The BBC Journalist's Big Game Was: The Last Guardian
Well, at least we've cleared it up, once and for all.
Last year a BBC tech journalist, later revealed as Darren Waters, said he saw something that completely blew him away; something that was leaps and bounds ahead of any other game he had ever seen. He wouldn't say what this amazing-looking title was at the time, and ever since, the media and gamers alike have thought and theorized. Was it God of War III? After all, David Jaffe sang similar praise for that impending masterpiece. Or was it Heavy Rain, which was later unveiled in 2008? Well, as it turns out, it was The Last Guardian, Team ICO's secret PlayStation 3 exclusive that we knew briefly as "Project TRICO." Of course, now Waters says it's "impossible" for the game to live up to expectations. Said Waters to VG247:
"I’ve carried this secret for so long that it is an incredible relief to finally be able to talk about it openly. Obviously, the length of time that has passed between my first glimpse of the game and its unveiling at E3 means that it is impossible for the Last Guardian to live up to the hype built around this so-called ’secret BBC game.'
As a passionate gamer I’m really excited to see what the final playable game will be like. Ico and Shadow of the Colossus are such great titles, and the studio behind them so talented, that while there is a lot to live up to there is plenty of reason for optimism."
Well, it was our fault for turning this into something insane over the past year or so, but Waters shouldn't beat himself about it. That trailer really was downright amazing, and his first comment about it back in February 2008 - a "step change in what games consoles are capable of in terms of story-telling and immersion" - may not be far off the mark. However, Waters doesn't like the fact that this rumor has been ammunition for PS3 fanboys over the past year; "I hate the way this game has been used as yet another stick for fanboys to hit each [other] around the head," he said.
So that's that. What is the mystery game that BBC guy saw? It's The Last Guardian. If you didn't see the E3 video, it's basically the same one that was unofficially unveiled prior to the show, but we'll try to get you the E3 one ASAP.

And I have to say that the trailer for 'The Last Guardian' is one of the best I've ever seen (the trailer for 'Peace Walker' and the new one for 'Heavy Rain' were superb as well), and I downloaded it to my iPod as soon as I could for much repeat viewing.

Lol why did the company/people not reveal it at E3 it's the biggest game/console event in the industry ? Probably as there was already tons of stuff there anyway.
If Ben can't tell us the date when he can tell us about it, it could be a clue ie timewise, unless he just doesn't know and they will let him announce it in good time.

That would be fantastic. They really should do it what with the rpg drought this gen and it's got a huge fanbase.
I'd take a tactics true sequel over any killzone/halo/gears recycled FP gameplay now with 300 million shades of grey every time.

I just don't get that.
I haven't bought ICO and SOTC yet, so can someone tell me if they were both also done in the same manner, with "animated" people too?????

By the way, do yourself a favor and play those two games, there is nothing else to compare to, that is the reason why everyone who played love them so much. They can never be put in a specific class of game... Pure art in motion kind of deal...

I have been watching my 5 local GS/EB stores for used copies of them both for a couple months now.
I spyed a used copy of SOTC sitting up on the rack last week but as I zoomed over to it, someone else snatched it up before I could get to it. Then I spend the next 20 minutes watching him, hoping that he was short of cash & would put it back if he found another game he wanted more. But alas, he did buy it.
Oh well, it's just a matter of time, but I will get the whole ICO/SOTC/TLG trilogy.
