Resistance Home Space Tomorrow, In-Game Launching
The dedicated game spaces in PlayStation Home just keep popping up, and the latest goes live tomorrow.
According to the PlayStation Blog, the Resistance 2-themed space will officially open, and visitors can participate in "an awesome turret-style FPS mini-game" as well as check out the "reward items, leaderboards, and full-on game launching support." Oh yes, the latter is now ready to go; a recent R2 game update happily added the capability, but they needed a bit more time before Home launching became possible. You should check in early tomorrow to try the "Four Barrels of Fury" mini-game, and you "will be awarded special virtual goods as you further hone your Chimeran ship blasting skills..." Also, it seems that if you've got the gumption to tackle the Community Managers online and other Insomniac team members, you will get the chance to do so over the next week or so. Lastly, they're designating every Friday night from 6:00 p.m. - 12:00 a.m. "Resistance 2: SRPA Siege" nights. How can you not participate in the fun? Let's not forget that R2's 60-player online capabilities quickly made it an amazing experience, and Insomniac has only added to the quality in the past few months. Entertainment everywhere!
Obviously, there's also another reason to log into Home, too. It almost seems as if you can't ignore it for more than a week; something new shows up and you're forced to go in and check it out. ...don't complain.

I still stand by my original thoughts and feelings about HOME. I feel "HOME" - as a place where I believe you should begin your journey of exploring everything PS3 related - game and non-game services alike - is not nearly integrated enough from the Get Go. I feel elements of HOME should be part of the XMB; it would be nice to switch on your PS3 and log into your virtual apartment; with your AVATAR at the centre of your representation within the PS3 umniverse.
A series of "Minority Report" style virtual menu systems should extend the XMB beyond what it is now... you should have a better movement of menu items, stacking elements in 3D and the like. Think of IPhone type interface/crossed with "Minority Report" type menus... so all elements are translucent 3D; you essentially browse your XMB assets in 3D... A very nice "Matrix" style-type experience.
If Sony wants to go with a Wii mote ripoff, what better way to navigate a 3D XMB type interface with the "magic wand". Or if you have the PS3 eye you could use "data gloves" to do exactly what they were doing in "Minority Report"; PSN type mini games and HOME mini games and applications (in-world) could also use these features in the future. It is all for the taking really.
Whilst I think HOME is improving; if you see what people really want; one feels Sony needs to concentrate on actual HOME features first; bolster up what the application can do. It is good to have new spaces; but I would rather have the ability to stream my music through to my apartment for friends and family to hear, video and pictures etc. I know some of these things are coming; but they should have been available already to us. This is exactly what Sony is doing anyway when they stream video into HOME themselves... so the tech is there; they just haven't given us the tools and options to do this for our apartments yet. Very odd. Maybe it is bandwidth and speed concerns... it is the only thing I can think of.
I am still waiting for COMMUNITY support, with regards to allowing users to develop spaces. Similarly to users developing levels for Little Big Planet, we should have user spaces that win the right (via populate vote) lo live in the HOME umniverse.
Game launching is great, but their needs to be more of it. There seems to be no HOME spaces for the PSN titles yet. Maybe there should be a special place that represents PSN titles. Once in this space, for the PSN titles that support multi-player, players should be able to game launch from within that space too.
Overall, I do hope Sony intergrate more 3rd Party apps; iPhone style along the XMB. Why not have a fully fledged Google Earth application. PS3 would do well to have it.
Also a huge improvement in the browser should be a priority. There are many websites I still struggle to run through PS3 browser; let alone trying to stream anything. Codecs missing and media type incompatibilities kills its true potential...
So many niggly things I feel Sony could do, but they seem to be spread thinly like butter... attacking and/or staving off attack from the competition but missing the point with regards to what users want.
Have they ever set up a public poll for people to vote for what they want? Where is the community driver in all of this? The community is what I believe, in the end, makes a platform. Of course software is the core; but the community support around the platform, enthusiasm for it (which ultimately does help sales to some extent - word of mouth etc) and commercial support combine to make it a success... for the long term anyway...
Some thoughts!
