Sony: Third-Parties Already Receiving Motion Sensing Kits

Those of you who were blown away by Sony's awesome motion tech presentation at their E3 press conference only had one question afterward: "when?!"

Well, it depends, but there has been a lot of suspicion surrounding its competition, Microsoft's Project Natal. Some have claimed their presentation was "fake," in that Natal isn't exactly ready to go. On the flip side, according to Eurogamer, the development kits for Sony's motion sensing wands have already been distributed to designers. In a statement to GamSpot, Sony marketing guru Peter Dille had this to say on the subject:

"We're a little bit past the research phase.We're having conversations with the third-party community. The dev kits have started to go out to the third parties as well. They're working on the tech. They couldn't be more excited about it."

EA boss John Riccitiello has said they've had both Sony's tech and Natal in their possession for several months, and they've been toying around with 'em, seeing what each can do. It may not be long before other developers step forward and announce software for both techs, but if Microsoft hasn't provided developers with a kit just yet, than Sony has the slight edge. Of course, there's still no knowing when this technology will fall into the consumer's greedy little hands, but we're thinking it might be ready for the holidays. Stay tuned for more details.

Interesting. This let's us see into the process that Sony has, they are already getting Devs up to speed and developing games, and the final controller shape for retail is still being worked on (they showed a proto-type controller at E3). They're pushing hard with the development cycle on this.

Didn't they say in the conference that it will be ready spring next year? I'm sure i remember them saying something like 'that's when you will get your hands on them.' As long as they don't keep changing the date i won't mind waiting.

Isn't the case gonna be in the future then, that only exclusives will really use the motion sensing tech since if they implemented it in a multi-plat then one version is gonna be different from the other and we have learned that is something the developers dont want.

Perhaps it will encourage more exclusives? Or not.

Also, another thing, I believe motion sensing is another thing OnLive wouldnt be capable of doing, part of the plan maybe? As sony said, they arn't about to let anyone take over!

I'd think that EA - for example - is examining the technology from both to see what common functionality there is. The common functionality will be available in multi-plat games. As for anything specific, maybe they'll do it if it's not something that requires major changes to the game and offers a significant enhancement to gameplay.

i'm excited... not really for the motion controller for myself, but for the community. this will give sony something to compete against microsoft and nintendo with.

not too much of a fan for motion controls but thats mainly because of all the crap they are making for motion games.
i just really don't want to see a shitload of party games show up on PS3 that are all compilations of mini games.
thats the reason i got rid of my Wii
if Sony can actually have some proper big name games utilize this tech fully it would be great.

I know a lot of you guys here on this site say that motion sensing is a gimmick and that you'll pass on this product. But when they mentioned Real-Time-Strategy games in the press conference, i just thought of all the possibilities for that idea. i mean, i think RTS games are fun, but i always find myself thinking, "if only there is a faster way to 'push' my troops around the battlefield..." with this, i think that genre could excel. i hate talking to the game and saying phrases like "Unit 2 Attack Unit 5" or "Fireteam 1 Defend Bravo." i don't want to learn a load of verbal commands, i just want to push around my pawns. i think the sony controller would allow that to happen.

what say you?

I didn't think they would be giving out dev kits this soon. But then again, it was working quite well when they showed it off at E3... I wonder if its difficult to work with.

I hope square enix make Dragon Quest 10 on the ps3 with this tool kit... 9 seems interestin but ended up very short due to its on the Wii with limited specs... but imagine its on the PS3 it'll have so much more potential.

Never thought I would say this, but this along with Natal would be reduced to the fringe just as the original EyeToy.

Anyhow people don't get the fact that the Wii didn't succeed because of motion control, but mainly because it priced lower than 2 higher priced consoles.

I know people are sick of crappy minigames with motion controls. But I think the best way for sony to get these things into peoples homes would be to bundle them with an awsome party game. They could have all the first and second party studios in on it. like tell the insomniac guys to come up with a couple cool rathcet and clank themed games. And use all the cool mascot characters from all sorts of sony games in it. Like a sony styled mario party except actually use the 1 to 1 tracking for incredibly cool and fun mini games.

If they make good games, I'll be interested. Until then, I'm not too crazed by it, but I certainly don't deny the potential.
