Modern Warfare 2: Specially Designed Mode For Co-Op

There was a time in this industry when "co-op" automatically meant two players. But things have changed drastically in the world of multiplayer gaming, and now, there really isn't any limitation (just look at the upcoming MAG).

However, Infinity Ward still believes two players is the sweet spot for cooperative-based gameplay. In a VideoGamer interview with the studio's director of communications Robert Bowling, we learn there will be a definite change in the co-op concepts between last year's Call of Duty: World at War and this year's Modern Warfare 2. In Treyarch's effort, we could participate in four-player campaign co-op, but Infinity Ward's new sequel won't feature a campaign co-op mode at all; instead, there's something entirely new: a two-player, specially designed Special Ops mode. It's "designed to be replayed over and over again," and Bowling said they didn't want to pollute the story "by cramming co-op into it." So, they just made a whole new adventure. Special Ops is "all about fun" with a friend and it'll be a completely new experience that is separate from the single-player campaign. And why not four players...? Bowling responds:

"Two player seemed to be the magic number for co-op. That’s when it stayed really fun and intense without becoming a clusterf**k of things. We just found that two-players was the most fun."

Well, that has the tendency to happen when too many people are trying to work together. Of course, we expect great things from the four player co-op in Uncharted 2: Among Thieves, but we certainly respect Infinity Ward's way of doing things. A special mode designed for co-op definitely sounds like a plan, and we can't wait to see how it turns out.

Well, they are listening to the fans and include what is a very popular game feature!

I have to agree the 2 player co-op is the most logical inclusion; to play missions with a buddy is just great fun and its seems gamers generally would like to see more co-op available in a lot more games... it seems the logical thing to do if the game play mechanic permits it

i think i would add the option of 4 player but have it alter the gameplay via how many players there are.(I think resistance 2 did that) So then the people that might whine about it don't

Fair enough... good point made... I think giving people options is always good... I am sure WorldsEndsWithMe will have an interesting take on this one too...

MY take? I think it's cool, but that "Clusterf*ck" thing was clearly a dig at MAG.

meh, i don't think i'm going to get this game. Modern Warfare was alright but not the holy grail that some gamers think. I think i will stick to MAG

I have to admit, MAG does seem more interesting. I am also still rather miffed at the attitude of Activision toward Sony with their threats... it may be game politics... but it still wasn't nice!

*eye twitch* "we think 2 player co-op was more fun" Now I can see where they are comin from not wanting to "pollute" the story mode, but WTH makes them psychic? They can forsee what every gamer who wants to get this game is gonna think about 4 player co-op before it releases. I love how thay said "we think" they may be the developers, but I don't care what anybody says about a game, let me decide whats fun for me and, leave my options open. I hate all the restrictions MW1 left me with, and now they're just gonna open it up a little bit? Pfft, after activisions little outburst I'm haveing serious doubts about getting this game anyway. mabey I am over reacting a bit and I'll admit so, but damn guys let me decide whats fun for me, make a 4 player option that you can change to 2 player or 3 or 4 whatever.

Activision is just talking out there a$$ they ain't going nowhere. Far as price cuts sony is concentrating on making money, we will see how this console race plays out in the end. It will prolly be 2016 but sony is going to win.

Instead of attacking the posters who have put in the time and effort of being courteous, you could try just submitting your opinion. If anyone cares, they will respond.

I know I know, I just fed a troll, but I couldn't let him/her/shim pollute my bastion of rationale PS chatter.

There are so many places better suited for picking fights, why try in the monastery?

Yeah I agree with that, I have a ps3, but I tend to think that people that hate activision just because of that comment are kind of dumb. I do not think that man had any right however, to say that, because they are after all making all of these plastic guitars and drums sets for guitarhero or rockband,or whatever the hell they make (i can't stand those games.). How can he say "hey sony lower your hardware price!" even though its already below a profit margin (unlike activisions plastic devices which are sooo marked up for profit its sickening.). Now, as far as supporting the company, if they keep supporting good games like COD i'll keep supporting them, but I will not say that the remark Activision made was appropriate or accurate. For all intents and purposes I do indeed think they are overall a quality company they have just gotten a little arrogant because of their success in the last couple years.

I'll consider a COD game when Activision replaces that tool they have for a president.

Also I don't need to rebuy COD every 12 months. GOYT = Uncharted 2

Special Ops Mode! Sounds like a cool idea, is it basically separate level(s)?

I've never played co-op with more than one person anyway so this seems good to me.

For the people talking about skipping MW2; if you're saying that because your not a fan of the franchise, fair enough. But if your saying that because of what Ben referred to as a "bluff" from Activision's Bobby Kotick said, you should reconsider.

Activison is just the distributor, Infinity Ward is making this game. Would you skip a great movie from Martin Scorsese like Goodfellas because you don't like Warner Bros?

I guess on some level if you did, you'd feel like you made a bold statement or something but I just think you'd be missing out on a great game because some blowhard was talking some jive:)

Two player is the sweet spot when you only have one friend. I think the four player on W@W was great. Provided I wasn't playing online with some idiot who would run to the front lines just to get slaughtered.

They definitely understand the concept of "less is more" which is good news. When playing with just one partner, the communication is simple and there's no calling of names to catch peoples attention. As they rightfully put it, it can be a bit of a clusterf**k when too many people are trying to talk over their headsets (hate to point out the fact that xbox live do find this to be less of a problem but I'm not sure why, can anyone clarify?)

I remember hearing that Modern Warfare 2 would have a Terrorist Zombie mode like WaW's Nazi Zombies. Is this true or did I get bad information? And if it is true, Is there a chance in hell of having 4 player split screen on it?

I just looked on the IW forums, and it looks as though Special Ops is in the place of Zombies, but that would've been kinda cool

Uncharted 2's coop has a max of 3 players, not 4. Just a heads up.

MW1 was a pretty good game, but MW2 is pushing it just a bit. Never got MW1 simply because I had better games to play, and I doubt I'll get this one too.

If this game gets GoTY (which I don't really care about anyways), its because its an established series that no one wants to admit has lost quite a bit of its shine since #1. I would have to say Uncharted 2 gets GoTY, simply because it will be the better game. Better graphics, better story, better gameplay (IMO anyway), just about better everything.

That sounds awesome! You know what that reminds me of? Splinter Cell Pandora Tomorrow. The multiplayer portion was, to me, so different then the actual "campaign." I played the MP for hours; it was so much fun.
