Midway: Next MK Will Be M-Rated

Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe was a solid and entertaining fighter; a surprisingly good blend of old-school brutal combat and classic comic book heroes.

However, the MK aficionados didn't particularly like the fact that all the trademark blood and gore was removed to make room for a more accessible "T"-Teen rating. Well, have no fear, because it seems the franchise will return to its roots with the next installment. As reported by IndustryGamers, series co-creator Ed Boon spoke a bit about the future of MK on his Twitter page. First, he dashed some hopes by saying there probably won't be any DLC for Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe ("I wouldn't hold my breath"), and second, he reveals that the team is indeed working on the next entry in the long-running franchise. It has a tentative title of Mortal Kombat 9 and it will be devoid of comic book superheroes. Very simply (it has to be simple if it fits into the Twitter 140-character limit), Boon said:

"People want an M-rated MK....dammit we will give them an M-rated MK."

Midway has had their fair share of financial struggles, but it's nice to know that MK lives on. We don't have any further details on the new project, but it's enough to know that it will return to the good ol' bloody foundation the franchise was built upon. If we're being honest, isn't this what really attracted everyone in the first place...?

thank god!!! i can go back to playing a real MK. MK vs DC just didn't cut it for me at all. I mean yes i loved the fact that the MK charas had new moves, but other than that...... ummm what more is there to say lol.

take us back to the good old days of MK 1-3, minus all the crazy amounts of bones flying everywhere in a fatality. hehe :D

This is great. And I agree with Ultimadream. The visuals Street Fighter IV had were great. Mortal Kombat vs. DC was a good game, but it just didn't feel right without the gore. It's not that I like gore, but it is a Mortal Kombat trademark. A fatality where you drop an arcade machine was funny but not classic.

After the first few Mortal Kombats I lost interest, as of lately they seem like button mashing frenzies.

like everything else, it's better if you learn the combos than if you just button mash

I want some bouncy boobs in this damn game!

And please slash out the crap characters.
But yes, make it bloody, hot, and INTENSE

The more intense they make Mortal Kombat, the better

i wonder what the new fatalities will be like.....
probably even more blood and gore than in previous games

plus it will be in GLORIOUS HIGH DEFINITION!!!!!!!

hopefully they will build upon the story that they have been going with from MK: deadly alliance and deception, with a few tings from armageddon

but keep kombat like MK vs DC

Let's hope they really did pull their head out their ass and make this game 2D. I haven't cared for the series (except MK vs DC) since it went 3D.

I still think Mortal Kombat was best in their 2D stages with 3, Ultimate 3, and Trilogy.

If they can bring some of that flair back with combos, more innovative (and funny) Fatalities, Brutalities, Babalities, Friendships, and that ever elusive Fergality from 2... I'll be happy.

When you're playing a fighting game you want to rip the soul out of your opponent and all that kiddy stuff in the last game was just terrible and unappealing for a lot of people. I'm guessing they were aiming to sell a lot of copies by having DC characters and lowering the rating to "T", but I think it backfired.

Make the game bloody, fierce and a whole lot of sh** that I can't do, but feel like doing at the end of Street Fighter 4 matches (I really get competitive in that game). IF the game turns out to be like the classics, I'll go to the store and say "GET OVER HERE" and buy it.

Good to hear. I passed on MKvDC since I'm not really into comic books, tho I'm looking forward to arkam assylum.
I agree that most of the newer characters need to be cut. Maybe keep frost, she was funky even if she was a wannabe. What MK needs to do most tho is fix their horrendously clunkly controls and flesh out the moves/combo list, unless they did this in vDC but I highly doubt it. I mean most of the guys in armaggeddon had about 5 combos, some even less.

With as much as they shredded Sonya's top even in this teen game, I wonder if they'll push the envelope for costume damage when the go back to an M rated game.
