sony got it all right this time around (assuming these are true).

There are also mobo comparison pics, but it looks like the OLD mobo they have in the comparison is the original 60GB PS3 mobo w/ hardware backward compatibility. Even with a smaller mobo, the case looks like it has a larger footprint.

To be that slim, it would likely have an external brick power supply, too.

I still have serious doubts about these pics...if totally fake, they're good fakes, but I would kinda lean more towards them being a prototype than a finalized new model. If it IS a new model, I hope I never have to replace my 60GB (now 250GB) unit w/ one.

You're wrong, you need to go back and review the images and scale provided by the DualShock 3 controller in the product image.

There is a power cord socket on the back, as evidenced by the power cord socket shaped hole on the back of the casing. Besides this 'slim' system looks like it crops about an inch or so from the thickness of the unit, and perhaps an inch or two from the width.

With 45nm Cell and perhaps RSX too - along with a far more recent BD drive mechanism - there should be far less power consumption resulting in a far smaller power supply. There will not be an external power unit if this design is in fact the fuirst iteration of a slim-line PS3.

Why do you say he's wrong just because you see a power connection port on the rear? The Xbox 360 has a power port on the rear and an external power supply. The PS2 Slim has a power port on the rear and an external power supply. Don't be so quick to assume.

In re-looking at the pics, it does appear that the case is a smaller footprint (by about an inch or so width and maybe a bit less depth) and not nearly as drastic a change in height as it originally looked, so it could very well still have an internal PSU.

It still seems odd to me they would abandon the original PlayStation 3 font for a more PS2-looking one. If this is real, I'd really have to see one in person to decide how much I disliked it. :-)

Here's hoping my 60GB model never dies (within the next several years).

Because the port opening that is identified as and matches the location of the power socket is sized for a 3 prong power cord and not a small round DC power cord.

Good grief, there is a whole heck of a lot of denial going around. I hope these things are genuine just to demonstrate why it's so futile to close your mind to possibility.

I think everyone has a different PS2 story. For me, I took great care of my thick PS2 that I had for several years, & it lasted. The only reason that I sold it a few months ago was because I had bought a 60 GB. PS3 a couple years ago, & after I bought it, I never really used my PS2 any more. My PS2 still worked when I sold it too.

upon further inspection of the pics, i guess it really wouldn't be that bad. the pic attached to this article is clearly the bottom case. when put together it looks slightly smaller but similar to the current one. i don't really understand why they would release a slim version this soon though. maybe in another year it would make sense. how can they afford to lower the price when they're compacting the size..? usually goes the other way around in computers.

I didn't think the slim one looked all that bad (from the lo-res pics supplied) but I still wouldn't get one. Not unless my 60GB beast goes for it's final shutdown. Also if you look at when the slimline PS2 was announced (2004 I believe) that was 3 years after it was released. It's now been about 3 years since the PS3 was released so the timing does actually make sense.

PS2 came out in March (Japan) and October (USA) of 2000. Slimline edition came out in Fall of 2004, I believe so over four years later. PS3 came out in November of 2006 in Japan and the US so it's been exactly 2 1/2 years since it was released. Happy birthday PS3? Ha ha.

I love the PS3 for the guts, not for the looks of the outer shell. In fact i thought the PS3 was too thick. It was heavy like a brick.

If the final version looks good, and cheaper, i might get another one. There was a study that the current PS3 cost you about $200 in electricity. If I can cut like $100/ year of electricity, i bet its worth it.

Plus, i think this new PS3 slim is more environmentally friendly, more power efficient and easier to recycle.

I'm sorry to disappoint you, im not a secret CEO of Sony. I mean since Sony has emphasized that PS3 will be 10 years lifespan. If these pictures are true like you said:

The slim will be released on the third birthday of the PS3, so what about the remaining 7 years? You don't think they can introduce ANOTHER smaller PS3 to cut cost even further? Many people on this site agree that the Slim looks ugly.
