Metal Gear Solid, Resident Evil Going Digital Download?
We've always said the same thing: if you plan to make PS1 classics available on the PlayStation Network, you had best assemble the classics. The best of the best.
We're not quite there yet, but there's evidence that several true-blue classics will soon be headed to digital download land. It was first rumored by PlayStation LifeStyle last month and now, Examiner.com has found that the ESRB has rated the following titles:
- Metal Gear Solid
- Resident Evil: Director's Cut
- Spec Ops: Covert Assault
- Spec Ops: Ranger Elite
- Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six
Well, what's the point of re-rating age-old video games? As far as we can tell, there's one reason and one reason only. They'd be fantastic additions to the PSN and the best part is, if you were too young for the PS1 classics, you don't have to miss out any longer. Provided you can accept the giant difference in visuals, you'll be in for a very big treat if you've never played stuff like the original MGS before. Just remember...some of us recall a time when those graphics were downright mind-blowing. ;)

But the Japanese store does have a ton more of them, they even have their own section on the main menu called archives, not just a little section under games. They recently released Final Fantasy 7, if that's not a classic I don't know what is.
I guess Sony doesn't profit from the UK/US PS1 games as much...

Back on topic: Old DVD or CD-ROM capacities is why remakes should just be graphical. I don't want it to be too radical like the new Star Trek movie....i don't like the Star Trek series much but I remember watching it what I was younger and the change is ridiculous. I don't want a shooty-shooty RE 1 I want the beautiful director chosen scenes. My favorite is the one in RE1 gamecube remake when you go up the stairs left of the main door...the lighting was amazing.
But I would accept a "Director's Cut" with more story and better graphics instead of a remake...('_-)

anyhow i'm with fatelementality. i currently own 3 copies of the original. when i had a gamecube, i had the twin snakes (can't believe i ever sold it) and if they release it on the psn you can bet i'll be forking some money over for it again. it's a sickness. actually, i have a really bad case. i have more than one copy of every metal gear solid game except for mgs4...

Don't have a PSP yet(later on), but thank goodness I already have all 6 in my PS fatty collection.
And YES, I did say SIX....
there's 2 different versions of Resident Evil: Directors Cut for the first Playstation.....
One version is "non"-Dual Shock & the other one "is" DualShock.

Just for the hell of it, they really ought to bring the PS1 classic version of Doom to PSN as well, that way it really can be said that Doom will run on anything! ;-)
Also, the PS1 launch titles should be released as a special collector's pack.
Here's a link to a retro-review of the PS1 launch titles...

Nice catch on that retro link! THANKS!
After reading it, I went right into my PS1 collection & tried all of them myself, but I had to substitute the StreetFighter one with SF EX plus @ from 1997 since I don't have the one's before it.
I have to argue with their Ridge Racer pick though, as I now find it graphically super dated and I even the Ridge Racer: Revolution two years later in 1997, is looking super ragged too.
But I'll definetly agree with their pick on Raymond, it still looked great today & I think it will look timeless for many moons to come.

Funnily enough I think that a lot of these early games hold up better on the PSP because of the lower resolution screen and simple control scheme. After all the first PS1 controllers were not dual stick controllers, good grief it's not like analogue sticks were on every controller at all.
I anticipate Metal Gear Solid will look pretty good on the PS3 with a big screen, but will be exceptional on the PSP. I remember playing it way back, and those graphics on the PSP screen are not gonna look shabby at all.

One other thing to consider with PS2 games is that the larger games can be 4GB or more in size, so downloading PS2 games can become unwieldy very quickly.

On a side note FF VII takes 1715 mb of memory while MGS is around 700 mb(maybe more can't remember). Good thing I bought a 8 and 16 GB pro duo for my PSP.
