Sony's E3 2009 Conference - Live Updates
Hey, folks. We're only about an hour and 10 minutes away from Sony's E3 conference. I'll be following the conference live. Keep refreshing this page for the new quick updates Sony brings and keep an eye open on the front page for Ben's full news stories on those updates. And, of course, feel free to go crazy in the comments section. Well, not too crazy.
Update 1: Conference starts in 15 mins.
Update 2: As always, Sony's conference doesn't start on time.
Update 3: I personally love how the PSP Go looks. Super thin, super light.
Update 4: No more bolding, Google Chrome is an awful browser that keeps locking up when I use HTML, and it's too late to open up Firefox. Ugh. Anyways, conference should start ANY minute.
Update 5: It has began.
Update 6: SingStar QUEEN!!! I LOVE YOU, FREDDY!
Update 7: Just a montage of upcoming PS3, PS2, and PSP games played to Queen. =)

Update 9: Just announced a total of 364 games hitting PS consoles this year.
Update 10: Tretton detailing AAA games like Modern Warfare 2 and Heavy Rain obviously hitting PS3.
Update 11: Sony has no intention on axing PS2 despite 10+ year age. It'll go until people stop buying it.

Update 13: Naughty Dog's Even Wells on stage now to show off Uncharted 2.

I know they've got money now, but they've lost their legendary status...it really saddens me
I hope next time around Nintendo wipes Microsoft out of the picture.
Then we can have the epic battle again: Nintendo VS Sony
^That's a fight not limited to North America, Nintendo and Sony cover all regions of the world.

Companies become complacent becuase of their success. For three years now, Microsoft has been claiming to be the top dog, and Nintendo has been the top Dog, and Sony is in a position it's not used to, it's not the leader of the market in units shipped. Sony's complacency has hurt it, but it has the opportunity to awaken, and in the last 6 months it has shown that it has woken from it's slumber. Microsoft is still acting cocky and appears to have somewhat of a complacent attitude, but Nintendo just look like they are asleep at the wheel. I guess their monumental pile of cash makes very comfortable bedding - not something I can argue with. But Nintendo really does seem to be content to sit back on it's laurels and eat some peeled grapes while the gladiators fight over what it views as the scraps.
Personally I think that Nintendo needs to watch out in case the Gladiators go for more than scraps. Certainly Sony appears to be pushing games. Big, high profile AAA titles and a wide range of new IP, not to mention Home and the innovations there, as well as all those other possible music and video services through PSN.
An interesting year this. Nintendo really need to sit up and take notice, or they risk losing the ground that they gained.

The thing is they could release 200 new IPs this year, sell an average of 10,000 copies of each and still lay claim to the most IPs in 2009, even if Say Sony cam with 60 IPs and sold an average of 40,000 copies per IP. Sony would have sold more units and generated far more revenue, but Nintendo could still legitimately claim more IPs than Sony.
Statistics are a science and an art. The science is the math, and the art is the presentation. A skilled analyst and presenter can cherry pick numbers from a pile of negative statistics and make (as the saying goes) a silk purse from a sow's ear.

Mario Galaxy 2 and Metroid are both 2010. Probably could even been towards the end of 2010. So what's coming in 2009? Nothing came in the second half of 2008 either. INCREDIBLE.
Those shooter only Dead Space and RE games have been done to death on the Wii. I hate 'em.

...it was incredible to see...
The WII conference wasn't good, however the Resident Evil game and DeadSpace (Extraction) were not bad for a games console that is not a games console.
I am in HOME and around the Podium Stage area now if anyone is around... you should spot me...

Microsoft's show was good but Sony is definitely in a position to steal it if they planned it right.

I seriously don't even think we'll see a new Wii for years and years to come. The users don't care about graphics. The motion plus just added like 2 more years to the console's life.

I never thought I'd see the day when Queen easily ousts the Beatles, but they do.
That's a lot of games in a year, 364! I'm sure that includes some localizations, but still, that's a lot of games.

And it was still amazing!
What does worry me is no mention of the MGS game. Maybe it's too far off in the future to even mention for Sony. MS probably had to mention because they felt like them stealing some of Kojima's soul was worth mentioning.

I knew Sony would come out and embarass themselves with a wii-mote rip off.
After what MS showed yesterday they should have just dumped this from the conference.
What am i supposed to do, attatch these remotes to my feet so that i can kick or jog??
The tech demo showed some promise, but it wasn't as slick as what MS showed, and more importantly MS is doing the exact same thing but without a glowing controller.

See how that guy looked holding all those different objects in his hands? Amazing!!! And that was just a bare bones tech demo. The archery was freakinnnn amazing. OMG Natal looks like rubbish now, even that Milo thing has lost my interests now...And WII's remotes are garbage compared to those. Imagine Sony Music with instruments with those babies. Drums anyone. Golfing. OMG OMG. And shooting and fighting games? Imagine a future GOW game that uses those controllers? That blows me away.
And no those guys said the controllers will not look like those with the light on top. They are just prototypes right now..Wow all I can say is SONY WINS E32009!!!!!

On the up side, there were some sweet announcements, the motion controller for instance, I love stuff like that so I was very happy about it. And FFXIV, until I saw that it was online, then I went boo. The Last Guardian was cool, but basically the same trailer we saw not too long ago. GOW III demo, but not for us. Other than that, nothing interesting at all...
Why do Sony always do this? "You will be surprised by our great announcements" and then they drop the ball over and over again...
I do have to say though that their lineup surpasses both Microsoft's and Nintendo's, but I wanted them to crush them, which didn't happen, they just bi*** slapped them a little bit.

I'm still floored by how well the PSP is being provided for this year, and in all honesty found it's line up discussed in this press conference more impressive than the 2009 lineup for the 360 discussed yesterday. And that's without some key titles already announced such as Namco with Soul Calibur on PSP.
Then the PS3 announcements begin, and again we see lots of things and we know of several major AAA titles that already have release dates and yet were not discussed - for example the upcoming Ratchet game. WOW, I'm impressed.
I'm still not taken with these motion control systems from Sony or Microsoft. Sony's one looks much more like the kind of motion tracking/capture technology used in film production, where the 360 version resembles more the kind of interaction possible already with the standard PSEye. Either way, I really think that this non-sense about motion controls is nuts, and Sony already has a perfectly good motion sensing controller and motion capture/tracking with Eyetoy. While 360 users have not had access to the motion sensing controllers we have, I still do not understand this apparent need for ever more motion tracking.
Overall it felt that Sony had lots more meat on the bones of their presentation, although the lack of date for GT5 on PS3 has me troubled. At the end of the day I do rank the 3 main presentations as Sony, then Microsoft and far behind either of them comes Nintendo. Further behind still is EA with it's dreadfully condescending games for girls, talk about cringe worthy.

Funnily enough this enhanced controller has me thinking of how you could control your Home avatar with more realism, and also allowing your avatar to be a real virtual actor in the machinima studio in Home. I do see that there are some applications for which it can work really well, just as SizAxis can, but it's not a controller scheme that will replace my hand held controler for normal use. IMHO of course.

Microsofts control-less demo is already all over the news worldwide, Sony's wii-mote wont be.
People will always see it as a wii-mote rip off.
Its not enough for wii owners to want to change, as they wont understand that it can do more stuff.
Microsoft took it to the next level im afraid, and we're left with a gimmick.
The only decent exclusive announcements that we didn't know about were Rockstars, which only showed a logo for 5 seconds (expect it in 2012).. And final fantasy 15, a questonable mmo which we're almost cenrtaintly gonna have to pay for.
Where was the Gt5 gameplay footage??
where was Heavy Rain??
Twisted metal??
I wanted at least another 2 exclusives too.
Lets hope we see more trickle out in the next few days for ps3.
Microsoft didn't even show off Mass Effect in their conference. it showed up at EA's.

Wish they would have shown the MGS game, Heavy Rain (for those interested, not really my type of game), the Ratchet game and the Rockstar game.
Was the game you guys have played mentioned today Arnold or Ben?

If multi-plat and 360 exclusive games are not able to continue to improve at the rate of PS3 exclusives, we could see a situation where the PS3 games of 2010/2011 are visibly a generation ahead of the rest. Could this be the ultimate illustration of the hare and tortoise? The Hare using all it's energy right away and hoping to coast to the end and the Tortoise getting off to a slow but steady start and gradually building speed and still accelerating across the finish line ahead of the rather tuckered out hare?

All those exclusives could not be done on 360 hardware. No way. And Uncharted made Ubisofts exclusive 360 title (Conviction or whatever it was) pale in comparison. Mag looked amazing as well and looked to run incredible with what little we saw and showcases that only the PS3 through PSN can deliver MASSIVE ONLINE GAMING EXPERIENCES whereas Live can only handle a bare minimum of 24 players online without blowing up.
Those motion controller had me smiling and laughing way more when I saw Sony's demo using them rather than the amazement I saw with MS's Natal.
Project ICO was a testament of how drop dead Gorgous games can look and play on the PS3 and that is into 3 yrs of the PS3's lifecycle. Imagine the future!!
GT5 on the PSP looked dam amazing with the vast amount of cars and tracks and detail brought out on the handheld shows the hardware can be pushed much more.
MGS on PSP blew me away too. That game looked amazing and allows us to enjoy Snake once again. Very impressed. Loved the comedy at the end of it with the box. LMAO!!
The trailer with GT5 blew away Forza3 and the addition of the Nascar franchise is gonna be huge with EA Sports totally sucking there. USA are huge Nascar fans and I can't imagine how many will spring for a PS3 and GT5 just for that. That game is gonna be huge and now that we know that Simulated damage and weather effects are in I'm sweating in my shorts for that game. Too bad a time frame wasn't announced, but the wait will be well worth it. I'm now seeing a release after next years E3. Let Forza 3 have it's limelight then totally crush it in the near future.
And last of all GOW3 was mindboggling!

While not perfect due to some titles being left out and release dates not said (i think time constraints were due to that), it was incredibly impressive. The FF14 announcement was the mark of the landslide victory.
The Last Guardian was my fave....what an improvement!

Sony's best E3 and they won this year hands down. Glad I didn't get to excited yesterday and say to much that I would regret today after seeing Sony's amazing kick ass show!!

MICROSOFT:
Full body motion detection in fully positionable 3d space.
Audio and Visual functions were both displayed both on a slick looking video showing what we'll see in the future, and on stage demos.
Fully inteligent voice controls were demoed
Paint Party and Milo both resembled slick finished games.
SONY:
No full body motion. Just the tracking of hands using two "wii-style" controllers.
No promo videos showing the posibilities of the device.
An on stage demo only, which did not show any audio capabilities.
The demo itself was in its very very early stages, infact I'd estimate that we've seen better graphics prior to 1995.
Nothing at all was shown that resembled a full game.
Who knows which of these devices will "win" in the end. but one things for sure, from what we were allowed to see from both companies, MS won hands down on the motion control front.

1. Wii's conference was painful & overly boring to watch, everybody up there speaking seemed to be made of cardboard....stiff, frozen smiles, and robotic in action, especially that frumpy acting Cammy woman.
And WTF was she wearing, was that a early 70's Goodwill polyester disco pantsuit, complete with elephant bell bottoms????
Anyways, that Wiimote+ is still really the
same ole mote, just with some percentage more accuracy than before. And of all the games
they showed, none really impressed me except for their 2 new exclusives, Metroid:Another-M, & Conduit.
Oh, and I've also got to say their new S-E Final Fantasy Crystal Babies(or something
like that). It just blows me away that any
"FF" game, what-so-ever, can even be done on
a Wii.
2. MS put on a pretty good show. Although I never noticed the gadget/unit, itself, I thought their "PRE"natal idea was much better than the Wii's. But I think even Stevie wonder's still laughing at that painting demo, geez, what a frigging joke that was!
And they really didn't show us much in games, most were either multi plats or money stuffed exclusives. I will say though that I was impressed with their some of their own exclusive games, Foza3, Alan Wake, Halo HSDT(???), & APB looked damned good.
3.(Cue up Queen's song "We are the Champions" right now)
"In the middle of the ring(referee holds Sony "The Playstation" Three's hand's up high) Laaadies and gentlemeeeen, we have the winner, SONY....the undisputed super-heavyweight champion of the world", in year-round number three by knock-out!
Even though the Sony-mote is still in
prototype stage, all I can say is "WOW"!
That Sonymote prototype is at least 9 months from coming out, and it already just
belittled MS's PRE-natal with it's well-
defined pinpoint accuracy.
Not to mention too, how perfectly flawless
it was in those sports, gun, draw & paint demo's. And I believe them when they said that
"It will bridge the gap between the real & virtual world"
On to the PSP Go's, it's a great idea for those who like "D/L only" content(I don't). And just
look at all the games being brought out for
it & the PSP 3000, such as GT with it's 800 cars & 35 tracks, & the PSOne remake, "FF7"!
And with 345 PS3 games coming out this year, matter of fact, over 35 of them are 1st party exclusive to the PS3 alone. Wow! Games like their newest "Play, Create, Share" LBP-styled "ModNation Racers" where you can edit everything, the drivers, cars, track, landscape, and weather. WOW! And with GT5,
God Of War, The Last Guardian, etc, the hits just keep on coming!
Hell, Sony didn't just win the fight, Sony stomped em, & then took their numbers so they can pistol-whip em with their Sony-mote later on too!
