Rumor: PS3 Slim To Be Unveiled At Tokyo Game Show

You can't kill off a good rumor, especially when relentless journalists like ourselves keep it afloat. ;)

Anyway, you all may recall the speculation that Sony was prepared to launch a new Slim PlayStation 3 model. The supposed evidence came from a Chinese manufacturer and as they're hardly official, we don't really want to post the leaked pics here. But you can see one at Live PlayStation, who says that according to the UK's PSW Magazine, there is a striking similarity between the PS3 Slim photo and the early PSP Go packaging. The magazine reads:

"The PS3 Slim Packaging looks almost identical to the confirmed PSP Go, so it isn't a fake. Expect the smaller, lighter PS3 to be announced at the Tokyo Games Show in September, just in time for Xmas."

Well, the Tokyo Game Show is slated to kick off on September 24 in Chiba, Japan, and it's bound to be a big show (it is most every year). Of course, when Sony was asked about the possibility of a PS3 Slim, they quickly said they've "never seen it before" and in all honesty, really didn't know what those pictures were. For our part, it might not be a bad idea, but the PS3 still needs a price cut...perhaps Sony is planning to slim it down and announce a price cut at the same time. In other words, the next time you hear of a new model, it'll be nice and thin and retail for $299. Who knows?

I want PS3 sales to surge too. Just to attract more developers to go exclusive again. Games really sucks to be multi-platform. Imagine the same Call of Duty games but PS3 exclusive!! The possibilities are endless

all i can say is that when the ps3 is 300 dollars sales will skyrocket and xbox wont be able to keep up and i also predict that a price drop of the ps3 will cut into wii sales

i also know that when the ps3 drops in price microsoft will follow with there own price cut because they know if the ps3 and 360 were at the same price the 360 would be "obsolete"

Why does it have to be about the competition? Competition is what brought us to where we are today... monopolies do not breed innovation.

This is a site that I have enjoyed thoroughly for its mature, concise and celebratory approach to Playstation news. We can be above fanboyism, and still enjoy rigorous discussion and debate. Comments like yours only serve to bait those who are opposed to your opinion. I guess I kinda fell for it, but not to defend the competition, but the integrity of these discussions.

@ JofaMang. While I agree with some of your points about fanboyism, I disagree about your stance about competition. It is mostly a good thing, when one company tries to out perform the other. The problem of fanboyism arises when those companies bash their competitors. Competition does indeed breed innovation. Say Sony was in the market by itself, what motivation would they have to try and bring new things to the table?

People overrate competition in regards to innovation. It helps, but the real driver is multiplicity.

Example: if there is only one developer making a football game each year (I'm looking at you EA), there is only one set of new features which are added. Some of these will be true innovations and some will suck. If there are two or three developers, there are two or three times as many new features, so there is a greater chance that one or more will be good. And, the next year, all the developers will copy the thing that worked.

It's not so much that they want to beat each other, but that they all want to make a better game. And they would do so, even if they did have a monopoly, because that's what they do, make better games.

I think the pic is fake? It says 120gb/go, doesn't seems realistic to me to have a much slimmer console which the pic shows in comparison to the controller and have a 120gb HDD built in. I think the box art wouldn't be ready yet?

I don't care either. The 399.00 current PS3 is doing amazing as is along side the 399.00 360 Elite. I don't think a PS3 slim cut at 100 bucks is gonna change much nor blow 360's sales out of the water. I'm not speaking out of being a 360 fanboy. Go back to yesterdays articles and read the Activision threat put on Sony to cut their price - or Else.. Read my long post and you'll see every 360 SKU came out above the 80gb PS3 399.00 price point.

What I'm saying is, Microsoft no matter what they charge or how crappy their products are in the reliability area, along with their sub par software lineup against Sony's amazing exclusives, NO MATTER WHAT, 360 always gets a pass from the gaming public and gaming media.

So I don't think a price cut will make a HUGE dent in the gaming world. My opinion. Time will tell.

If you see the pics of the new motherboard, there's no Emotion Engine unless they ULTRA-microsized it. Solely software emulation is often mediocre at best and that's probably why Sony has no plans themselves to do it. It could be POSSIBLE to do if (approximately) you need a 10x more powerful machine to emulate and the PS3 is supposedly ~40x more powerful than the PS2.

I still think 'BC' shoulda been offered as a $30-60 hardware add-in card from the start unless hardware built-in only adds up to ~$10 to the cost of building the system.

TGS 2009. Sony reveals new slim PS3, price to be confirmed.
November 2009, GT5 ships on PS3's 3rd birthday, new slim PS3 available at retail, new price is $300.

What better title to relaunch the system with?

What better time to do so than the third 'birthday' of the PlayStation 3system?

What better time to bring a reduced price and slim model?

As I've been saying since the pictures of the slim PS3 emerged. This will be announced at the TGS, but no price will be given. The old 80GB systems will get a discounted price of $299 to clear the channel, the new system will debut on the third birthday of the PS3 in November, along with GT5 as a relaunch title.

That's what I'd do, and I'd announce that discounted price on the 80GB systems in August or September, and September happens to be the time that TGS happens.

The new slim PS3 will debut at $399, and then once the 80GB is sold out, the new slim PS3 will get the $299 price to itself. Same thing that Sony did when they brought in the new 40GB systems without BC.

Yea, I believe that leaked photo is actually the real PS3 Slim. I've been noticing the "PS3" logos of the games being advertised. They started using "PS3" instead of "PLAYSTATION 3" for infamous, Ratchet and Clank trailers/ads. Plus a lot more.... The same logo from the leaked slim box

No but really, my good friend works at gamestop ( i'm not sure if he's lying or not but hear me out) and right now they are working on 3 models, one that looks like the ps2 slim, one that is just a smaller looking ps3 and all i know about the last one is that its white. I wanted to get a PS3 so I could play over the summer break, but now I got to wait until September. Guess I will keep playing Solitaire until then. I was really disappointed when Sony put the top loading DVD on the PS2 Slim, lets hope they don't go super cheap on the PS3 Slim. (^o^) I have seen some really good games on sale lately and have started stocking up.

Target has R&C:FTOD for $14.99 (some for $7.49 if lucky) and GT5:Prologue for $9.99 this week.

I'm going to be completely honest here, my 60gb PS3 manufactured on Feb 2007 crapped out on me 2 weeks ago when I was watching a DVD (YLOD). Before that I could have cared less about a price cut and a slimmer PS3. But I'm finding it harder and harder every day to come up with the funds to pay Sony for a replacement unit when many people are still having problems with the refurbs Sony is sending back. A 300 dollar slim, software backwards compatible PS3 would be a dream come true. I'd much rather save up and buy new more reliable system and purchase an extended warranty than take a gamble with Sony and pay $150 for a 90 day warranty. The YLOD phenomenon is growing, just check the official Playstation forums. Seems like this problem plagues mostly the original 60gb launch units.

I understand scarecrow, but a lot of people are having problems with the units Sony is sending back. I'd much rather wait and buy a used ps2 to hold me over until I can buy a more reliable model that runs cooler and get an extended warranty plan

Are these 'lots of people' people you actually know, or names on the Internet. There's a lot of non-sense talked about Sony's repair/ warranty service.

From all reports I am aware of, Sony's repair/replacement service is a good one, it's more or less $150 and you'll more than likely get a refurb of the same model you sent in to them. I'm pretty sure that in such cases Sony has to offer at least a 90 day warranty on the replacement unit. Honestly anyone with a failed PS3 (thankfully it is a relatively rare event) really must call Sony about their repair service.

If there is going to be a slim ps3 I doubt they will release it at $300. They would most likely drop the price on the current ps3s and release the slim at $400.

I dont like this rumor because the PS3 doesnt really need a redisign right now, it needs a price cut.

Why not do both at once? At this point the things that will permit Sony to cut the cost of building PS3s and therefore also cut the price they sell for is the die shrink of the Cell and RSX. These smaller chips run cooler and require less power. So the chip package and HSF don't have to be so large any more, the PSU can be smaller, and so forth. Rather than shipping a big, but more empty box, it makes sense for Sony to build smaller units if they can. If for no other reason than they take less materials, use less packaging and you can get more units on a shipping pallet if they are smaller and lighter.

The blu-ray drive in my PS3 died a couple months ago (not sure if thats the LROD you're referring to) and it cost $150 to fix since it was 3 months past the 1 year warranty. I haven't had any problems with it since then though so I would recommend having it fixed instead of buying a new system.

We have an original launch 60GB - still going strong after nearly 3 years of abuse. Earlier this year I had the opportunity to buy a refurb 60GB unit from a reseller that refurbishes the units and upgrades the HDD, it too performs like a champion.

For those people who do have a failure, repair by Sony is easily the best option. Sure beat the heck out of complaining in Internet forums... ;-)

Any new PS3 that uses the 45nm Cell BE will be an excellent buy for consumers. The BluRay drive will be a newer, more mature model - and likely more reliable. The Cell will be smaller and run much, much cooler (as does the 65nm shrink compared to the 90nm version). RSX also runs cooler after it's own shrinks and improvements. Basically the new slim systems will probably be very, very reliable.

All I can say for those who are gonna pick up the PS3 whens the price cut eventually happens, is that you guys got loads of super awesome exclusive games to catch up. MotorStorm, Resistance 1 & 2, Ratchet and Clank series, Little Big Planet, Uncharted, Metal Gear Solid 4, Killzone 2, Infamous, and some other great ones. Not to mention some great multi plats. Haha Good luck catching up.

I'm a bit skeptical about the PS3 Slim being cheaper. I thought the PSP Go! was gonna be $169 and the 3000 get a price cut. But we all know how that ended up.

Not saying that the PSP Go! or Slim PS3 is not worth the price for newcomers, but if the big PS3 does get a price cut I would get one for the living room and use it mainly for movies.

I still think only a $50 price drop is likely...and/or adding 'extras' like 160GB HD standard, 'classic' game(s) included or BD movie(s) offer, PSN credits, 2 controllers or BD remote, etc. to make it more enticing.

C'mon! A $349.99 PS3 w/ 160GB HD + $50 of PSN credit seems like a decent deal...no? Free year of Qore too?

i have to say i hate these hardware modification within the generation, seems endless upgrade, adjustment, mod, etc. Same goes for DS, DS lite, now DS i; likewise, PSP, PSP2000, PSP3000, PSP Go etc.

why cant they just focus on making great games and software, and let the same console last for a little longer, just hang in there a little longer please!

I'm pretty damn sure...that there is going to be a PS3 slim since there has been a slimmed down version of every single PlayStation console in the history of PlayStation.

If it's this year...wow - that sounds great. $300...wow even better - I just hope Sony doesn't lose too much money on it. A company's main goal should be to make profit...rather producing the most output and selling it you know? I mean...it would just hurt the company. Then again...they could be trying to do the Steinway affect...where they gave a bunch of free pianos to big name concert halls making their name so famous.

So...I'm guessing by doing this...they'd put a good name on the PS3. EVEN THOUGH IT REALLY DOESN'T HAVE TO GIVE A "GOOD NAME" - since I personally know that it is already good...and the best!

Also...I hope those pictures are fake...I'm just hoping for a nicer looking model of the slimmed down version. I know those pictures were just of the cover and stuff and u can't really tell until u see the whole thing - but still.

Like the PSP GO! to me...it just doesn't look as great as the first PSP did or any of the other PSPs. It just seems a bit less solid (again it's just my opinion). I hope the PS3 slim looks great!

If Sony drops their price to 299 then I think MS should as well. 399 for no online play is a pretty steep price from MS. When the Elite is 299 and Live is free, then I'll think about it.

As for a slim PS3, why would they do that? Wouldn't they drop the price of the current system before introducing another one?

It's almost certain MS will follow with a price cut. Free live? Doubt it. It still amazes me that the Elite cost the same as the 80gb PS3 and all you get is a bigger hard drive and a cheap HDMI cable while the PS3 gives you a blueray player, Wifi, interwebs browser, digital optical output, free PSN connectivity, etc. Yet no Xboxer seems to complain about the price of the Elite.

dident you see that article stating it was a fake cheap ps3 they did the stunt to try and push up its price, i even found on looking like that on ebay.
im shure we will see a ps3 slim but not this year, the ps3 has only been out for 3 years its a bit early.
