Afrika Gets Trophies In The US

It has finally been revealed that after launching in both Japan and Asia, the long-awaited Afrika is headed to North America. There has been a little confusion during this time, but after its E3 appearance, thinks are rapidly clearing up.

First of all, even though it was initially set to be distributed by National Geographic, it somehow ended up in Natsume's hands. The new publisher hasn't been all that specific about this switch, but it's enough to know that it happened. Then, in a recent Siliconera interview with Vice President of Operations Graham Markay, we have learned that the US version will boast a few extra treats. You know, like Trophies!

"First and foremost there is going to be a trophy system, which wasn’t in the Asian release or Japanese release. There have been other suggestions from us and other parties. So, we’ve been working with Rhino Soft and Sony now to tweak it. Obviously, that’s not the final version out there so we’re trying to see what we can do to help make it a touch better."

So even though we've had to wait, the final product should be the best version available anywhere in the world, which is kinda cool. If you're not quite familiar with the game yet, you can check our in-depth preview. Really, it's right up your alley if you're into original themes in video games, and especially if you've always wanted to be a nature photographer. It's not an easy gig, as this game will likely prove. We'll let you know when they've nailed down a concrete release date, but for now, it's set to launch at some point later this year.

I think so. Even if it doesn't you can purchase the NA version since all PS3 games are region free.

Failing that purchase Hakuna Matata - the Asian market version of Afrika, which features English in addition to Chinese and other Asian languages.

Wow, maybe now I can unplug and store the N64 and Pokemon Snap for the kids. They love that game...

Is the game gonna be able to run at 1080p? I loved playing 'Flower' in that resolution.

In any event, it sounds very interesting and in a genre of its own. nice...

can you attack the animals and get killed by them?

if so, I'd love to play this.

No. This really isn't that type of game.

I think some of the animals may rush you or something, but you're not HUNTING them. You're photographing them.

I absolutely love this game. I imported the Asian version several months ago. If they can get it to run at 1080p and it will have trophies I may buy another copy once the price is low enough.

Yeah, but those might be some of the "tweaks" they were talking about. I'm not saying the animals will rush and tackle you but... I read a review somewhere saying it wasn't that great of a game because you can't get close at all to the animals.

If you're fairly patient you can get very close. If you're running around acting crazy like that, they'll run away or some of them will charge and attack you, and you'll lose every picture and progress from that day and wake up back at base camp.
Lions, Rhinos, Elephants, Buffalo, Zebras, etc. can and will charge you if they feel threatened.

Reviewers will have to be careful with how they handle this title. It's not a by the numbers action game, nor is it anything like a by the numbers hunting game. It's a game that is very far removed from the things that reviewers are used to playing. As such, they need to be careful not to under or over inflate their score. I can see some reviewers ripping this game because it's not 'actiony' enough for them, or because it's too (for want of a better word) girlie because there's no shooting. On the other hand, some reviewers may be tempted to lavish praise on the game for it's innovative approach. Neither extreme would do this game justice, nor will it help gamers decide.

Yeah, well ...why the hell would a website or w/e get a reviewer that is a die hard Gears of War fan to play this game hoping that they get to shoot animals. I mean, surely they would have someone that knows what to expect, and would state in their review that this game might not be for everyone, but explain in detail what the game is about, and how to approach it. I would definitely be interested in picking up this game as long as it has lots of replay value and great trophies.

Wow, Natsume is still around? Didnt they have some old school games like Legend of Kage and a side-scrolling shooter called Honey Bee?

Finally, been waiting for this game for soo loong now @_@ all I need is a release date and I'm preordering.

Edit: also Ben, "There has been a little confusion during this time, but after its E3 appearance, thinks are rapidly clearing up." thinks, things. though it's not important, doubt this will be one of the mega threads, haha.

I was of the impression that all PS3 releases since January of 2009 were REQUIRED to include trophy support. Yes, no, maybe?

Any title submitted to Sony for approval since the start of Jan 2009 is supposed to have trophies as part of the mandatory feature list - or so the story goes.

No Skate 2, and my PSN avatar isn't a big smiley face...

I re-read my reply earlier and realized it was little more than a reworking of the original poster's question. LOL, color me embarrassed.
