Metal Gear Solid: Rising Announced For PS3, Xbox 360

Okay, so most of you already know about it already, but it certainly deserves a story. Hell, it's super crazy huge news!

Unveiled at Microsoft's E3 press conference, Hideo Kojima's new game is - wait for it - wait a little longer... Okay, here it is: Metal Gear Solid: Rising. Although it was initially unveiled at Microsoft's conference, it most certainly is coming to both the PlayStation 3 and 360, so all you PS3 fans needn't go run into a cave and hide from all the 360 loyalists who have been pining for a MGS exclusive. But, they are going to get the MGS franchise as many expected; in this new generation, there's almost no such thing as exclusivity amongst third-party developers. The cost of creating games is just too high, and with a combined user base of over 50 million for both consoles in question, what business guru is gonna say, "meh, we don't need half of 'em." Of course, the PS3 side will claim that something like Rising won't be as amazing as it could've been had Konami and Kojima simply stuck with Sony's more capable machine. But hey, c'mon...look who we're talking about. The game will rule, plain and simple.

As for the game itself, it will star Raiden as the main character; Mr. Snake won't be around, which makes sense, considering his departure in last year's Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots. Arnold says you can expect a straight-up action title along the lines of Devil May Cry, with little to no stealth elements. They're calling it "Lightning Bolt Action" rather than "Stealth Espionage Action," so that's a good indication right there. So anywho, we'll certainly place this on our "must see more of!" radar and whenever new information and details arise, we'll tell ya all about it.

I'm just curious how you came upon the knowledge that this is a Multi-Plat game. When it was revealed at the Microsoft presser, it was revealed in the EXCLUSIVE to 360 portion. I hope it is coming to the PS3, but I was under the impression that it was a 360 exclusive. If this is true, Microsoft's Presser grade comes down just a bit in my eyes.

what im worried about is whats going to be sacraficed because of this. Just as poeple were saying that MGS4 on 360 would have to be multi disc i just wonder, would they do that or would they make the game short or stunted compared to MGS4? Short game? Multi Disc? Lower graphics?

I don't understand why this bothers people. Just but it on the PS3 since you prefer PS3 or vice-versa. This is good news because the more people but the game the more chance we will have more MGS games made well into the future.

I really though the 360 version would be called: Metal Gear Solid: Substandard... sorry I couldn't resist.

I'm not going to lie, I would rather it stay exclusive. With Kojima's countdown ending at M$'s E3 show, we all knew it was coming. As long as it comes to the PS3 I'm happy.

The series might just go downhill from here

Hopefully it's just a forgotten game in the franchise and MGS6 comes back to greatness

At least they're not getting Kojima's masterpiece(MGS4)

I consider this new MGS a spinoff, just like GTA: Vice City Stories

This is bulls**t. If the cost is so high then Sony should have made sure Kojima had the resources. I'm not going to say it won't be as good as it could be but I will say it won't be better the MGS4. Deep down I had a feeling this was going to happen. It's just a shame to see my favorite developers from my younger years(Crapcom, SqueEnix and know Konami)all sell out to M$ in two years. With that said I'll add another "meh" to the mix and go finish watching Dragonball Z season 9.

Dude, relax, by doing this Konami has double the potential market. They'd have to be nuts not to try an MGS game on the 360. If it's a flop on 360 and the PS3 will likely make up for it - and we'll likely never see another 360 MGS game without commercial success on on the 360. As much as people still want to look at the 360 and Ps3 owner as the same, they are not, the tastes of the gamers on 360 and PS3 are different. PS3 owners are on average more friendly to Japanese developers and JRPGs. MGS isn't a JRPG, but it shares some narrative techniques with those games such as being heavily story driven and full of cut scenes. Such games have a slower pace than most Western games of similar genre. Again, PS3 (and PS2) owners are on average more friendly to this sort of thing than an average Xbox/Xbox360 owner. that's not a dig at anyone, it's simply true.

TheHighlander; he could have gone the PC PS3 route; instead of handing this over to our greatest of competitors... or better still, a mario-style version for the Wii; just to make the 360 crowd even more dissappointed... ultimately you don't give away your most prized I.P. franchise just like that...

Does this means GT5 will follow suite in the future?

I have no problem with the game being multi, but it will in no way compare to MGS4.I laugh at the 360 fanboys though who act like this hurts Sony when it's multi and once again MS announces a multi game as their big E3 reveal. As I said before, the PS3 is the only console that constantly announces exclusive games as their major titles year after year.

Konami took a look at the sales figures on MGS4 and told Microsoft how many zeros they needed for Xbox 360 Exclusivity, once Microsoft stopped laughing nervously at the number of zeros, they started talking about having Kojima on-stage at E3 to announce the game, and scripting it so it seems like an exclusive....At least for a moment or two in this Internet driven world.

That sounds about right, with the exception of the nervous laughter... Remember, it is Microsoft; a company that can lose a billion dollars and not blink...

The number of zeros I'm thinking of here represent more than 10% of the RROD write off MS was forced to put aside. In anyone's money, that's a lot of coin. With the really agressive pricing that Microsoft is using, the hardware can't really be that profitable for them. So they are eeking out a profit on games. If you do the accounting right and don't put the game exclusivity slush fund in the same accounting lines as the profits from games, it makes the games division seem profitable. But, the exclusivity deals - sorry I should call them by the correct name "Cross Marketing Partnerships" - come off the bottom line somewhere even if a different division is the one making the payout. Microsoft is not as flush with cash as it once was, the recession has bitten them hard too. A "cross Marketing Partnership" or whatever you call it has to show a return on the investment or it's simply a loss on the balance sheet, and shareholders do not appreciate those.

I'm not saying they would throw a billion dollars at any company for an exclusive game. If they wanted the title badly enough, they'd buy out the company instead of paying for an exclusive. (This did happen with Bungie for Halo many years ago; Halo was supposed to be multi-platform originally.)

I personally think that they encouraged Konami to pursue multi-platform development, whether it be through a slush fund or some other means when they knew Konami's eyes were already wandering. I think that was evidenced by MGO not being tightly bound to the PlayStation Network, by using PSN IDs, the wallet, and doing DLC via the PS Store. Now, with the latest "expansion" MGO can indeed use the PS wallet, but it's still not tightly bound to any of the normal PSN facilities. Like I mentioned in an earlier comment on this story, that makes me believe that they were exploring MGO for the 360 but either abandoned or put it on the back burner for the next MGS game (MGS:Rising as it turns out).

@Scare - Your idea about the MGSunny was horrible by the way. You think the genius that is Kojima needs your thoughts on what direction he should take his game? I think not. I don't even think Konami can tell Kojima in what direction he should take his game.

Anyway, I can't wait to play as Raiden. I really wanted to be able to use him with the MGS4 engine though, not in some DMC type of game.

And before anyone says it, I refuse to play MGO. The whole Konami ID thing is terrible and I do not want to buy an expansion just to play as Raiden every once in a blue moon when it picks me to play as him.

That's exactly why it was called Metal Gear Solid. Because of the 3D graphics. Snake had nothing to do with it. If that were the case it would've been called that in the NES days as well.

It's probably going to be a lot smaller because the graphics will be different, the environments wont be so big, and the dialogue will not be as long as MGS4. The game istself will probably be a lot shorter.

What they'll probably do is have a multi-disk mandatory install on the 360, since MS added optional game installations back in November as part of the NXE upgrade. Graphics won't be on par, and I doubt it'll run any where as smoothly as on the PS3, but just because the 360 doesn't have a Blu-Ray drive doesn't mean you can't get a huge game on it.

IF the PS3 is also getting MGS:Rising (I'm not assuming it will, but I'm not assuming that the PS3 won't get another MGS title altogether either), I would expect that they'll do primary development on the PS3 and scale back the graphics quality, engine complexity, and AI for the 360 version. Not so much as a port, but as something fine tuned for each platform.

On the other hand, maybe they'll just do a similar but unrelated game for the PS3...

It only confirms my theory about Metal Gear Online (which shipped with MGS4 last year): MGO wasn't tightly integrated into PSN because Konami & Kojima were likely exploring making MGO for the 360. They couldn't have pulled off MGS4 on the 360 due to the sheer size of the game, but MGO is relatively small. By leaving it network independent, it would be easier to port to the 360.

Now I know that there haven't been any announcements of that for the 360, and who knows what's being cooked up with MGS:Rising, but I think it's likely that MGO will be updated for MGS:Rising, and we'll see multi-platform, network independent fps combat before all is said and done.

its not impossible if an optimized and miniaturized version of the MSG4 engine shipped on disc with all the assets for MGO.

Its also possible that the MGS4 engine is versatile enough to take a total shift of paradigm into "lightning bolt action", in which case both MGS:R and MGO are running on the MGS4 engine.

and again, its possible that a modified MGO designed for use on the MGS:R engine will ship with the game.

so there, three possibilities. =D

I hope Arnold is wrong, why would I wanna flip around with Raiden in some action title when I could be doing what MGS was made for? This title sounds stupid and I agree with Kojima, I don't like this direction. Should appeal to 360 twitchers though.

AS others have said, I won't be mad unless we hear "We have had to cut somethings cause we want both versions to be exactly the same" sounds familiar who esle said that... Anyway as long as the PS3 version can remain similar to MGS4 with all the extras even if it means not giving them to the 360 I'll be happy. Though I don't know if I like the direction the game is going. I love the stealth part and if this really is like DMC I probably won't pick it up cause I just don't like those types of games.

MGS game without stealth!? Well as long as Kojima's involved in some capacity I'm sure he won't let it be horrible. I'd much prefer to have the standard game on the 360 and PS3, and then maybe a "director's cut" of some kind exclusive for the PS3.

If this MGS isn't stealth at all...why THE FU** WOULD I GIVE A DAMN. And no - I'm not saying that because it's for 360 as well...I'm saying that as a BIG MGS: "TACTICAL ESPIONAGE ACTION" FAN.

Anyway...you guys gotta admit there was some style when Kojima walked on.

I love how that bi*** named Tom just kept asking the audience "OMG what is the game you've always wanted on our console?"

"!" *with sound effect*

Kojima-san walks on stage smiling.

That made me lol. I'm just glad they didn't announce MGS 4 for the Xbox 360. If it's just a new MGS...I'm cool with it.

If he announces MGS 4 for the 360...Kojima is contradicting himself to the fullest after all his complains with Blu Ray not having enough space for him and all.

I agree with Hiphop. If you don't want all that pressure on your shoulders, Go buy a 360 and then you can enjoy the best both worlds offer you and not take offence about everything that happens to your one favorite machine.

Hey go get the Elite. You know you are gonna have to buy that one if you want a hard drive and 2 free games. It's only 400 dollars and if you want wireless you will have to spend 100 dollars making it a 500 dollar investment. And that is not including the 50 you gotta drop for Live.

And then all I hear from Ben and everyone else complaining that the PS3 needs a price cut. Lol's 400 bucks for the PS3 is a steal for what you get. No price cut needed nor should even be considered. 80% of the 360 consumers are buying the Elite bundles and you don't hear them complaining about the 400 dollar price tag.

They knowingly shipped defective equipment in order to get a jump on the market and didn't do anything about it until they were face with lawsuits. I refuse to support a company that smears the competition so it can monopolize a certain industry. It doesn't try to win market share by make products people want. It does it by slandering the competition and using most and influence to distort the market. I especially won't support a company that uses a toad like Aaron Greenburg as there PR person. A Metal Gear Solid game that doesn't focus on stealth? The very thing that established the Metal Gear series to begin with? Sorry but to me this just sounds like Kojima is making a quick-paced action game to appeal to the trigger happy Xbox fans. I'm not saying there's anything wrong with this perspective in games, it just ain't one I'd associate with Metal Gear.

If I wanted a fighting action orientated game I'd go out and buy one from the huge selection of generic titles already out there.

When Kojima said he wanted his next game to appeal to the "western gamers" more I sort of knew he meant taking it to the Xbox.... Well actually I don't have a problem with that cause it will be pretty interesting to see how much Kojima will squeeze out of the 360. I mean come on, he is a perfectionist so he'll make that game look, sound and play perfectly. He might even squeeze some life back into the 360...

I doubt it will be an exclusive to the 360 thou, cause then his game is only a western game as Japan doesn't really have 360.... the consumers there doesn't support it.... On the other hand will they all of a sudden start buying the Xbox in order to play it if it is an exclusive? Especially if MS drop the price of the Xbox again? ......mmmmm..... Makes me wonder.....

Anyway like I said I like Kojima and I respect him for what he has done over the years. And if for some reason this is an exclusive to the Xbox then fine. I'm not going to hate him and promise to never by his stuff again that is just typical fanboy bullsh*t.... But I'm not going to run out and by a Xbox either....

MS has been quite for far too long and I knew they had some stuff up their sleeve... I bet they have some more nasty surprises for us...

BUT the one thing that is going to P**** me off and get under my skin is the ripple effect that's about to follow on every other Forum, blog and pro 360 sites about how we (the PS3) are screwed and how the PSĀ£ is dead and this and that and this and that.... THAT is what bothers me.... Sad that this is all they need to get all fired up again.

Anyway I will be looking forward to Kojima's next PS3 project..... Until then I'll get G.O.W 3,Uncharted 2, GT5, R&C: Crack in Time...etc etc .... Oh and I'd like to find out what Epic's new PS3 exclusive will be as well... So the 360 fanboy's should celebrate too hard for too long.....

I don't see why people are so bothered by this, it's just a spin off, not the actual mgs5, they did this because so many people wanted to use raidens katana in the actual game, mgs5 is going to be confirmed soon and it will be a ps3 exclusive, this is just so the xbots can't complain anymore, hence the big boss picture for mgs5, but what I would like to know is if it will have mgo and will we be able to play xbots? Oh that would be fun, we all understand it way better then they do and should be able to kick their asses, then again, most xbots have no life and wouldn't stop starting arguments, this could be a real problem

Should be interesting how this spin off plays. Should be like Devil May Cry which makes sense, the cyborg ninjas through out the series have been known to jump in head first into battles not giving a f***. It's funny how PS3 owners through out the internet are now saying that Raiden is gay. It sucks it's not exclusive to us anymore but at least it's not exclusive to M$ either. I'm well aware of the hate for Raiden in MGS:2, I was one of them but after how bad ass he was in MGS 4 he was approved by the majority of the fans. With him becoming the new cyborg ninja, he was accepted by everybody. My point is that if this game remained a PS3 exclusive, Raiden wouldn't be receiving all this hate from everybody. I think it's great that they're branching out the story. The stealth action might be gone for this game but I'm sure Kojima would not allow his baby to be like Devil May Cry 2. If stealth is what you want just wait 4 more years for MGS 5.

this really sounds like last year with FF,just get over it.if the game manages the same quality of the last, what more can you ask.
and nobody knows how this game will handle.

MGS4 = tactical espionage action.
MGSR = lightning bolt action.
to me sounds like a whole new genre, but what do i kno.

Wow I never seen so many fanboys before this is getting out of hand

People Kojima had nothing to do with MGSR going to 360 it was all Konami, If you are a true fan of the MGS series please support this game I'm willing to give a go, it's not like it's not coming to PS3, chill out folks

i have no interest in this.

i keep saying the one trick pony needs to do something none mgs!

im not bothered about the 360 news as im not a "fanboy" but please, Kojima, do something new!

Im a huge MGS fan but "lightning bolt action".....sorry, but thats classic comedy. Its like south park taking the piss out of a Michael Bay film trailer.

Ben, this game was revealed in the 360 exclusive part of Microsoft's conference. There has been no mention of how much snake will appear in the game afaik and although i beleive that it probably will be a hack and slash game, there is no evidence to support this.

I'm not saying anyone's lying about any of this, but if your going to post an article like this, you need to give a source or tell us how this information came about, not just "Arnold said so"

Like that other guy said,

"I'm just curious how you came upon the knowledge that this is a Multi-Plat game. When it was revealed at the Microsoft presser, it was revealed in the EXCLUSIVE to 360 portion. I hope it is coming to the PS3, but I was under the impression that it was a 360 exclusive. If this is true, Microsoft's Presser grade comes down just a bit in my eyes."

Well if they asked the guy from Microsoft then thats cool. Yeah i know about the chart but its not concrete evidence, it could be a mistype, also that doesn't show anything about action or solid snake, though there might be a teaser trailer that i haven't seen

I'm sure Microsoft would make sure to put MGS on the exclusive part of the list if it was.

They included it in the exclusive part of the show because they wanted everyone to think (even for a day) that it was.

First of all, I wasn't stating facts; I was merely stating what we think it will be. That much was obvious.

Secondly, there's no chance on God's green earth that Konami's exhibitor list has "mistypes." It's coming to the PS3.

Didn't Kojima say he wouldn't personally be involved in another MGS title? If so, it could be something outsourced to a smaller (maybe crappy) studio. It's always sounded to me like he wanted to go off into a new IP (maybe still Sony-exclusive...for a while).

This to me is no longer MGS, which is a sad thing to say. If it isn't the stealth, sneaking and actually having to put more than 3 seconds thought into what to do next in the game then it isn't MGS.

In my eyes MGS4 is now the last in the series and this is a new thing entirely. If I wanted a fast paced hack n slash then I'd play Ninja Gaiden or DMC - not MGS.

If Kojima isn't involved either we won't see the level of perfectionism that we saw with previous MGS titles - correct me if I'm wrong but didn't Koj say he wasn't happy with the level of quality in MGS4? Who else in this industry has that sort of drive and level of perfectionism to actually say that; what is in my eyes the best game of this generation so far, is substandard and could be improved?

To me MGS is over - this is a new series entirely.

MGS hasn't gone multiplatform - MGS died in childbirth.

Hey Ben confused,

When watching the press conference M$ said everything after FF13 is now on the exclusive list and MGS Raiden was in that area of the conference? just a little confused thats all.

It would be cool if it was Multi-platform but we'll see the sony conference is today, getting excited, first i'm going to watch Nintendo kinda curious what they have up their sleeves ;) I also agree with Nick42 i believe this to be a whole new series as well.

WOW! now apparently the xbox is the best system because they have every game and now nothing is in there way...sigh, first i didnt think this was that bad but after i heard that, ooh now im PO'd, but the only thing that was really new/amazing in the xbox press conference was that 3D vertual thingy that looked way better then the playstation eye, i actually sh** my pants when i saw that, i know sony will own house at E3 but that last thing they announced was mighty impresive, im glad i didnt trade in my xbox, that looks pretty siq, but not as siq as my ps3 :P

For those of you crying what's next, GT or GOW going multiplat, you needn't worry because those games will always remain exclusive since they are Sony-owned IPs.

I've written this before and I'll write it again, Sony's greatest asset is its second- and first-part developers. This is a long way away from when Sony's internal developers were a joke in the early days of the PSX.

What Sony needs to do is buy up the remaining second-party developers like Insomniac and Sucker Punch before M$ft lures them over to the green side by throwing truckloads of, well, greenbacks at them. If this happens, that should be all Sony fan's worst nightmare.

As for MG going to the 360, you know this is the last thing Kojima wants to do, especially with all the shots he has taken at M$ft in his games; but like a good employee, he does what his bosses at Konami tell him to do.

Unfortunately, this also means this new MG game will NOT be as amazing as it could have been as a PS3 exclusive. I'm sure it will be good, just not as amazing as it could've been.

Anyway, take solace in the fact that MGS4 isn't being ported to the 360. I, however, would have loved to see them try and do it and either butcher it or put it on 20-plus DVDs.

Insomniac and Sucker Punch both have strong ties to SCE, and they both know that their fans are on sony consoles. I've been an avid fan of Insomniac ever since they came out with Spyro, and i know that there are a lot of other people out there who are loyal to both these studios.

The interesting thing is that both Insomniac and Sucker Punch are in a similar situation as Naughty Dog was, but they haven't been acquired Sony. I dont think it'll be much longer until one or both of these guys gets absorbed by Sony, and I'd be willing to put good money on the fact that something to the effect that they're "in talks" will come out soon. maybe even at e3

It's on both systems so why worry. Its a spin off, Snake is not there it is Raiden. I'll get it probably for the PS3 but it may depend on which version comes out first etc hell I may even get it on both systems to compare lol.

Not even here till next year probably anyway, so plenty other stuff to think worry about till then in between. :)

I'll admit that i'll probably get it too. but i'll compare playing it to getting a prostate exam, you hate it, but you know it needs to be done.

I just hope that it isn't like most multiplats where its substandard 'cause they made it for the Xbox and just ported it over for the PS3.
