Obsidian's Aliens RPG Is No More

Fans of the movies would've loved to try a role-playing title based on the long-running franchise, but it seems they will no longer have the opportunity.

Obsidian's Aliens RPG was supposed to be one of three Sega projects that would utilize the "Aliens" license; the other two are first-person shooters (Aliens vs. Predator and Aliens: Colonial Marines). However, according to an administrator over at the official Aliens RPG forums, the project is officially dead. The message reads:

"Rumors have circled around a bit regarding the fate of the Aliens role playing game that Obsidian and SEGA had been working on. Unfortunately, it is true that we are no longer working on the game, and we wanted to finally announce that officially to everyone who has been following its development."

Too bad. The game held a tentative release date of TBA 2009 and was going to arrive for the PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 and PC. We can always look forward to Rebellion's Alien vs. Predator, of course, but we've never really had an Aliens RPG. That coulda been way cool. The good news is that this license likely won't disappear from the video game realm any time soon; the possibilities are almost endless, despite the fact that many past titles that have used the license have been mediocre.

I hope that happens. This project is just too good to pass on.

too bad, like Ben said,it would of been a nice concept, unfortunately,an rpg game takes too much time and money to make, whereas in comparison a fps can be done and out the door in less than 2 years,it also sells better(higher volume)....

I would much rather have a role playing game than a fps. They dropped the wrong one of the three in my opinion.

Thing is, I don't understand how it could have ever worked unless it was a first person RPG like Fallout 3, it just wouldn't have meshed otherwise.

Alien is by far my favorite movie. This is wonderful news, just like the sequels there was no need for this game, it would only taint what was meant to be a unique vision.

In a perfect world HR Giger would have already contributed his time to a new IP specifically for videogames. A Giger Survival horror game, in a perfect world.

I loved the Ridley Scott films myself..

It's really sad that Giger is not utilized more. He keeps getting older and remains absent for the most part. His work is not only beautiful to look at but incredibly beyond most people's scope.

His work on the matrix was an eye opener too, but my favorite will always be his Necronomicon artbooks.

Seriously Vert and I love to draw so he is becoming an inspiration in an odd way. Normally by his work alone but now time is short and I gotta keep at it before I reach his age with not not even a fraction of HIS accommplishments..

Several of his pieces have matrix in the name, I assume that's what World is referring to. He never did anything for Matrix the movie.

Umm, sorry for the misfire there, Hollywood borrowed liberally and heavily from him for The Matrix films. He didn't do it FOR them.

The Wachowski bros even did shot for shot remakes of Ghost in the Shell scenes for the first movie.

Oh I thought the Matrix films for a second. The guy was an architect too man. Accomplished artist on all fronts. I hate people who pigeonhold him to "erotic art". Sit in one of the man's chairs..

I didn't know 3 Alien games were coming out? I'm just glad they didn't drop Aliens: Colonial Marines that's the one I want to play(I don't care for RPG games that much, I love my FPS!).
