Modern Warfare 2 Aims To "Look Like A Real Action Movie"

For our part, we believe the words "authenticity" and "realism" often have a lot in common. But Infinity Ward is going for one and not the other with their hotly anticipated sequel, Modern Warfare 2.

Studio boss Vince Zampella spoke to the Official PlayStation Magazine about their super huge project, and said they're going for entertainment value rather than a true-blue simulation. Some of you fans of the latter will argue that entertainment is subjective - "hey, I like realistic games! - but Zampella elaborates so as to avoid any confusion: "We go for authenticity not realism. We're not making a sim, we're making entertainment. We want it to look real like an action movie." Zampella admits that some of the futuristic weapons make the game seem a tad "over-the-top," but then again, isn't that what most all action movies are about in the first place? OPM has a big ol' feature focusing on Modern Warfare 2 so you should definitely pick it up when you get the chance. It also tells us about some of the environments (like one level set in Brazil), and the addition of some open-world exploring. But you needn't worry that it'll turn into Fallout 3, as Zampella says they only "do it where it fits;" in other words, if a more open level is suited to the situation, it'll be there. If not...not. But either way, you can bet that this game will be at or near the top of everyone's priority list come the holiday season.

Authenticity instead of realism. Hmm... It's difficult to reconcile the distinct differences in our brain, but we know Zampella means "authentic" in that it should look like a big-budget action movie. Yeah, we got that.

I'm picking MW2 up 1st day, this is going to be GOTY. Hopefully they give us a demo or release a beta later this year before the release of the game.

Essentially almost always Spike's GOTY ends up being a multiplat or something of the sort due to worry about picking an exclusive, so it'll probably be MW2. Not saying U2 isn't better though, since it will be XD

I fully agree with Cpt on this. I have logged over 75,000 kills in COD 4 online and I expect to do much more with this game. Just hope they carry over some of the weapons from the last game like the MP5. Really curious as to what the new perks will be like as well.

I've seen the trailers and it looks TOO good. Snow n all that reminds me of the classic Goldeneye. Cod4 is the best action fps since Goldeneye and i wonder if MW2 will take that crown.

This has a lot to live up to IMHO. Didn't like Preferred Resistance 2 to WaW and Prefer Killzone 2 to R2. I personally have higher hopes for Battlefield Bad Company 2. I spent more time online with the first one than Modern Combat; even with the lag.

Just saw the big trailer for it a few days ago and I have to say. Is Sev from Killzone 2 in there? cause if he's not, then they made a character who looks just like him.

To be honest, I just want COD4 with slightly updated graphics, new maps, new weapons and new weapons.

I don't care if people call it a €60 map pack. Why change a perfect game?

if its not broke dont fix it, right?

as long as the online is comparable, and it feels the same (controlls)as cod4, and the ak-47 and C8 Carbine are there, im happy... if not, meh not a big deal, still getting this game day 1..

I completely agree. There is a major chance I will not bother to play the story mode at all. Straight to the online portion of the game.

I can't wait for this game! I spent more time playing COD4 online than anything else and I think we can all agree IW is gonna take it to another level this time around. I bet because of the incredible sales of COD4 (over 10 million copies) IW received a generous budget for the sequel, and in their competent hands, I think we'll see some amazing action.

Between Modern Warfare 2, Mag and Uncharted, all itchy trigger fingers should get a good scratchin' this year.

Side note:

In the dictionary, real is used as a synonym for authentic but I think what this studio boss Vince Zampella meant was that the game will be like an authentic action movie. In other words, it will have the essential elements of a blockbuster action flick and will deliver an authentic 'action film' experience, but the game won't be realistic, as in, imitating real life, like Full Spectrum Warrior or something.

A curious distinction nonetheless.

Picking up MW2 when it comes out, but this will be my last COD. I do not want it to be the next Halo (after ODST, I did't want another one, but alas, Reach....was announced lol).

In my book,
Authenticity should mean realism.

Sure hope MM turns out as another "gotta have" AAA game, and isn't gimped up by this.

I think they want to have the gameplay be more like Old School Free-for-All with unrealistic stuff going on. Maybe some super jumping abilities and such. You know action films have some WTH?! moments combined with some "C'mon now... :-\"

If this over-the-top cartoonish gameplay doesn't do the trick, the Modern Warfare servers will still be up and running. It's nice to have choices.

I f**kin' knew this was going to happen after seeing that trailer.

I'm out; Killzone 2 will probably be my favourite FPS for 2009.
