Call Of Duty: World At War Tops 11 Million Sold In 7 Months
It may be the most lucrative video game franchise of the new generation, and Call of Duty shows no signs of slowing down.
Last month, Activision Blizzard revealed that Infinity Ward's Call of Duty: Modern Warfare, launched in 2007, had sold over 13 million copies worldwide. Now, according to GameSpot, the publisher has reported that last year's effort, Treyarch's Call of Duty: World at War, has already topped the 11 million mark...and it only took 7 months. The estimates for Modern Warfare 2 - set to launch in November - are also through the roof and at this point, it's hard to imagine the CoD franchise ever failing in the market. After this year's installment (which isn't technically a "Call of Duty"), we may be looking at either a Cold War or Vietnam setting for the seventh iteration of the franchise, which will likely release towards the end of 2010. Is anyone noticing a trend here? Madden releases every August without fail it seems, and now, it's almost inevitable that CoD will get an annual entry. It doesn't appear as if any fans will be complaining, though.
And despite the stiff competition this holiday season, we seriously doubt that Modern Warfare 2 will fall shy of expectations. That thing is gonna be immune to the competition.

And while i think Prince is a great guitar player, his music still sucks. You can be a good guitar player and still play crap music.

Prince plays 27 instruments and is master level with all. He can compose melodies like no other because no one else can think like that.
Go tell a musician what you said and you will be laughed at. I don't expect you to know this stuff though from your hilarious remarks. Sign o the times....crap? lmao
No, never said people who play it are idiots. I play lots of mindless games....i was stating fact, mindless stuff sells. Artistic, well thought out works with depth mostly do not.

For some people "WoW" is "mindless", for others, they find it far better than trawling through Encyclopedia Britannica... everyone to his own...
I always say though... whatever anyone does in their lives... go for a balanced approach, too much of anything is not good... whether it is playing "mindless" games, listening to "mindless" music, playing "mindless" sport... whatever it is... just have a balance in life... you can do most things safely whilst enjoying the experience without it taking over all facets of your life... whatever it is you enjoy.

Never cared for his music, though. Don't hate it, don't like it.

I don't think I'll be buying MW2, though. I do think it will sell the most copies of any 3rd party game in 2009. That or Assassin's Creed.

Annual titles like Madden and Tiger Woods from EA don't advance enough for me to warrant the annual purchase. Each game looks and feels too much like the previous iteration, and I think EA could easily just release updated NFL and PGA rosters as DLC while working to create true sequels to the franchises. Not only would they save on development costs, fans of the games would certainly appreciate paying the smaller fee.
But as long as Madden and TW continue to sell, I don't see EA changing their business model anytime soon.

Yeah, sorry for the rant. COD4 has an impressive single-player, what with the epic and cinematic storytelling. I'm just not an FPS guy at all, and to me COD is the most bland and uninteresting of all FPS titles.
But what do I know? I like Timesplitters. So, if you enjoy it, more power to you.

I feel bad for the mayority of PS3 exclusives games dad didnt sell so well thanks to these yearly franchises. I have 100 friends on my PSN and of them about 90% only play COD!! They didnt bother to try other games and when they do they end up comparing it to COD. Ex Killzone 2. I feel bad for all the PS3 fanboys ranting in sites like N4G about the superiority of PS3 games and yet they dont bougth its exclusives games...they only bougth COD and GTA. I have more than 35 PS3 games and most of them are exclusives, I am a CALL OF DUTY FAN., but I AM most importan...A GAMER!!
PEACE AND GAMING!!

I'd wait for Infinity Ward to release Modern Warfare 2 before making that claim. The trailers I have seen look to introduce some new elements that could significantly alter the experience.
And while it's sad to see exclusive PS3 titles perform poorly, Killzone 2 isn't a game we should feel sorry for. It sold over a million units worldwide by mid-April. So it didn't flop, but if it had, you can't blame the competition.
If you make a game that sells, you make a sequel. You'd be a dummy-head not to. If the sequel sells, you've got a franchise on your hands. If your franchise is multiplatform, it will generate more buzz because your game is introduced to a broader audience.
Don't get me wrong, I love Killzone 2. And maybe by the time Killzone 6 rolls around, Guerilla can boast equally impressive sales numbers.

Why buy the same platformer over and over? All you do is jump from platform to platform right? Why buy the same rpg over and over? All you do is watch cutscenes right?
There is more variety to shooters than many people here bother to realize. Modern Warfare and Killzone 2 are both first person shooters but are completely different games. Killzone 2's cover mechanic should be evidence enough of that.
Also, Bioshock is an fps and it's unlike anything else out there.

I tend to play through MW every once in a while so i will be looking forward to MW2. But I will never again enjoy the COD franchise as much as before.... Killzone 2 just blew my mind... Nothing compares to that monster.
So I will get my COD's as my FPS quick fix and "arcade" style FPS. But my Killzone will be close by.
That brings me to my actual point I wanted to make. So basically everyone will vote COD:MW2 as the FPS of the year just because it will sell 10 million copies, but looks and plays the same as all the others, while Killzone will loose out just because they are all hating on Sony again... I don't see how that will be fair.
