Final Fantasy VII Downloaded Over 100,000 Times On PSN

When we first heard that PS1 classics would be available via digital download on the PlayStation Network, everyone was asking, "when will we get Final Fantasy VII?!"

Well, we've got it now, and a great many of you have responded. According to the latest numbers provided by Sony (of which we'll expand upon later), what is arguably the best RPG of all time has been downloaded over 100,000 times already! Obviously, this makes it the fastest-selling PS1 download on the PSN to date, and you can count on that number swelling more over time. Now, with the immense popularity of this re-release, we just have to bring it up: wouldn't a proper remake, produced with next-gen technology, be absolutely gargantuan? Many have argued that we're so far past FFVII in the chronology of gaming that it may not be relevant anymore; that the new generation simply wouldn't be interested in a remake. However, as this re-release essentially proves, there are plenty of people out there who continue their love affair with the game, which translates to the inevitable fact: a remake would be worth it. Of course, we're not about to resurrect that ridiculous rumor again, as there is absolutely no evidence whatsoever that supports a remake. You can feel free to dig up whatever you like, but bear in mind that whatever you find is nothing more than rumor and/or speculation. Or maybe you won't care.

But anyway, the point is, FFVII is still very popular. It hasn't been on the PSN for very long, and it has already been downloaded over 100,000 times. Pretty damn impressive.

I downloaded it a few days after it was released to the PSN.

I still have my original copy, but since it still played the last time I put it away (about 5 years ago) I keep its unscratched perfection in a box in my closet, away from heat and light.

I have used emulators to play it in the past, and in many ways a powerful computer can make it look better than it does on the PS3, I required a copy I could play on the ps3 that wouldn't risk damaging my original release copy, or pay too much for over the interwebs.

I will probably never play it to 100% again, but going through it again for the first time in a few years was video game nostalgia defined.

I got this the moment it was released. Upon starting a new game I was immediatly reminded why this is to date my favorite FF game evah! Sad cause I don't think square will ever top this bad boy.

A FFVII remake would make a fortune. Not a silly HD version of square hands either! I mean a REEEAL remake.

It's too bad the PS1 classics didn't have trophies integrated.

That is well OVER 9000!

Sorry I had to. But anyway, that is an amazing albeit expected feat. Maybe it will shake up someone in a development team and make them realize that this is what the people want and start making RPG's like this again with updated graphics and even richer stories thanks to the invention of larger capacity discs.

At least this gives SE an idea of how much PS3 owners WANT to love them again and deserve their damned attention. A remake would sell more copies than there are broken 360's in the world.

Maybe in the remake we will be able to resurrect Aeris ;)

I just got to the part where she died and lost all the Materia she was carrying pissed me the hell off. Good game really enjoying it the visuals are stunning and the gamplay is fantastic I would be worried that a remake would ruin what I believe to be a perfect game already.

I hope they release a PS2 emulator on PSN for $50 and then you can buy PS2 games for $10-25.

I mean, come on, Sony is just sitting on a gold mine with PS1 and PS2 classics.

Emulating the PS2 isn't an easy task even for Sony. I believe that the 60 gigs actually have some hardware left for the PS2 emulation.

i personally wouldn't want a remake.

The way Enix has been all out commercialism lately is enough to make me know they would destroy FF7. It would be Advant Children all over again. The spin offs alone are enough to make me sick.

anyway, its great the original gets its love still and is given a another chance with a new generation.

Greatest Rpg? possibly but, for me, Dragon Quest 8 came oh so close! (and everybody forgets Alundra these days :( ) I wonder if WKC will be the one...?

It was a ridiculous OTT, uneeded affair. $ was the motivation and what did it do to add to the already perfect plot of FF7? Nothing.

Why were people flying and fighting like they were from Dragon Ball? They do it again in FF13. Its all out commercialism and was just a visual feast with OTT action scenes. Don't get me started on the whole resurrection of Sephiroph! and the glimpse of Aries...ridiculous.

Cash in just like the 21 spin offs. Enix have fallen.

You don't have to agree but, respect my opinion and my passion for FF7.

Like dragonball? You do remember Sephiroth was able to fly in FFVII right? Cloud was able to jump long distances. While Advent Childrens story was not so good it was still an entertaining to watch. Pretty as well. I thought a majority of the FFVII compilations were great. Crisis Core was great. Dirge of Cerberus was so so. Advent and Advent complete was great. Yes Square did it for money but it's not like most of us didn't get enjoyment out of it. Square sells games for money kind of like your favorite Queen of Pop sells records and his "femboy" image for money right?

Valid point in regards to digital downloads, I personally could careless about a hardcopy if it equates to cheaper costs and quicker delivery.

In regards to FF I'm sure there are plenty of people out there that don't enjoy the franchise, I'm sure a majority of those people are not fans of rpgs. I'd be very surprised to find someone that enjoys the rpg format not being a fan of atleast one FF.

I can't help but wonder how badly this game would skew the May and June NPD software numbers...were it actually counted by NPD.

Still, that's $1,000,000 of revenue right there. I wonder what the return on investment was?

I'd love to know how many copies of FFVII sold in he first two months of availability via PSN in Japan, how many in the US and of course in Europe. I bet that's a decent $$$ for comparatively little investment of time or effort.

Perhaps SquEnix might wish to take note of the sales numbers. FFVII has already shown that even for a 12 year old game that many already own, it can still sell 100,000 on PS3 in under a month. Kinda suggests that there's a market in the US for turn based JRPGs...Gee, I wonder whether SquEnix has any current games that might also sell well on PS3? Games that really haven't sold particularly well on say, another platform? Games that really haven't sold well even at home? Why, it's almost as if FFVII was trying to tell us something about what JRPG fans really want, and which platform they are buying into....

i said about a week ago that they should release a PS2 emulator. This just proves it, if there making this kind of cash, why not get PS2 games on there, $$$. By the way how is the original Metal Gear Solid doing, i bought this bad boy for my PSP and it looks great and plays great.

I fully believe that as soon as the PS2 is no longer supported with both hardware and software the PS3 will eventually get some option to support the PS2 library. That is so far off though that I don't bother thinking about it and simply enjoy my PS2 games on my PS2.

A remake using the PS3 power will be really awesome and make the CGI look as cool as the bluRay Advent Children, that will interest many. Otherwise, other than its ground breaking influence 12 years ago, I really cant see how that can match up to FF13 or GOW3's power.

To say this is not meant to bash FF7 in today's era or to indicate I got some gaming amnesia, I certainly understand the game's position in the history of video gaming, cuz I myself played it through close to 10 times! However, I really dont see how that polygon look like figures can attract any new generation of gamers who have never played the games and who know nothing about the game but its big name.

The storyline is by far one of the best in the gaming business. With a higher budget, more realistic graphics, and a reworking of some of the game it could become another instant classic.

most of the FF7 team is busy with FFvs13, I've actually always thought FF7 was overrated, FF6 was imo much better.aww hell who am I kidding FF8 was sooo much better, FF7 isnt even in my top 5 fav FF games.

Damn it! I just got it last week and was planing on some heavy FF7 sessions but, had emergency eye surgery and now can't play any games until Friday.
FF7 is easier to play one eyed but I am sure Resistance 2 wont be so easy with just one :-(

ANYTHING is arguably ANYTHING. Because using that word avoids any means of actual thought to back it up. Personally, I've played many, MANY RPGs from all over the times, and only three FFs rank in my top 20. No, VII isn't one of them, nor particularly good. Final Fantasy VII is the death knell of virtue.

I agree with what you say, but I'll correct you when you say it's considered one of the top by critics: there are no true critics in the videogame industry. If you need me to "prove" it to you, I can, but for now, think about which critics you trust. That's where it starts to fall apart, because true critics are renowned for their profession. Movie, novel, and music critics don't waste time on anything EXCEPT reviewing.

I challenge you: find me ONE review that truly criticizes a point whenever it brings it up. That is criticism, and the only aspect of it. I doubt you would, not just because it wastes time, but because you cannot.

Not exactly sure where you're going with this one but let me explain a few things. A critic is anyone that judges, evaluates, or criticizes something. When I mentioned that FF7 was regarded as one of the top RPGs around the world by critics I was referring to the general professionals out there. Are you implying that gaming critics aren't true critics? I beg to differ and I still believe I've made it both clear and obvious that FF7 is regarded as one of the top RPGs by the majority of the gaming world.

you know lightshow I hear that alot, lots of people tell me they loved FF9, but its the only one I have never beat, (other than 11) I actually bout it last year and all I did was run areound at the beginning and played tetra master because I heard tetra master was cazy good. but I never got any further.

OK I need to say this, like really bad, because I've said it before THE ONLY CRITIC YOU SHOULD TRUST IS YOURSELF!!! Nobody elses opinion about a game or movie matters, but your own. Well of course personal tastes should be the most important to each individual gamer. HOWEVER to say a person shouldn't trust anyone else s opinions is pretty arrogant. I know plenty of people that share the same interests and opinions as I do and thus I have no problem putting trust in their comments which might sway me to try something. I don't have an infinite supply of money so I'm glad there are certain sites out there (this being one of them) that I can look to to help me educate myself on a perticular product.

Ben sorry dude, diddn't mean to diss you, but I think of you as a reporter not as a critic, and no i diddnt criticize critics i stereotyped them, theres a difference. And thats great that you have many friends that share the same taste as you and there are sites that help you to try something, but even still, in the end it's not about what anybody else thought about that particular game, Its about what you thought, did YOU like the game?How did the game appeal to YOU? First off congrats on the new SN. Second you're a fool if you truly believe you're so brilliant to the point you don't need any outside opinions to help you become knowledgeable about something. Evidently you have zero friends and zero faith in human beings if you believe taking another person's advice is "leaning too much on others opinions". Of course in the end what really matters is a persons own opinions on a particular product. How long did it take you to come up with that in depth analysis? You're simply trying to start an argument for the sake of arguing but having little to no logic to back up your claims. Have fun trying ZERO new things outside of your narrow minded scope.

It's far better if you play the games on your PSP, the PSP makes them look 10times better than what you'll be seeing on the big screen. I can handle playing PS1 games on an HD tv but no, the graphics are pretty bad.

Sorry to double post, couldn't edit my previous reply to your post. I forgot to fully answer your question. My old roommate had a standard television and the PS1 games looked a lot better on his tv than my wide screen Sony. So yes, I've noticed a rather significant difference between SD and HD televisions.

Wow Vert, it's funny how I'm the one trying to start an argument and yet your the one throwing around the insults, you know I'm right about one's opinion being the only one that actualy matters. As for Zero friends you really need to come up with something better than that. When I want to know something about a game I look to news about the game, it's features, how the gameplay works, not what someone thinks of it, opinions don't help you become knowledgable, they simply tell you what was thought of that perticular subject, I never claimed to be brilliant, and never tried to argue i simply said the only opinion that matters is your own and your turning it into this big thing, I listen to opinions but i don't let it dictate whether or not I should try something, basing youre final decision on what somone else says is foolish, if I had listened to someone who told me that Shadow Hearts Covenant sucked(which MANY people did) I would have missed out on one of the best RPG's I've ever played. continued...

Im the same guy, LowKi was my original acct, but My Forum name is LowKEY so I decided to switch my name finally last night. oh and vert this is my ONLY other acct I only swtched it because of my forum name and i only did it last night. one last thing, I'm not continuing this any longer mens YOU STOP TALKING, and for the record I never insulted you so I come out of this clean as a whistle hahahaha. I never blasted anyone who offered thier opinion, except critics, and i never went on a rant, the critic thing started as a joke, but know after listening to you dribble on critcizing me I'm starting to think that way. I am with you on that Lowkey, I sometimes find games with "5 out 10 on IGN are actually quite fun, and I have experienced that quite a bit times, so from that, I learned to trust my gut feelings and intuitions when picking up games for myself.

With that said, that does not equal to not listen to any of the reliable resourse or a good review -- an insightful and well written review by a critics with good taste does have a lot of say of the game most of the time.

I would have to say -- with my full love of the game and by the mere fact that I played it thru 9 times -- FF7 is a great game. However, on the other hand, I would say in terms of the music and classic feeling, Chrono Trigger is better; in terms of the graphics and color, Chrono Cross or FF9 is better; in terms of the gameplay, FF8 is better; and in terms of the story, FF4 is better etc and because these reasons, I dont see FF7 is more shining than any of the above games I mentioned...

A remake using the PS3 power will be really awesome and make the CGI look as cool as the bluRay Advent Children, that will interest many. Otherwise, I really dont see how that polygon look like figures can attract any new generation of gamers who have never played the game and who know nothing about the game but its big name.

FF7's greatness mostly stems from the fact that it was the first 3D full-fledged JRPG at the time and it introduced unprecedented CGI and concept to the RPG world. However, in every category, there are better ones than the game before the PS2 era. such is my opinion

Boss, now Im not saying anything about good reviews or bad reviews, reading reviews in general is great and yes it can help you to decide, but alot of people base thier final decisions on what was said about a game, which i believe is wrong, even if a game is good, many people won't admit it and jump on the bad opinion band wagon, that I guess is what I should have said from the beginning. Thats why I say, nobodys opinion really matters but your own, i hope you see what im saying now, no arguement is intended.

IX was good but not as good as VIII. VIII wasnt as good as VII. Final Fantasy kinda started to go down hill after VII and kind of redeemed itself with X. but XI and XII stumbled again. Hope XIII is better then XII. of Course non of them are really as good as III, IV and VI. i still havent played I and II. am i missing any?
