Stop Yelling At Sony To Cut The Price Of The PS3
See that dude in the picture? Despite the fact that I have a lot more hair and I'm probably younger, that's me every time I read another ridiculous, "if Sony doesn't drop the price of the PS3, it's over" article. Really. I'm bored.
The mainstream media is even getting into the game (forgive the bad pun), as everyone is screaming at Sony to drop the price or "sacrifice the console war" here and now. Oh yes, that makes a gigantic amount of sense. Don't ever give the media - it pains me that I'm part of it right now - too much credit, whatever you do. Don't expect them to view the bigger picture, as Sony has been doing ever since they entered the video game console market almost 15 years ago. Right, with around 28 million Xbox 360s and around 24 million PS3s out there (those numbers are only estimates based on recent findings), the PS3 is just getting "blown out of the water," especially after launching over a year later and always having the more expensive system. The PlayStation Network, which is still free, continues to make giant strides and in my humble opinion, is currently outstripping Xbox Live. Read that article in full, by the way, before making any rash assumptions.
Sony says there are 25 million active PSN accounts, and just about everyone agrees that Sony's exclusive lineup for the PS3 easily trumps that of the 360. Feel free to look up the titles on tap for the upcoming 12 months; I'm tired of doing it, if you want to know the honest-to-goodness truth. It's so painfully obvious, I'm not going to bother anymore; if you can't figure it out for yourself, you have your own biases to deal with. But the point is this: I believe most will agree that the PS3 really didn't come into its own until 2008, and let's not forget what the sales numbers and software lineup was like in 2007. Therefore, in about two years time, with the most expensive console on the market, even in a freakin' recession, the PS3 has somehow managed to - shock of shocks - not die. In fact, it has only managed to close the gap, which it will likely continue to do. Of course, it will remain behind the 360 for longer if Sony doesn't drop the price, but what are we really talking about here? A difference of 4-5 million units? That's the catalyst for this sudden outpouring of anxiety-ridden pleas?
You know, it's almost as if the Sony haters found something negative to latch onto and are once again trying to make something out of nothing. They had plenty of ammunition for the first year of the PS3's existence - let's face up to facts - but as each drawback began to disappear and people started to have difficulty locating bullets, the naysayers ran and hid. They never go far, though. No, they hide behind a tree, peeking around the corner and waiting for another piece of rubbish to float down the river. Then they'll jump on it and gleefully proclaim it came from Sony, and "something must be done." Right. Fine. You keep doing that. Sony will drop the price of the PS3 at some point, so just stop worrying, and in the meantime, let's actually examine the current situation for what it is. Hell, at this point, I think people might actually pay the old $600 just for a shot at playing God of War III.
...look closely at that last sentence. It's only one example of many I could make, and so could you.

If you think about it, a lot of gamers went out and got the latest $200 model and just moved their hard drives over because of the RROD issue.
Those are the re-sales/re-purchasing that I am referring to.
Also, what if when people went to replace (years ago mind you) their broken RROD Xbox and the stored processed the replacement as a sale (Return the broken and then Sell the replacement). Another way that numbers could be wrong of M$.
Just consider these two valid points as options.
If it was not for the RROD fiasco, I would not be arguing the numbers claimed by M$.

if it cuts to what they want it at, they're going to want it lower in 1/2-1 year, because the 360 will lower in response... then what?? ps3 lower Or else Activision threatens to jump ship again?? sony's losing money as is... and also the ps3 has roughly 7 years left, and a long time for price drops... if one comes too soon, there won't be another for a while... and what I have mentioned above becomes relevant... ppl will whine, and if sony delivers, losses will rise even more, and if they dont, childish developers will abandon the console, and Sony will recieve more Flak...
IS THERE NO END?????!!!!
(BTW, is Activision Nuts??? losing 24 million potential buyers of their products for the sake of a price cut??? wtf!! if every ps3 owner buys guitar hero:WT, GH:SH, Cod4, CodWaw, and MW2, at roughly $70 a pop, they lose a grand sum of roughly $8,400,000,000 DOLLARS!!!! that's Eight billion Four Hundred Million DOLLARS! you gotta be nuts 2 refuse that!!! Microsoft can't pay them anywhere near that ammount to become a 2nd party dev.)

Every generation of PS's has inched away from the starting line as slow moving tortoise.
But......with each generation of PS's, that mighty tortoise has done a fine job at...
"parting of all their hare(s) off to the side" every time.

I mean seriously look at these release dates
1995: color cased gameboys, 1996: Gameboy pocket, 1997: Gameboy Lite, 1998: Gameboy Color, and after that they started making new models every 2 to 3 years.
So, they have done it before and could easily do it again with wii products.

Never had to send it back for repairs *cough*unlike a certain console out there*cough*
Have never had to pay monthly/yearly bills for online.
And have enjoyed the crap out of it!
I really don't care 'bout the new generation of gamers. They love missing out on the good stuff :D
Not only have they missed MGS4, but they're missing and going to keep missing on the best exclusives of this gen.
I know it pains xbots but instead of whining, why not sell your 360 which is gonna die anyway and get a ps3. If you're that strapped for cash, and all you can do is whine.

Damn, you got lucky with that drop.
I have my PS3 up high on a shelf, and since the 60 Giggers run hotter & YLOD more often than any of the other models, I've got it sitting up on top of 3" high blocks at each corner, just so it can surround itself with all the extra air it ever wants to suck in.
BTW, I sometimes get a little zealous while playing too, so I alwys worried that I might yank on the controller too hard while it was reharging, & cause it drop about 6 feet down, so I wound up buying a "Nyko Dualcharger AC".
It's a charger with dual USB slots(with two 4Ft cords) which plugs right into my home's electrical outlet instead of the PS3's USB port. And when not in use, the electrical plug folds out of the way, right into the unit itself.

I predict by the end of next year, the Ps3 will (at the very least) catch up with the 360 in terms of no. of consoles sales even WITHOUT the price drop. Yes GOW 3 and Uncharted 2 looks that good. But in all honesty, It will most likely drop by the end of this year or at the very latest before GOW3 and when that happens, WELL its just game over for MS
I don't care about numbers and sales but let's face it, that drives the industry. Sony is big company with plenty of smart cookies and they will drop the price when it's right. I wish Sony the best so it continues to deliver quality and innovative games in the future...

299 for a box that will RROD in a year...
399 for a box that will need way less service than the one above..
299 for a DVD player (plus games)
399 for a Bluray Player, DVD player, Game player, PS1...
299 Plus 50/yr for online
399 for free online
the list goes on, and still the slogan remains relevant...

Plus when you look at the PS3 features you get for the price people should be yelling for a 360 price drop as well. If PS3 price drops a 80gb and Pro will be about the same price (if sony dropped it $100). Wouldn't the 360 be overpriced since you would be paying the same price for a system that doesn't have BluRay, Wifi, and 20gb less room? Just wondering.
Also Why would Sony dropped the price of the PS3 in summer when consoles don't move like hotcakes around this time and the hot games don't hit for a a couple of months?

Xbox 360 Pro 60GB + WiFi adapter = US$380 (+ ~US$50/yr for Xbox Live)
PS3 80GB (w/ Blu-ray & WiFi built-in (& gigabit Ethernet vs 100 megabit on 360) + FREE PSN = US$400
Granted, WiFi isn't NEEDED by many, but still a LOT of 360 owners who want it are having to fork out another US$80. System-wise, I don't see why anyone has their panties in a wad over price. Even w/o the WiFi adapter on the 360, after 2 years of paying for XBL, you've spent the same. And if you say, "But the base model 360 is only $200!", how many who bought just that model DIDN'T end up forking out another US$80-100+ for a HD for it later on?
The lame-o Activision CEO was talking about attach rates, though, which IS a valid discussion to still have.

Trying to gang up on the PS3, people really do show their colors don't they (mainstream = 360 fanboys). Why get a price cut? Last I remember both the PS3 and the 360 are in the 20+ million mark.
To start off, I live in country where we earn about USD $1,000 monthly on average, but I haven't heard of anyone complaining about the price of the PS3 right here (except non-working students).
PS3 will get it's price cut JUST like how the PS1 and PS2 get it's price cut..... in a few more years.
To those who complain about getting a PS3, save up the extra 2 months (I know I did), it's worth it, now I have more than enough games that I can't finish them all (average 2 per month).
Great article Ben, SAY NO TO PRICE CUTS!

I could now pick it up with Infamous for just £280. How cheap do the public need it to be?!
Does it matter if it requires several months savings to purchase for some people? It's worth it.

Traded old PS2 games that I'd never play again. (Held onto the classics like MGS 2, MGS3 Subsistance, Shadow of the Colossus, ICO, Silent Hill 2, Resident Evil 4, etc. etc.) Got 200 bucks for trade-ins.
I saved up for 3 months towards a PS3. Got the 40 gig GTA IV bundle with a Blu-Ray Remote, Time Crisis 4, Lego Star Wars and Virtua Fighter 5 and paid an additional 420 bucks for it all
(Keep in mind, this is Australia, the GTA IV PS3 bundle was 749 bucks, time crisis was 120 bucks and games ran about 90 bucks a pop)
I updated the hard drive about 4 months ago to a 320 gig HDD and have never had a problem since. My PS3 gave me everything I needed. And considering the hefty price tag, it was totally worth every penny for the incredibly high powered and reliable console.
(notice the inclusion of the word "reliable")

60gb. 360 ($300) + Wi-fi adapter ($100) + Blu-ray player ($200) = $600 of stuff that you could have gotten all in one box (not to mention with 20gb. more HDD memory!) if you had just got an 80gb. PS3 to begin with ($400). Not only would you save $200 by getting a PS3, but you would save an additional $40 to $84 per year thanks to free online play (Xbox Live costs $7 monthly, OR $40 to $50 yearly).

1) The PS3 is definitely the better system however we all have to admit that its game library has been less than stellar. This is the first time the PS3 is showing promise with its upcoming titles. The fanatics will go on and say this is the PS3's year (this has been repeteadly said and year after year the PS3 gets its butt kicked). At this point of time, the Xbox (with inferior specs) is beating the PS3 and unless Sony Japan does something to incentive developers this holiday season may once again go to Microsoft.
2) The price tag for the PS3 is high but for those who understand, love, enjoy video games know that this will not be an obstacle. The PS3 is a gaming machine and the fact that it plays Blue-Ray movies should not be an excuse to buy it. We buy game consoles for the games not for the DVD capabilities (just look at the Nintendo Wii). Sony needs to get its MOJO back and focus on games.
3) The Activision announcement took me by surprise (and ticks me off also!!) however from a business perspective if you are investing millions of dollars in software and we (us PS3 gamers) are not purchasing them, why would they continue throwing money away? We can stop this by buying more games however Sony must do something to increase the PS3 console community. We need Sony to motivate people to buy PS3. There is just so much word of mouth I can do before my friends tell me it is too expensive.
Sony needs to get off its butt and stop living in the past (Walkman, TV's, PS1 and PS2). Focus on what it has done best in the past -GAMES-. Have a better quality team and do not create piece of crap games. Focus on the multiplayer and give us gamers what we want.
I will continue supporting the PS3 and cannot wait for Uncharted 2, God of War 3, etc. However, if Sony is to be the King of the Hill again it must offer more games that we as gamers are looking forward to.
