PSXE Poll Update: RPG Fans Have A Tremendous Showing

Wow, this is one poll result that has really surprised us: we have an inordinate number of RPG fans around here!

Role-playing is hardly the most popular genre in the video game industry (based on sales numbers and not review scores), as action/adventure, sports, and FPSs typically rule the charts. But being an RPG-lover at heart, it's fantastic to know so many fans are avid readers of PSXE; it just brings us all a little closer. 'wipes tear from eye' But seriously, even though the majority of you do say action/adventure is your favorite genre, it only won by a very small margin over the second-place RPG category, which even beat out FPS. ...which makes me believe we may be the only major gaming site in existence where such a poll will say more readers enjoy RPGs over FPSs; that almost seems like an impossibility in this day and age. But we'd also like to add that we have many intelligent and knowledgeable members, and I hate to say this, but...well, I'm sorry, but it just seems that the average RPG fan is smarter than the average sports or action fan. Obviously, this isn't an all-encompassing figure and it certainly isn't based on anything but my own observations and experiences, but I stick to it. So it kinda makes sense.

Anyway, considering how many RPG fans we have out there, we just thought we'd stay in that realm and ask about your favorite RPG. It's similar to the Best of the Best Polls we ran, but those were console-specific; this is overall: what's your pick? Is it Final Fantasy VII? Something more old-school like Chrono Trigger? Or a newer game like The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion? We tried to pick the 10 best-rated RPGs of all time for this poll, so apologies if your selection isn't included. Oh, and before everyone asks, NO, we don't consider Legend of Zelda to be an RPG.

I had to pick the Action/Adventure category because of things like Uncharted, but I still get a fuzzy feeling when I remember FFX and the Kingdom Hearts series.

Indeed, I though the same thing. It's nice to have some evidence, however unscientific, that PlayStation owners are perhaps more likely to enjoy RPGs...than owners of other platforms or players of other genre...

I'm happy to hear this as well. RPGs were very popular growing up with the ps1 and a little lesser so on the ps2 but still was still going strong. Nowadays, I do only see FPS or action/adventure games for tv commercials :P I have to admit though, I haven't enjoyed an RPG in quite some time. Persona 4 was alright, but I never did feel like finishing it after 50+ hours. I think the last truly enjoyable RPG I played (I'm not including FFXI becuase that was just way too much fun) was FFX.

It's only natural that more intelligent people take a liking to good RPGs. Good RPGs tend to be story driven and therefore some thought is required inorder to appreciate it. The role playing genre is really the only genre to have allowed games to act as a deep story telling medium. I really don't like FPS games, and apart from the casual multiplayer shoot out, I don't really play them that often.

Indeed, RPGs involve following a story and characters. You have to plan ahead, think strategically, think about what you're going to do next, interpret clues and solve puzzles, all of which of course take some brain power. Of course smart folks like RPGs, it's inherent to the genre...It's not like a twitch FPS where supernatural timing, hand eye coordination and superior reaction times are the skills required...

Yeah I agree that it is questionable to say that people who play rpgs are generally smarter. But then again I definitely find rpgs more intellectually stimulating than other games. Story aside, i love its strategic aspects.

Picked action/adventure for sure.I just find that is the genre with more thought put into the plot.It's like you getting ready to play a mini movie;the games are even better when they have no online modes.This will be the first poll that I won't vote in since I have not played (or seen in action)any of those games which shows my inexperience with rpg's.

rpgs are too open ended for me, i voted fps, they are straight foreward. i played fallout 3 and for some reason it made me a nervous wreck. i hate rpgs. the closest thing i get to them is gta, which is like an rpg/action hybrid.

Although I don't consider myself a smart person, I prefer an RPG game over any action/adventure game anytime. I would say FFVIII was my favorite. The KH series are pretty good as well and last but not least, the most addictive or best experience has been FFXI.

If there were no RPGs I probably would have given up gaming some time ago. Don't get me wrong there's lots of great stuff out there, but as far as I'm concerned its all enjoyable fluff until another good RPG comes out.

Yeah FFVII is my fave for my own reasons but people are probably tired of hearing about it so I'd like to also name my favorite under-appreciated RPG: Skies of Arcadia. It was right on the generational lines that were drawn in the sand between your FFVII-IXs and your FFXs (as a barometer I like to use FFs) even though it was on 128bit systems. Was a sweet ride.

I wouldn't have properly started gaming at all if it wasn't for RPGs like FFVII and VIII.

They also taught me how to read English (better than every kid in our elementary/primary school), since I'm from Thailand.

the reason i got a ps2 was because of FFX

and then of course i also got into ratchet and clank among other things

now i'm gettin all nostalgic!!! damn!! i'm gonna have to play FFX :)

did anyone ever manage to complete the entire sphere grid with every character??

i did :)

i also added more spheres and used those clear spheres to take away any stat that wasn't +4(strength, agility, etc.) , +300 (HP), or +40 (MP), and then replaced the cleared ones with the ones i just listed

i managed to do it after ALOT of time in the omega ruins and the monster arena. gotta have that triple ap and gillionaire!!!

I did that way back in the day. Unlocking the Clear Spheres and replacing everything lol I mean ..as I said above there hasn't been much to play since FFX :P Rpg wise ..and imo of course. FFXI took most of my time the past few years for my rpg fix, but it's been FFX here and there for a looong time and so what else is there to do but max everything out? lol

I'm genuinely surprised but very happy with those results. If only devs were reading this site. 100k units sold of FFVII, RPGs voted number 2 ... make more RPGs !

I don't know about the whole being smarted thing... I guess it's like the difference between reading a book or watching the movie.

No way, I used to live and breathe Final Fantasy. When FFXII came out it was terrible. It looked amazing, had great sound/music, the story even started out okay. But ...Unlike every other final fantasy, I can't remember a single significant thing that happened in FFXII after about 30+ hours with the game, and getting about that far TWICE now. It was just too boring imo, I had no control over what I wanted, I couldn't stand that gambit system because it didn't even become fun until you have them all unlocked :P and even then you constantly had to change them up just to fight a single boss because you'd end up hurting yourself, or healing the boss. RPGs (besides mini games or puzzles) rely on a stellar battle system, that's it ...it's like a traditional fps without guns :P and in FFXII the battle system just took care of everything. The license board was also extremely boring :P All you do is find out where those special finishing move things are and go get em as fast as possible :P ugh ...It's the only FF I've never beaten and for me, that's saying a lot.

I know what you mean- there was no flare to the storyline. The characters were so passive and objective about almost everything- there was hardly any emotion- I didn't laugh or cry, It didn't make me happy or sad, I did not become a part of the characters' story. Another major complaint I have is about the main character Vaan. Never have I encountered such a lame and monotonous charcter. There was nothing special or admiarable about him. What were his aspirations ?- "I wanna become a sky pirate"- come on, sureley there is something more going for you. The archaic english translation was also very annoying IMO. Thankfully FF13 is looking awesome.

Got to agree with my homies, it was bland and I really wanted to care about the characters but had a very hard time. They almost had some emotion in Vaan about Recks but it didn't quite make it there. Where was the sexual frustration between Vaan and Penelo? What on earth was I running miles and miles and miles for? Balthier was the only cool one.

Don't even get me started on the battle system, whoever dreamed that up should be shot. I did beat it though, I wasn't gonna let all those hours go to waste.

Final Fantasy XII was possibly the biggest disapointment in gaming ever for me, I tried so hard to like it. but i just couldnt.

After 80 hours of waundering though fields and temples aimlessy i got to the 80 hour point to the final part on the ship, i haveto admit it got slighlty interesting here and had good atomsphere but its not worth 80 hours of dribble.

Balthier was the only character who was interesting, good personality with a backstory. The rest were so bland.

Though i did like the judges, the battles with them were probaly the highlight of the game for me.

but the story, it really was non-existant, it started of ok, but by the time you left the first town, it did'nt really appear until yoiu were kidnapped onto the ship, which then just ripped of Star Wars IV.

The gameplay was okay, but all you really needed was the bubble spell, Curaga and attack. Also once i completed the game, i felt there was nothing else to do but monster hunts.

At least with FFX-2 i was expecting it to be bad & Dont give me that bull.S. about me not being with my feminine side,its not the fact that they were female, but so childish and imature, which i demonstrate with this piece of dialouge:

Yuna: Oh poopie.
Rikku: Yunie, don't talk like that.
Yuna: I'm just copying you!

Isnt that just childish, but look also at how it comppletely shatters the strenght of what FFX-1 built on yuna, shes just become completely dependant on others........

Anyway yes, i cant vote for this becuase i just cant decide out of FFVII-X They're all perfect in my eye.

Not every Final Fantasy needs to follow the same:

-17 year old kid who wants to save the world
-Gets to kiss a princess
-Flies from town to town a matter of seconds

FFXII was the TRUE Final Fantasy experience I've been waiting for since FFIX.

It really took what FFIX started(very lush and visually engaging environments) and a really radical and interesting take on medieval times.

I encourage those of you who didn't understand the game to give psxextreme.com's review of FFXII a read. It'll enlighten you.

There was a lot to it and it was the FF which matured the series('bout time too). And made it more 'bout ideals and the environment around you, including towns, and gov'ts a much more real and interactive beast, if you know what I mean.

Alas!

You all want a world which holds no signifcance beyond what the world does for characters.

In FFXII both the characters at hand as well as the world depend on each other. A beautiful dance between the two is key to really understanding the game.

FFXII was a sweet game.
Not the best Final Fantasy but a still cool ass game.

And BTW I thought the music for it wasn't epic like the others and it didn't have that certain FF Jap RPG flavour.
So nobody should be able to say it had good music going for it ^_^

Unless you like that kind of fantasy medieval archaic military music.

I've actually always felt that RPG gamers were a pretty intelligent bunch of people, so i feel a bit better that there are many others that feel the same.

The next poll is a bit tough... between FFVII and Chrono Trigger for me, but i like all of the Final Fantasy games on the list, as well as Xenogears and Vagrant Story.

but since I've voted already, it doesnt seem like Chrono Trigger is getting enough love... =/

no offence, imo, the effort and intelligence needed to play a FPS is not even close to those needed for RPGs. other than the fact that it is the trend these days, FPSs should rank in the close positions to the very last.

regarding the greatest RPG of all time, my pick will unavoidably be the all time classic Chrono Trigger, followed by FF8 and FF10 in the second and third place. FF7 is the 4th in this list of 10.

Hey, I think that list is exactly like mine. FFVIII was my favorite on the ps1. Chrono Trigger on the SNES (although ..it's a tie between FFIV) and FFX and XI on the PS2 (I'm only including XI because it's taken more of my time than any other game well ...ever, so it should be on my list)

Agree, FF7 is a great game, but it is indeed overhyped, I will say it probably has the "biggest" name and has the most "brand recognition" -- with that said, it is not the greatest RPG of all time, at least several others as I mentioned above is better than it, imo.

One word: replayability. Thats all there is to it, and for me, RPGs always give me more for my dollar than most anything. Fighting and racing come in a close second and third for me, respectfully.

I'd settle for a guest appearance of Shion and Kos-Mos in a new Soul Calibur.

Actually, no I wouldn't settle, I want some Xenosaga, and I'll even take Xenogears, on PS3.

I'm replaying Xenosaga Ep 1 right now (guilty pleasure), and the graphics are very, very good. Upscaled on a BC PS3 they are as good or better than the graphics I've seen on a fair number of supposedly next gen titles and Xenosaga dates back to 2001. I keep thinking to myself - surely the PS3 is capable of at least this, and so much more, so where is it?

I'm not sure if I got to vote in that poll but I agree 100%...I would have voted RPGs. I saw in recent articles that you've been giving some praise to the Suikoden series. I played 4 quite a bit (haven't beaten it yet), but I also bought the first one off of the PS Network some time ago and just never had time to play it. However since you said that it was probably your 2nd favorite RPG series I figured I should start making time. I started really playing Suikoden 1 today and man...I love it!!!!!

Also I had to vote for FF8 mainly because it was the first Final Fantasy I ever played. I'll never forget that amazing experience. It's the reason I got into Playstation.

I picked Chrono, it was the firs RPG I ever finished until this year and I simply love it.
I am trying to beat all FF games that were released for the PS consoles. I finished 1, and am playing 2 for the PSP. Just started on FF7 on my PSP/PS3 amazing how you can transfer the save files between the two, makes life so much easier.
Here is hopping all FF games come to the PSN!!!

glad to know, I have played Chrono for more than 10 times, in the last 14 years or so, and been still playing it on DS now from time to time. it has the greatest sound tracks. Cross is another my fav. and I just wish they make the Chrono Break on PS3, and when it is released, that will be my biggest day for gaming and i will be in total ecstasy. (ofcourse this is day-dreaming lol)

I chose action-advent though i love rpg.Action-advent tend to be straightforward whiles rpgs may sometimes give me headaches, like..... go to see this guy, he'll give you a shoe, now take the shoe to this woman, she'll give you the socks, afterward go to this boy's house in the north,he'll take it, now go back and face the monster, bla-bla-bla.... don't get me wrong i love rpgs and buy them for their longevity but their sometimes a pain to play let alone beat.

I'll go with Final Fantasy X since i haven't played FFVII, i woulda probably chosen that if i'd played it.

What the POOP!? How is Vagrant Story on that list, but not Final Fantasy Tactics?

Also, FFXII is actually quite good! I don't get why everyone hated it so much. The only things XII did wrong was make the Player Character the weakest one in the game, and they made the story too subtle for most gamers. I'm playing through the game a 2nd time with the subtitles ON and I'm understanding the weight of it much more and really appreciating it's depth and complexity.

But seriously, think about FFXII's characters:

Ashe - a total b-word at times, but COMPLETELY breaks away from the "helpless princess" motif. A very refreshing female lead, full of strength. :)

Balthier - the coolest character to come out of Final Fantasy since Auron. No one in VIII or IX came close to this guy's awesomeness.

Basch - the man who SHOULD have been the Player Character, by all accounts. Great backstory with plenty of twists. A character you can really root for.

Fran - the sexiest character to come out of Final Fantasy since Tifa. Don't get me wrong, I love Quistis and Lulu, but everything about Fran is appealing. Exotic looks and skin tone, gorgeous white hair, and a voice I could listen to all day every day for all eternity.

Penelo - an absolutely lovable, adorable sidekick with a cute and caring personality. The perfect "Everyman" to go with the ensemble. If she were a real person, I would probably be madly in love with her.

Vaan - a dweeb. The sole reason so many people gave up on the game.

FF12 is in my top 3 FF games in terms of gameplay. I find myself replaying that game more than most games.

This really summarizes everything.

I actually find Vaan fun/funny in a way.

Again, I agree with everything you just said. There's a lot in the dialogue that you really need to pay attention to.

Guys, please just remember that this RPG list isn't MY top 10; it's the top 10 rated that I could find according to GameRankings and Metacritic. That's the best I could do.

Trust me, if I had my own list, FFT and FFXII would be on it. ;)

And please, no flaming.

personally my favorite is kingdom hearts i love it but chose final fantasy being only 14 i wasnt older enough to enjoy most old games but i do love rpg and i am thinkin about playing all of these listed and playing all the final fantasy (already played 1,2,3, tactics,10,&12)

I got Oblivion, played it for a good while, but then i beat this corpse under a house and was rewarded to ownership of the house. I felt very fufiled, I felt there was no need to go on.... I'm not quite sure how to explain that...

I got to a certain point in Oblivion and just stopped also, don't know why I haven't picked it back up. Probably because it's not what I'm used to playing in rpg's.

I voted for RPG's. I'm playing Suikoden I and Jeanne D'Arc. I like them both, but Suikoden is way better.

I love FFVII characters, but I have to go with FFX. It was the last great turn-based RPG that had a great story and ending along with excellent gameplay.

it just didn't have a timer,but it showed the lineup of moves to come whih offered a bit more strategy than ATB

When it comes to favorite game genre...Its a no-brainer for me. As enjoyable as a good shooter is, or as engaging a RPG is...They can't stack up to the action-adventure genre.

The best story in the world can't make up for gameplay I don't enjoy. I played FFX and turn based combat just feels too slow for me. It's the same reason I prefer Othello over Chess. Both require strategy but one is more "real time" than the other.

Anyway, I voted Action/Adventure because Insomniac's Spyro is what really got me into gaming. And the reason I keep gaming for that matter.

Seiken Densetsu 3 is my all time favorite. Chrono Trigger a close second.

I actually very much dislike playing FPS games, I've never met one I wanted to buy.

I voted for rpg of course. Favorite series is the xenosaga series. Game... I picked FFVIII for it started my love for rpgs.
