Modern Warfare 2 Aims To "Look Like A Real Action Movie"
For our part, we believe the words "authenticity" and "realism" often have a lot in common. But Infinity Ward is going for one and not the other with their hotly anticipated sequel, Modern Warfare 2.
Studio boss Vince Zampella spoke to the Official PlayStation Magazine about their super huge project, and said they're going for entertainment value rather than a true-blue simulation. Some of you fans of the latter will argue that entertainment is subjective - "hey, I like realistic games! - but Zampella elaborates so as to avoid any confusion: "We go for authenticity not realism. We're not making a sim, we're making entertainment. We want it to look real like an action movie." Zampella admits that some of the futuristic weapons make the game seem a tad "over-the-top," but then again, isn't that what most all action movies are about in the first place? OPM has a big ol' feature focusing on Modern Warfare 2 so you should definitely pick it up when you get the chance. It also tells us about some of the environments (like one level set in Brazil), and the addition of some open-world exploring. But you needn't worry that it'll turn into Fallout 3, as Zampella says they only "do it where it fits;" in other words, if a more open level is suited to the situation, it'll be there. If not...not. But either way, you can bet that this game will be at or near the top of everyone's priority list come the holiday season.
Authenticity instead of realism. Hmm... It's difficult to reconcile the distinct differences in our brain, but we know Zampella means "authentic" in that it should look like a big-budget action movie. Yeah, we got that.

Between Modern Warfare 2, Mag and Uncharted, all itchy trigger fingers should get a good scratchin' this year.

In the dictionary, real is used as a synonym for authentic but I think what this studio boss Vince Zampella meant was that the game will be like an authentic action movie. In other words, it will have the essential elements of a blockbuster action flick and will deliver an authentic 'action film' experience, but the game won't be realistic, as in, imitating real life, like Full Spectrum Warrior or something.
A curious distinction nonetheless.

If this over-the-top cartoonish gameplay doesn't do the trick, the Modern Warfare servers will still be up and running. It's nice to have choices.
