Square-Enix Porting Final Fantasy XI To The PlayStation 3
This may fall into the bizarre "what the deuce?" category, but if it's true, we suppose it will come as good news to MMO fans everywhere. We think...
As noted by Examiner.com, the latest issue of Dengeki PlayStation magazine confirms that Square-Enix will be porting Final Fantasy XI to the PlayStation 3. It originally released for the PS2, Xbox 360 and PC. Now, we have heard that the veteran RPG publisher might reveal three new titles at E3 this year, and while this doesn't exactly qualify as "new," FFXI for the PS3 might very well be one of the announcements. While we can easily recognize the big push to include online multiplayer in just about every last video game on earth these days, porting something like Final Fantasy XI to the PS3 strikes us as being a bit...well, after the fact, so-to-speak. We've got stuff like MAG and The Agency heading our way, so how many people are really going to leap online to take a shot at an old MMO? Then again, we admit to not being very familiar with the whole MMO culture so perhaps we haven't the slightest idea what we're talking about, and that's a distinct possibility. But let's just say this isn't the announcement we want from Square-Enix at E3; we want something bad-ass, like Kingdom Hearts III.
But either way, we'll bring you the news as it happens. It kinda what we do.

I haven't tried, so I'm not sure.
p.s. After reading later comments, I realized that you might not have a backwards-compatible system. I guess I always assume the people here were early-adopters like myself.

I just looked at there site. The PS2, PC, and 360 version are all $12.95 a month. It's pretty safe to assume that the PS3 version would be the same.

i just can't see why they would port this now. does FFXI still have that many people playing it? i doubt they still have the 30+ servers they did back in the day.

Anyway, I hated the game and went to WoW, so this isn't good news at all if this is going to be one of the "big" announcements at E3. Personally, I'd love to see the first MMORPG on the PS3 be the secret next-gen project that Blizzard is working on but I'm pretty sure that's just a "final" fantasy...sorry for the pun...I know it sucked. :)

Why?
Why distract your resources by porting FFXI when your new games are slipping?
Oh and releasing FFVII and FFVIII on PSN globally couldn't hurt anyone. Nor could doing a reworking of FFVII on the PS3. I mean, crap. As 'darxed' says, if you're going to spend time porting an older game onto the PS3, what better candidate is there than FFVII (FFVIII wouldn;t hurt either...)

If they think for one minute that I'm going to fork out 50 bux for a game that came out ages ago and then pay them another 130 to play it for ONE year, they are sadly, SADLY mistaken.
Oh, and explain to me how this game would have the mandatory trophies. Or does MMOs not qualify for that?
