E3 2009: Final Fantasy XIV Footage, Exclusive To PS3!

Square-Enix dropped the bombshell at last year's E3 by announcing Final Fantasy XIII for the Xbox 360. But they had a little something else up their sleeve this year, and you had best prepare yourselves.

After showing off a drool-worthy video of Final Fantasy XIII - GOD, we want that soooo bad - Jack Tretton made the single biggest announcement of the conference thus far: he showed off the first footage ever of Final Fantasy XIV and...oh dear Lord...it'll be exclusive to the PlayStation 3! Now, it did say it would be online and we don't know if it'll be entirely online like Final Fantasy XI, but based on the trailer, it almost seems unlikely. We saw a lot of what appeared to be cut-scenes and non-interactive footage, so we'd like to think it will feature a single-player quest. It did say it'll launch in late 2010, though, which makes us think FFXIV will be a more online-oriented title that might even hit store shelves close alongside FFXIII. But either way, this is absolutely gigantic and will certainly kick off a firestorm of discussion and conversation. Who said Square-Enix is ignoring PS3 owners? ...oh, wait, we did. Well, they were, but perhaps they're making up for it entirely with this new announcement, and we can guarantee we'll be seeking more details ASAP.  ...my fingers are actually shaking.

Okay, that's that. We move right along to Sony's new motion-sensing technology, which actually appears more advanced than what Microsoft revealed yesterday...

It seems that maybe not so exclusive. On gamespot Square talked about keeping open for a port to Microsoft's hardware (and since it's comming to the PC that's probably ref. the 360).

I would much rather see some gameplay from FF13Vs and a new kingdom hearts for Ps3 than another online FF game. I play RPG's to immerse myself in a single player experience, not share it with other people in a limited scope. BLA

Oh and when he initially announced this game, I thought Sony was pulling our leg... which would have been mean and all. But damn, my jaw hit the floor when I realized this was not a joke. Even though I hated FF11 (because of it's massive difference from WoW), I hope that they make some changes with FF14, and HOPEFULLY it isn't completely online.

This is exactly how they originally announced Final Fantasy XIII, with those horrible words "...Will be exclusive to the playstation 3 WHEN IT LAUNCHES in 2010"

Why do i get the feeling this is going to turn out to mean that it launches in Japan first, then on ps3 and 360 together at a later date.
Still... awesome announcement.

What if it's simply an out and out FF RPG with online enablement so you can assemble a party combined from in-game NPCs and your friends and play the story together, that way when your friends aren't there to play, you can sub in the NPCs again. That didn't sound as clear when I wrote it as it did in my head. What I'm trying to get at is that in a traditional offline RPG you have your party of characters that you build and adventure with. In a traditional MMO, you have a party made from individual avatars of your friends or associates. How about a game that can be played just like a traditional RPG without any online interaction at all, or by two friends together along with some NPCs. You might play with four friends one day, and only one the next and the NPCs in your party take the place of your absent friends so that you can continue playing.

Hmmm, that's still not very clear. Ah well I hope I got the message across.

No, you didn't. You made a statement of fact: "it's not exclusive."

That's wrong. Theorize all you want, but don't start jumping to conclusions, ESPECIALLY if we're talking about an MMO. You may not have noticed, but the Network has several exclusive titles coming, including The Agency and MAG. I suppose Microsoft will just buy those, too...?

Ehm, if it will be out on the PC as well it's not exclusive to the PS3, so how was that an inaccurate statement??

And I have no idea about the other titles, I'm not saying that MS will buy FFXIV either, but I think that if it will come out on the PC, and FFXIII comes out on the 360, it seems kind of inevitable that FFXIV will be out on the 360 too. SE wants to make money, and the 360 have a very large online user base, so it seems like a smart financial move to put the game out on that console as well.

(just to be clear, I don't own a 360, so I'm not some kind of 360 fanboy trying to stir things up, just trying to be realistic)

After I said it wasn't exclusive to the PS3 I wrote was what my theory on a 360 release of the game, I used words as "probably" etc.

Why is it when a game is a timed exclusive for the 360, 360 gamers scream "Exclusive!"

Yet when a game is an exclusive for the PS3, 360 gamers scream "Its just timed!"

Maybe the answer may lie in the fact that a majority of the 360 gamers are 17-24...

I have to admit, I'm more psyched for this than I am for FFXIII

And it's not 'cause it's exclusive to ps3, it's because of the LOOK. It looks more like FF should look, a bit more traditional and seems more deeply rooted to FF roots, unlike FFXIII.

Still detest most of FFXIII's characters, the more I see of them the more cheesy it looks/feels.

Is this project, FFXIV, the next-gen MMO the team behind FFXI is working on? I remember reading a few interviews with the producer of FFXI and he said his crew was working on a new MMO for the PS3 and that it would be a bit different than FFXI. Can anyone confirm this?

Also, for us FFXI veterans here, the line "..must join hands once again..." is without a doubt a direct tag to FFXI, wherein that quote "join hands" was used often in its marketing. Even the text is the same and it blatantly says "ONLINE" underneath FFXIV. The art style and music appears to be direct successors. I can't say I agree with your assumptions, Ben, it's too obvious this is the successor to FFXI. But hey, we'll just have to see. Can anyone confirm my question above?

i played FFXI for almost 3 years, even beta tested it on the ps2.

FFXI was always rumored to be having a squeal to it, which FFXIV is "that".

You're not alone.

It's probably the servers because everything else I've downloaded were quick and when VII came up to download it was slow. Looks like another overnight download. sigh... At least it was $9.99 putting to rest the fears everyone had about it's price.

On a side note
Does anyone if ACC is coming to PSN Video? I'm getting the Blu version but I want it on my psp as well.

Well quite frankly Sony's press conference was good but not great. I felt that what made Sony's press conference from being great is that fact of the media leaks. One example is the PSP GO, because of the leak, it really stole away all the buzz surrounding the PSP. Next, was the new game by team ICO, we basically saw that trailer about few weeks back. Next, was the new motion sensing controller was Sony, which was also leaked out last year with videos which are similar to what was demoed during the press conference.

Therefore, I felt kinda bored by Sony's press conference really as compared to MS's, which surprised me by its Project Natal. The only thing that surprised me and got me excited was the Final Fantasy 14 Announcement. Initially i thought it was a joke, but turns out it was real. However, when it was announced that it was an online game, i just felt the game was 'Meh'.

I also thought Sony could do better with their press conference is to show more footage of their highly anticipated games, like they should show off more of PSP's LBP, or heavy rain, or even show off some footage of White Knight Chronicles. There are a few blockbuster games missing from the press conference. And they wasted so much of time showing off their latest game Modnation Racers, which may be a good exclusive, but not the one Sony should be wasting their time presenting at the press conference. Heck, the guys on stage showing off the game didnt really want to leave the stage, just kept on showing off the game. As a result, they had to cut short the GOWIII demo. Sigh....

but anyway, still a good press conference from Sony, great line up of exclusives and more major announcement should be made soon. Heck, I really hope that Sony have a post E3 press conference to announce more stuff, which is Highly unlikely. :(

Honestly i wouldnt want a PS3 slim at the moment, it will just confuse consumers, cause Sony has been releasing alot of SKUs for the past years. Besides, the PS3 still looks beautiful. lol. As for a price cut, I wished that they announce a price cut during the press conferene, cause Sony really needs to boost its sales, but i guess they are just holding out till it gets closer to the holiday season which will be sometime coming this fall. A price cut is inevitable

I guess there must be a reason why Sony couldnt show any footage of any of the missing blockbuster titles during the press conference. Maybe the developers were not rdy or dont have anything else to show at that moment. It could also due to Sony choosing to release more footage at a better time than during the press conference. Who knows whats Sony is thinking unless you work in Sony :P

The battle system in XI is pretty similar to XII's. There are a ton of different jobs you can take, and summoner is one of them.

Like many people discussing FFXI, I was extremely skeptical at first. When I finally laid down the cash for the HDD PS2 package, I was not prepared for one of the *best* gaming experiences I've ever encountered (and I've played thousands of video games). Yes, almost every aspect of the FF series was included in XI. Close to one hundred spells and almost all summons were available to you in the game, not to mention almost every job (class) is available for play and can be leveled to 75. One thing that kept me coming back was seasonal events for like Halloween or Christmas where the towns would be decorated, players could do special quests, and could earn seasonal gear. Weekly updates to the game always kept things fresh (new areas, new gear, new enemies, etc). I still get depressed thinking about FFXI because I had worked for weeks to unlock almost all prime summons who were amazing to play with and quit shortly thereafter.
FFXI was/is not for casual gamers or for gamers who won't commit some time. Gameplay could be slow at times, leveling seemed like a chore, and gil sellers (human/robot players designed to harvest rare items/money) made you want to quit at times. I won't lie, there were many *extreme* challenges in the game such as low level quests requiring high level assistance or trying to ascend your player's job level above 60 being insane. But that's where the game shined, you made dozens of friends and you helped each other through the game. It is a social game and was designed for players to reach out, befriend others, and join Linkshells (communities). All environments, characters, and enemies were extremely and beautifully detailed. Why would people still be playing the game since launch? It is a high quality offering and extremely addicting for the fact there is so much to do and so many adventures await. I'm sure anyone who has laid down some time to FFXI will say the same; the pros outweigh the cons in an extremely rewarding experience unlike any other. I will honestly and proudly say it was one of the most emotionally-attached games I've ever committed to. Even though I quit almost 2 years ago, I made some great friends whom I still talk to. You won't be disappointed and even though I will probably *once again* lose my social life, I think I am going to "join hands once again" and dive into FFXIV

Personally FFXI was a love/hate relationship for me. It certainly took a decent amount of time investment to get anywhere in the game, which will ultimately take a nice chunk out of your life. That part I hated.

I think that many were turned away due to the complexity of the game. There was so much to do and very little direction given at the start of the game. Since then, SE has added many new tutorials to help beginners find their way.

As for myself, that is what I loved about the game. There was so much for one to do; make food, furniture, clothing or armor, weapons, go fishing, chocobo raising, harvesting, an endless number of options.

The job system in FFXI is the best I have ever played in any RPG. The ability to set a main and sub job allowing you to mix and match each job to create a character that fit your playing style. FFXI also had one of the largest (if not the largest) job selections in any RPG that I have ever played.

I am looking forward to this game.

Nynja, you covered the stuff I forgot to mention! Jeeze, just thinking about the PlayOnline menu and login screen and all the great things in FFXI makes me want to play it again. I agree wholeheartedly about the love/hate as far as time investment goes. Hours would just float by as you were leveling up or doing whatever you were doing.

Off topic: I understand every dollar counts in a gamers' finances, but I am just baffled when the main reason people shoot down an excellent MMO like FFXI is because of the monthly fees. It's $12 per month for the first character and $1 for each additional. That's a CD, a meal at a restaurant, or, it's just $12! An hour or so of work that covers a whole month from server maintenance to weekly updates, $12 is irrelevant to the experience you have. Yes, it adds up over time, but hey, you won't find that gaming experience anywhere else. I tried WoW to help me cope when I ended FFXI, but it did not come anywhere near as close as to the experience FFXI offered.

Nynja, I don't know how you feel, I hope things might be a bit 'quicker' in XIV as far as endgame stuff goes (like leveling beyond 65). I am really excited to know it's pretty much the same team behind XIV as were behind XI. Being a musician, Uematsu's compositions just take the cake for me and were part of the reason I liked XI so much. I can only imagine how breathtaking everything is going to look in full HD, I am truly excited about this game as well! I wonder what new activities and whatnot they're going to add...

Microsoft has policies that forbid PS3/360 cross-platform gaming. Burnout Paradise was supposed to be cross-platform, but that didn't happen now did it. Lets face it, if square has to pick they will pick their biggest market. Who is their biggest market? Probably the Japanese.

So, SquEnix let Sony go ahead and announce FFXIV to the world as exclusive to Sony PS3, and then in just 24 hours they pull this stunt and essentially say that Sony is wrong, it's not exclusive. Yeah, this is a company one can trust, Sony's folks must be furious behind the scenes. If SquEnix were looking at other platforms beyond PS3, then they should not have had Sony go and announce this as PS3 only.

What people have to remember is that SE is a company, and companies wants to make money, and not releasing this title on the 360 seems pretty stupid financially. But I agree that they could've said so to start with.

I personally don't really care what titles are exclusives or not, I understand why most developers chose to go multiplat these days, and as long as I'm able to play the titles that I want to play on my PS3 I couldn't care less if 360 users can play them as well...

Well, take FFXIII for instance, they build the game from the ground up on for the PS3, and when they're done they're gonna port it over to the 360. If it wasn't released on the 360, you would still get the exact same game that you're getting now. So why does it matter?

And define evolving? I can agree that the ps3 exclusives for the most part looks really good, but I doubt that they would look any less good if they were coming out on the 360 as well. FFXIII shows that it's possible for a great looking PS3 game to get done on a 360 as well.

There are 360 exclusives that are also pushing the gaming industry, Mass Effect for instance, I never played it, but I watched when my brother played it a little, and it looked really great. Bioshock that was a 360 exclusive at first was a really great game, it got ported over to the PS3 for us to enjoy too. Would you say that games like Bioshock isn't evolving the gaming industry? And are using old recycled code?

I'm happy when 360 exclusives comes out on the PS3 as well, not because I have a feeling of "aha, we got your game, noobs", but because I will have another game to play if I want to. And I think that non-flamer 360 players feel the same way, so why shouldn't we let them enjoy the great titles that we get to enjoy as well (as long as it doesn't compromise the ps3 version of the game)? I really think people need to get over this whole "my console-your console" attitude and see it for what it is, videogames.

I also agree that Gogaku is right to a certain extent, we shouldnt care whether 360 have the game or not. However, i will be disappointed if FFIV is indeed heading to the 360 because firstly, we are told that FFIV is coming to exclusively to the PS3 and that was the biggest announcement in Sony's press conference and only to be informed by SE thats it may not be exclusive to PS3, is just like a punch in the face to Sony and to us, as PS3 supporters.

Secondly, a great game being exclusive to a console is important in this generation of console war. This is because as Ben always says, software sales drives hardwares sales. For example, if FF14 is a kick-ass MMO, and its only exclusive to PS3, then people like MMO fans will have to own a PS3 in order to play it. If its not exclusive to PS3, then some people might buy it on the 360, therefore Sony will lose out on some hardware sales.

Thirdly, it is important for a game to be exclusive to Sony, but not necessarily to fanboys. This is because Sony can use it as a marketing tool to drive PS3 sales. And did you guys see Jack Tretton's face when he announced FF14, he looks so proud to be announcing FF14 and only EXCLUSIVE to the PS3 cause he knows that in this generation of console war, its ALL about the games, and which console has the better exclusives of games, will ultimately win the console war.

Yes, i am a huge Sony fan/supporter, but i do not go around thrash talking. I'm actually glad that Microsoft came about to produce a console, so that Sony can stop being arrogant, and happy to actually see Sony becoming the underdog, and is now hard at work, to please its consumers and trying to win this console war.

I hear what you're saying, but if Sony is going to use exclusive games as marketing tools, they need to actually use them as marketing tools. They really need to get their advertising act together... But that's a different issue.

My point is though why should we, as consumers, care so much if a game comes out on 360 as well as long as it doesn't hurt the game experience? I understand that it's important for Sony, but we that already have the console, why should we care? I mean, it's not like Sony is on the brink of going under and we not seeing any more games for the PS3, or no PS4 or anything like that. Sure, it's cool to be rooting for the system you bought, you don't want it to go under and to get great games, but it seems like there have to be a limit to the console patriotism. And I agree that it's good with competition, it drives prices, and gives us better games, but this crazy animosity towards owners of different consoles and developers wanting to make more money by going multiplat just seems so silly...
But then again, I'm someone who thinks it's kind of silly to be so incredibly devoted to a specific side of anything, including sports teams, countries, car models, etc. I guess it's basically the same thing, you want your team to win, in this case it just happens to be a videogame system and not the Steelers. :)

Yea, I respect you have your own opinion, for those who have the same opinion as you, wouldnt really care whether a game is exclusive or multiplat. However, there will be people like me who is well i wouldnt say devoted but just supporters of Sony PS3, would love to see exclusives games on PS3. Its almost the same as supporting a sports team. Then again, there are so many different types of supporters out there. Some are hooligans, some are extremists and some are open minded who welcomes competition. Therefore, there should be a limit as to so far a person would go to support/defend their console of choice.

Maybe Square being such "traitors" and announcing that this wasn't a ps3 exclusive after all is actually a GOOD thing.
PS3 owners seem to have just given up on Square, and in this thread I've seen some fairly decent non fanboy comments, which is very very cool.

I dared to question the MGS series exclusivity from now on over on the latest MGS news story and i got a threat to shut up or i'd get kicked off this site!!
Even though i was stating fact.

Maybe it would be best for gamers if every game came out on every platform, and we only chose consoles based on its features.

Either way, I cant wait to try FF14 on my PS3, PC and 360.. just to see which one feels right for an MMO.

I like PS3 over XBOX any day but, it would be great if this new FF installment ends up in the XBOX 360 as well. Just think about it, if you like SE and its games, you definitely want that company to be successful. By targeting a broader audience or market, SE will keep developing games for us. I believe that a port of FFXIV to the 360 will be a smart move for SE as well as for consumers, regardless of their personal preferences in terms of consoles. If you think that SE is back-stabbing or betraying us (PS3 owners), then you seriously can consider your self an ignorant and closed-minded person. I played FFXI on PC and made really great friends that were on XBOX therefore, I doubt I won't savor a great experience in FFXIV just because XBOX users will be around Eorzea.
Regards.

Although this game will not come out until who knows when, I'm already obsessed with it. I don't even wanna play anything else. Damn it, I need to forget about it and let some time pass.
